Marseille, Pointe Rouge. Le Parc de la Redonne. Ici une Clématite (Clematis flammula), assez étrange car poussant au sol au lieu de grimper en liane. La fleur jaune aux feuilles foliolées est un Tribule terrestre (ou Croix-de-Malte)

Cet endroit semble être le reste d'une grande campagne où broutaient des chevaux. Les premières années que ma famille s'était installée à la Pointe Rouge, on les voyait en passant par la traverse Parangon (alors à peine plus large qu'une voiture, et coincée entre deux grands murs. Maintenant c'est un large boulevard...)

Arizona poppies (Kallstroemia grandiflora).

We are in the midst of a monsoon superbloom, and these brilliant wildflowers are on full display everywhere. These photos are from a vacant field by my home in Sierra Vista. Despite the common name, Arizona poppies are not papavers, but in the Zygophyllaceae or caltrop family.

AKA 3-corner-jack, goathead, bull's head, gopher-head, cat-head, devil's eyelashes, devil's-thorn, devil's-weed, puncturevine, and tackweed.

A singularly vicious plant that wouldn't go astray in the armoury of evil D&D characters, with woody fruit easily capable of puncturing tyres and feet. It's native to the hotter, drier parts of Eurasia and Africa, but is a nightmare of a weed in Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Don't bother wearing shoes, it won't help.

For some godforsaken reason, an extract has been sold as a health supplement since the 1980s, in the belief that it enhances testosterone. It doesn't, of course.
