There wasn’t much to do to start was there? This isn’t the normal job Shae was used to, being the grim reaper and all. Jobs usually have some sort of explanation. A briefing to get you started. Something. But not this one apparently.
Though, there isn’t much that could really prepare one for what could happen in this place. Rules don’t follow logic, most of it isn’t truly real, and honestly it is just the same everyday. Almost everyday..
Grim had left everyone alone almost completely after it all. Understandably so, after everything he and all the others went through in the past few months.
Maybe paying attention to his instructions back then would’ve been more helpful… but Shae had always thought that Grim would be working as the reaper for… kind of forever honestly. Why soul he have to pay attention to something he thought would never happen?
That never was here now. Grim was gone and everything was just left there for him.
Shae chose this. He decided to take the responsibility of being the new reaper instead of going home. But who else would’ve? One of his other “kids” he found along his road of destruction and despair? That would end in more chaos than the first days he found them…
Regardless, this is where Shae sits now. On the docks near now his ferry, waiting for the next souls to pay up to take the ride to their afterlife.
Shae would’ve been at work today. Riding his bike to his shift. Snacking on the job. Talking to his friends and family. Hm… Friend and family. That’s not right either. Shae would’ve been talking to his friend. What was his name again?? It’s hard to remember nowadays. Demon or something… not the point though, is it?
The point is, Shae doesn’t have anyone anymore. Pushing Grim away and then right at his last chance, Grim decides to give up and leave.
He was alone here. Alone other than the souls and occasional visits. But at least things were better than the last time he saw this place.
Sure, there were giant endless pits in the ground that seemed bottomless and were hard not to trip and fall into, and sure the river seems louder than before, but there were flowers blooming now!
Deep purple and indigo and blue flowers with golden centers, all surrounding the void chasms in the ground. They were nice, but also made it difficult to tell where the pit starts and the flowers end…
Shae liked to sit around them still, taking the risk for a moment of peace and rest. Finding that time was difficult. The shack felt cramped and suffocating with memories of what he’s seen and dealt with. The docks were always a bother to deal with because of the souls and the river. The forest was something he was warned of because of some… creature out there. “Him” or whatever its name was. But no animals ever came out of those woods. Honestly, Shae can’t even recall hearing or seeing anything come out of those woods ever.
But, he had never been given any reason not to like the pits… other than the obvious risk, but Shae wasn’t about to care about that right now. This was nice. A place to go that for some reason felt more comforting than home in the shack. A place that made him feel like he had someone watching over him. That’s what he cared about…
…Maybe he should’ve cared for the risks though.
Maybe the Nightshade Flowers should’ve given him a feeling of hesitation.
Maybe the humming and song that always subconsciously drew him in should’ve been a warning.
Maybe he should’ve just left and went back home to Connecticut.
But he didn’t. Now everything is wrong and upside down. But wasn’t that what he wanted? Wasn’t that what it wanted? Doesn’t making it happy make Shae happy? Maybe it does. In some sick, twisted way it does.
But this was his fault nonetheless. Whether he’s happy with the result is fairly debatable.
