CHAPTER ONE : ALL THAT GLITTERS . . . !
Callum Smith was the textbook definition of an old-money preppy boy.
He wore neat, crisp, flawless polos and buttonups every other day. When he wasn’t wearing that, he’d be wearing a tight turtleneck or a tank-top. His hair was platinum blonde, long and tied at the end. He held himself with stature, chin always up and shoulders always level. His baby blue eyes contradicted the rest of his appearance, however. They were soft, warm, gentle.
In reality? Callum was more like his eyes than anything else.
His home life wasn’t great. He had three siblings- two younger and one older. They were annoying as hell. Callum’s parents were cruel and their standards even more so. They went to church every Sunday, sometimes even twice a week. Prayed before every meal. Catholicism was drilled into the minds of the Smith children. But Callum? He was different. Non-conforming. On the inside, at least.
The closet was where he stayed. Metaphorically, of course. Callum Smith was not a boy, and he was decidedly not straight nor religious.
He flinched at the name ‘Callum’. He was Cal. Not Callum.
He winced at the sentence, ‘When are you gonna get a girlfriend?’
Cal. He was Cal. He was pan. He used all normative pronouns and even neopronouns (zhe/zhem). Genderfluid and not Callum. But if he were to tell his parents that? He’d be kicked out- or worse- in a second. He couldn’t even tell his siblings.
For example: take the eldest daughter, Juliette Smith. A very smart and pretty girl- who also was preppy and a jerk. She was Cal’s Irish twin, and they were in the same grade- despite this, Juliette wanted nothing to do with her little brother. Anyone who mistook them for simply ‘twins’ would get a death glare from the girl and some choice words. Yet, everyone still assumed they were twins. Having gotten used to it, he chose to just refer to her as his twin. His sister eventually gave up and stopped arguing, settling for sideways glares.
And she had an equally rude counterpart. Blake Rogers.
The two of them had been dating for ~2 weeks at this point. When Juliette would bring Blake to the Smith home, Cal would shut himself in his room to avoid listening to his parents compliment the black-clad delinquent who smelled distinctly of smoke and dirt. To be that dirty? Eugh. Cal shuddered just thinking about it.
It was school now. Cal went to a public school- much to Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s dismays- and he was in his 3rd period class. The only class he had with Blake Rogers. Cal stared at his phone, trying to ignore the glare burning into the back of his head. The teacher walked in and immediately wrote on the board:
“PARTNER PROJECT TODAY”.
Cool. Okay. People normally were all begging to be Cal’s research partner. He did- in a way- like being popular.
A collective groan rang out across the room as the teacher wrote underneath the previous statement: “RANDOMLY ASSIGNED PARTNERS. NO SWITCHING.”
The teacher clicked a button on their remote and the screen at the front of the room changed to show names. Cal searched lazily for his name on the board, then froze when he saw who he was partnered with:
Blake Rogers.

Of course he was stuck in his only class with Callum Smith. the most pretentious bitch this side of the ocean.
It didn't help that Blake was dating his twin sister, either. Cal was looking at him like he wished he was dead on the spot.
He just stuck to his desk, browsing through his phone like he didn't notice the blond boy staring at him with murder in his eyes.
The Smith family was notorious for having smart children. most of them became lawyers or doctors or stuff like that, it was a wonder that William Smith, Juliette and Cal's father, sent his kids to public school anyway.
Blake and Cal were two sides of a very odd coin. Blake was the scrounge of the school, the kid smoking cigarettes under the bleachers and making out with his girlfriend in the janitors closet during passing period. Cal, on the other hand, was pretentious. he was always tidy in polos and button-ups, hair tied up in a nest ponytail. he was the type of kid Blake assumed played golf and hated the smell of marijuana.
