have some more pictures of city of rocks :D
we camped inside of a real forest last night. no more desert! everything is beautiful! whee!
Yesterday we drove across Idaho and half of Oregon to get to this lovely campsite on the John Day River. We spent the hot evening sipping whisky on the black sand beach and stayed up way past our granny bedtimes. This morning we slept in, sat on the beach, and swam in the remarkably deep and wide spot in the otherwise small-ish river.
On the way out of Almo, ID (City of Rocks is pretty amazingly deep in the middle of nowhere) Pauline suddenly said, "Oh!" because there was a herd of cows crossing in front of her. There was a family with pre-adolescent children on horseback herding them and Pauline expressed some feelings.
At City of Rocks we decided to 'start' by climbing Sanocranium (5.8, 7 pitches, sport). It's actually five pitches of 5.0-5.4 slab, three or four patches of maybe 5.6-5.7 slab, one pitch of awkward vertical 5.8 up a quartz vein, and an imaginary pitch? It was more of an adventure than we expected because we were dumb and took our (mostly empty) full size packs and then we were dumb-er and decided it would be easier to haul our packs. Up 5.2 slab. Yeah... But look at the view! There were also swallows zooming around us like tiny fighter jets the whole time. They must have been doing 90mph--you could barely track them. We wondered how they could possibly observe enough of their surroundings, but decided designing a swallow vision experiment would probably be unreasonably difficult. Speaking of fighter jets, an actual fighter jet flew super low through the neighboring valley during the pack-hauling debacle. It looked like it was below us and we can't have been more than 1500' above the valley floor, probably less. So probably it wasn't actually below us. It might have done a barrel roll--it was at least sideways for a bit. When we got back to the car we discovered some art someone had left us.
@president-bird we have cookies in the cookie box
I hate that I’m constantly surrounded by a cloud of flies these days. It makes me feel like Beelzebub, and I’m not really into that… Lucifer, sure. But not Beelzebub.

Hello, Idaho. We've nearly made it to Almo and the glorious City of Rocks where we'll climb until we bleed tomorrow. And then probably keep climbing.
