How do I think about the designs:
--I study the anatomy of reference animals and create a simulation of what the characteristics would be like if they were humans. Ofc that not everything is perfect but I try to make it as realistic/functional as possible

Do they suffocate if they stay out of the water?
-- Yes and no, it will depend on which link we are talking about:
In order to become human again, they need to get out of the water and be completely dry. For some this is a simple task, for others it is a nightmare.
Wind, Hyrule, and Legend are the only ones who don't suffer from suffocation (or other serious health problems....well, wind is a special case) when they return to being human.
Warriors, Wild, and Twilight go through some discomfort but manage to hold on well. (they may have some lung problems but that's for later lol)
But for Sky, Time and Four...... It's a nightmare

Sky and Time suffocate under their own weight (they weigh around 2 tons) which causes several health problems: fracture in the bones, internal inflammations, skin rashes, cardiorespiratory problems.... in short, it's not pleasant for them at all xD
Life isn't easy for Four, either, although he doesn't suffocate under his own weight, he suffers from dehydration of his skin which causes skin rashes, blisters and burns
I don't think I need to explain why these three don't like the mermaid thing as a whole, for them it's more like a curse.
Are Dark link, shadow, Vaati, Ganondorf, ghirahim and others mermaids?

--They're their own weapons, each link has their own unique abilities for combat.
but four is a special case: he creates his own weapons for combat (including a pistol shrimp xD)
