30 – Zaphrael

Backstory: As a little boy born to a pair of temple workers, Zaphrael spent most of his time alone by the statue of Dura, reading and building a connection with the Light. Even as the land was stricken by famine, he wouldn't abandon his spot and never lost hope in the goddess. The lord of the land, however, made a deal with the Hypogeans and spread a rumor that the temple was hiding food from the people. Enraged, the people stormed the temple, killing everyone they came across including Zaphrael's parents. Zaphrael himself was saved by a woman who remembered how his parents helped her in the past, and she sent him off secretly to another temple. Zaphrael grew up into a soldier who threw himself in countless battles to save the innocents. Among them was a young girl named Lucretia who immediately fell for him. Not long after she joined the army as a nurse and before long found herself with Zaphrael's squadron. When he got badly injured during one fight, and she happened to be his tending nurse, she broke down im tears and in front of everyone asked him to marry her when he gets better. Reluctantly, he agreed, though he was never interested in the first place. Shortly after his marriage, the god of lightning had perished in the battle and Zaphrael was offeres his place. Ever so loyal to his duty, he took up the offer, leaving Lucretia behind. The next time he saw her was when he came to exterminate a village of heretics trying to bring a terrifying demon to the material world. The finak sacrifice and intended host was his and Lucretia's son. Zaphrael hesitated, wavering in his duty for the first time but he soon realized how hopeless the situation was. The child was already dead, the demon taking over his body entirely. Zaphrael did what he had to, eradicating the host from existence. Unfortunately, he didn't explain to Lucretia, who, desperate as she was, made a pact with the demon, becoming its host instead. The two of them clashed many times afterwards, eventually meeting at the Barred Gate as Dura was sealing the Hypogeans away. Zaphrael was the one to deliver the final push, embracing Lucretia and apologizing for the pain he caused her, before being sealed away together with the Hypogeans. Because of Lucretia, all church stories and reports of Zaphrael were erased and it was as though he never existed in the first place.

Class: Mage

Personal opinion: Unpopular but Zaphrael is amazing. The more I learned about him, the more awesome he became to me and I really hate how this fandom treats him. If the roles were reversed, I just know people would despise him because this isn't about what he did or didn't do. This is about people siding with a hysterical woman over a duty-bound man. But anyway, back to Zaph. His lack of understanding of feelings honestly makes him really interesting to me. He's someone who always put his duty before everything else in his life and the clash of his logic with Lucretia's emotion is just really cool. I wish we got more people honestly taking their time to consider his side of the story because as it is, he gets written off as a jerk when really, he's just a bit lost and bad at feelings.

Headcanon: Though I usually don't like assigning sexualities to characters, I seriously like the headcanon of asexual Zaphrael. It makes a lot of sense as his own story never even mentions Lucretia at all and her feelings for him seem utterly one-sided. Zaphrael really only ever focused on Dura and on his duty and never pursued any romantic or sexual relationship when he very well could. Just my two cents tho.
