Hello! Alex here :) say hello to my little friends! I’ll be blogging about our time on Paul, a little planet in a not so far away galaxy!

Alexander Burk (Alex): Me! The Botanist

Pronouns: He/Him

Age: 37

I’m the heart of the team! As in, I love everything and everyone here. I’m so exited to be here and I can’t wait to show you guys what we’re up to! I like plums, s’mores, flora, the color orange, and making friends. I don’t like white chocolate, avocados, the heat, or when stores glue plastic flowers onto real cacti.

Divya Wynn (Divya, Divvy, Div): Safety/security

Pronouns: she/they

Age: 32

Hi, I like stories around the campfire, the color pink, working out, peanut butter toast, and kangaroos. I dislike breaking promises, people who suck on purpose, the cold, and tomatos. See ya 👏 (that’s me high-fiving you)

Steph Yorick (Steph, Seph): Zoologist

Pronouns: They/them

Age: 38

Hey, I’m the team’s zoologist, journalist, and sketch artist. Uh, I like animals, napping, hammocks, grapes, the color yellow, and drawing. I guess I don’t like uh… having to peel oranges, flavored water, sweating, fighting, or getting hurt I guess? Thanks for looking at my entries that Alex posts.

Marika Ramana (Marika, Mary, Mar): The IT person

Pronouns: she/her

Age: 30

Yo, good to meet ‘cha. I like building stuff, jokes, a good pasta, swimming, the color green, looking cool, and a nice whisky. I don’t like coffee, dogs, centipedes, mud, or pollen. See ya around (not literally)

Matthew Butcher (Matt): meteorologist

Pronouns: he/him

Age: 36

Hey. I enjoy reading, rain (the sound, not being in it), turtlenecks, the color blue, cats, and jolly ranchers. I don’t enjoy loud noises, being in the rain, crowds, people who won’t learn new things, and also teenagers scare me. Have fun.

Our trip to the desert has ended and we’re back at base camp. We brought a lot of specimens back with us to study and log, but for now, Steph finished a tropical plant entry!

Alright, as a botanist, I’ve got a love-hate relationship with insects. I do have to admit, however, that these worms are very resourceful. (They also don’t eat plants so there’s a point for them in my book). These little buggers were very difficult to capture. They can disappear back into the sand in less than the blink of an eye. We had quite the brainstorming session to figure out how to trap one, let alone get close enough to one without it disappearing. Eventually, Divya had the idea to basically fish them out with a strong lure that it would close around, and we managed to yank one up and in a terrarium.

We had a long day traveling to the desert, and we’re temporarily posted here so that Matt can do some weather readings, and Steph and I can make some more discoveries! Let me tell you, this desert is bright. Blindingly so. We need to wear special eye protection while we’re here because so far, two of the species we’ve discovered reflect or refract the suns light. Here’s one of the critters Seph logged so far, and he’s working on the other one about dew worms now. We’ve seen mass- migrations in this area via satellite that happens twice a year, but we weren’t sure what it was until today!

I haven’t seen one of these myself but those who have were given quite the fright. Night Walkers have never paid us any mind, but Seph is up at 3am every other night trying to learn more. He’s never found one during the day, and we’ve got no clue where something that big can hide… kinda hope I never see one of these.

Simians are violent… but they’re SO CUTE!! Why do they have to be little murder machines T.T

One of the staff here was unfortunate enough to cross one while taking a piss one night… he’s ok thanks to our medical team but, he’s the reason we know what the spore inhalation causes. The bite knowledge is thanks to another poor soul who, before we knew about the spores, tried to keep one of these critters from stealing her hot dog one night. We now have precautions for them, needless to say. Just let them take your hot dog…

This is the first species that Steph recorded! These beautiful things are everywhere here along the coast, and thankfully aren’t hostile towards us as long as we keep our distance. A few of them have wandered into camp to check us out, but for the most part, they mind their own business.
