i think the thing that interests me about zero is that, when it comes down to it, regarding baku, he is essentially a coward.

zero loves his son, not as much as a father really should, but there's some there.

because of the nightmares getting in the way of zeztz, zero is so cowardly when it comes to his own son that he's scared of baku even touching him because it risks opening up the floodgates to zero that he / does / care deep down.

so, zero never shows it when anyone is looking, even if there's moments where you can see he wants to (e.g. with him taking the photo of baku on the bike, it's only when baku's adoptive dad leaves and baku isn't looking that he takes it.).

zero prioritised CODE over his own flesh and blood, so much that he had his own agents raise his child for him.

and when zero does get a chance to be a dad - he fucks it up and can't break his cowardly habit. he hides behind a robotic face, he hides the truth from baku and therefore drives his son away.

he only seems to ever properly show his face again to his own son when his son is, essentially, going to die.
