sam  struggled  finding  something  for  hawk’s  birthday,  not  because  she  didn’t  know  what  he  liked,  but  because  they  both  came  from  wealthy  enough  families,  and  didn’t  really  have  any  wants  or  needs  that  weren’t  already  covered.  then  she  saw  an  ad  for  the  california  raptor  center,  and  she  found  the  perfect  gift  for  her  perfect  boy.  “happy  birthday  handsome,”  she  greeted  her  sleepyhead  boyfriend  when  she  came  back  into  their  bedroom.  that’s  what  it  was,  theirs.  their  bedrooms,  plural,  one  at  each  house,  their  puppy,  their  lives.  they  were  young,  but  they  didn’t  care.

she  was  carrying  a  tray,  and  on  it  was  a  plate  of  confetti  waffles,  but  instead  of  maple  syrup,  they  were  covered  in  chocolate  sauce  and  more  sprinkles.  she  knew  eli  wasn’t  big  on  sweets,  but  they  just  needed  a  little  snack  to  hold  them  over  for  now  before  the  big  birthday  dinner  she  had  planned  for  later.  she  also  had  a  can  of  aerosol  whipped  cream,  both  for  the  pancakes  and  for  a  little  birthday  fun.  she  set  the  tray  down  on  the  bed  and  leaned  in  for  the  first  of  many  birthday  kisses.  “oh!”  she  exclaimed,  turning  to  grab  a  bag  off  the  nightstand.  inside  was  a  stuffed  animal  hawk,  a  certificate  that  said  grasshopper’s  name,  and  a  photo  of  the  bird  they  adopted.  “guess  we  have  a  fur  baby  and  a  feather  baby  now.”
