I potted up my tomatillo seedlings today.

For those who don't know, some nightshade plants like potatoes, tomatoes, and tomatillos will grow new roots from the fuzzies along their stems if they're buried in soil.

So I planted my tomatillo seedlings, which were getting kinda lanky, into bigger, deeper seed cells so they have the chance to grow more roots before I put them in the ground.

Speaking of nightshades, 4 of the 6 tomatoes that got hit by the late frost are not coming back. I should have replaced them with new starts last week honestly but wanted to see if they'd come back.

Also speaking of that late frost, the peppers are kinda coming back, but the brassicas really aren't. I'm gonna have to just give up on them because it's going to start getting too hot for them anyway. I really should probably be trying to grow those in the fall I guess. I might just put some flowers in their place. Something to support the pollinators.

Took this photo on 1-5-2025 in the a.m.. These herbs and veggies have survived 2 hard frosts thus far in early winter. The next 10 nights will be at or below 26 degrees for multiple hours. I’m curious how these seed saved plants will do. They have a great memory of previous years of cold so fingers crossed for stronger plants in late February.

The crape myrtle we planted last week is going through transplant shock and I'm so worried it isn't going to make it. The leaves are going fall colored.

We had gotten a ton of rain for several days after we planted it but it's been a few days so we gave it a big drink yesterday around 6. Fingers crossed it helps.

The purple leaf plum, blueberry bushes, tea olives, camellia, and loropetalum are all looking okay so far. The camellia and loropetalum both have bright pink flowers even!

October 19, 2023 Sugar Snap Pea Seedlings

I planted sugar snap peas on October 10 and today I noticed they had their first tendrils reaching out. Soon they'll find the trellis arch made out of a bent cattle panel+ t-posts. I'm hoping to have pea pods to snack on all winter, these even tolerate short periods of freezing temps.

2/10/21 ~ Tomatoes soaking up their morning light 🌟 High is 57 degrees today ~ if it’s sunny they may* be able to go outside for a while. If not, they will be chilling on the shelf with some fake light 🙃🍅
