i like to think that johnny never truly had a friend/fall in love with anyone before meeting gyro, because in his whole life people only showed interest in him because of his fame and money. (and his persona of a partier, cocky, womanizer guy didn't help too much either)

after being shoot, people only seen him as a useless, miserable cripped dude, and all his glory and fans disappeared overnight. he discovered that no one really cared about him, just about his status.

but gyro doesn't treated johnny like a fallen celebrity or a burden. he teasesed him, arguied with him, challenged, teached, and, most importantly, stayed beside him during the worst moment of his life, gyro gave him a sense of hope, a purpose, a new horizon. it was the first time someone truly liked him back, not because os his reputation, but for what he really was.
