I think one of the reasons dragons very quickly trust Hiccup and just mellow down and bond with him because they see him and they go, "Little hooman, kind creecher, smol bean. Must protecc."

The gradual character development, as the series progresses, from something like this to the point they all come to count on each other with their lives no matter how insane or crazy one gets or how serious or harsh the conditions become. I love this about RoB/DoB and RTTE. They've all grown so much!
