He felt warmth on his face first, his consciousness returning to him slowly. His head was already giving off sharp jolts of pain every few seconds which must have brought him back but also made him wince. He wanted to keep his eyes closed, but the growing curiosity at who was touching his face became too strong and he slowly opened his eyes. It took a good minute for his vision to stop being blurry and his eyes focused on Thea. She looked worried and scared, and she was saying something but he couldn’t hear a word.
“Aleks! Aleks!” she shouted when she saw his eyes flutter open, her fingers cupped his face, eyes wide. “Please, keep your eyes open. You’ve been knocked really hard. Please, Aleks, keep your eyes open.” Her voice was reaching a desperate pitch. “Anyone? Is anyone around? I need help!” she cried, looking around. But it was no use. The party was inside. No one was around to hear her cries, to come to their rescue. She would have to do it alone. She didn’t know if she could. She moved a hand under his body, trying to lift him up. “Aleks. Can you hear me? Please, I need you to stand up. Please, please, please.”

The gold, and deep red colours of the decor in the hall had been enough to make Aleks’ eyes water upon entering the room, and when he left, his eyes had to adjust to the moonlight that was now reflecting brightly over the grounds. His mind running over the conversation turned confrontation with Thea, and adding in the watery eyes from the change in lighting, Aleks didn’t take note of the two shadows following him, even when he’d been struck fully on the right side of his head across his ear. He collapsed almost instantly, completely stunned, his mind now blank as the ringing in his ears overwhelmed him. He laid on his side, inert; unaware of who had struck him or that Thea was looking for him.
Thea heard Aleks fall before she saw him, eyes widening to the size of saucers when she finally did see him. Shit. Shit shit shit. She scurried behind a wall, peering out shyly, trying to come up with a plan of action, but she was drawing a blank. All she could think of was Aleks, her friend fallen in her line of vision. She didn’t think any longer, darting out with a cry of his name, hoping her noticing would be enough to cause his assailant to run off. “Aleks! Aleks, please can you hear me? Are you okay? Please, please open your eyes!”
“Is the wifi down?”
“I’m not mad about that. I’m mad about the way information is spread on the internet.”
“Well….do you want to break up with him?”
“No. I like him, but he upset me, so kind of yes. But it kind of sucks not seeing him. I don’t know what I want.”
“You think you broke up with him? How are you not sure about that?”
“Because we had a really bad fight, and I haven’t spoken to him since.”
“One of those articles was about you, right? You okay?”
“I’m fine. Just grounded indefinitely, and I think I broke up with my boyfriend, who I wasn’t sure was my boyfriend. It’s still very fuzzy what’s going on.”
“Nope, not really… not long at all. Sorry, this is a downer topic, I’m sorry you’re grounded”
“That’s not such a big deal... I-- uhh-- I’m sorry for bringing it up at all.”
“And yet the world revolves around it.”
“It’s a dangerous, dangerous tool.”
“No, don’t worry about it. It’s okay, it’s been three months now”
“Three months? That doesn’t sound terribly long.”
caleb didn’t say anything after that. it was clear that his explanations were falling on deaf ears. it wasn’t a light hearted conversation, and certainly not one he considered casual. but the morning didn’t cut it for thea, and to say that wasn’t the majority of what had silenced him would be untrue. his eyes were down to and fast, looking at their combined laps before his elbow propped up on the window sill and formed a rest for his temple out of the backs of his knuckles.
“I’m going home,” she said, pushing open the door beside her and extricating herself from his lap to stand in the parking lot. She hadn’t thought past getting out, though, because she hadn’t brought her phone, nor did she have a car of her own. She stood in the crisp night air, folding her arms across her chest and walking away from the car. That was the farthest her plan had gotten. She needed some air, to think, to get away from him right now.
“cool. well, i’m going to be the first one to laugh when he dumps your sorry ass. i mean, seriously, what do you expect from a relationship with caleb? because they don’t last long. but hey, enjoy it while you can. and then soon enough, you’ll have no one.”
“I am trying to make him happy, so I don’t know why you want me to end up alone, although I’m sure it’s because you think if he’s in a relationship with you it’ll last. If it won’t last with me, it won’t last with you.”
the boy so good at words was finally saying all the wrong things. or at least, that’s how it seemed every time her expression broke a little more with each and every word. so they were right, he was bad news. and so they were right, he was insane. he’d accept it after a while, he was sure, but not while her kisses felt torn and full of hurt. not while he had to cup her face to keep from slicing nail prints into his own fists. “no.” she didn’t get to brush it off. “no, we’re going to talk about it. when we’re not high and when you’re not gonna cry and when things are better.” he promised, brushing strands of hair out of her face. “we’re gonna talk about it in the morning and everything’s going to be okay.”
She looked at him, eyes wide and blue and trying to disguise the emotions she was feeling. “I’m not going to cry,” she said. “I don’t cry about everything, you know?” Her tone was accusatory, angry, and she bit her lip as soon as the words were out. But she didn’t apologize, not like usual. She didn’t take it back, not like she once would have, trying to stray away from the possibility for conflict. “Besides,” she said, leaning backward, careful not to hit the horn. “It doesn’t sound like we have anything to talk about, so we don’t have to talk.” She didn’t look at him again, looking down at her own nail-bitten hands.
caleb returned each kiss as they burned in the quiet, two bodies crammed into the driver’s seat but still possibly more comfortable than he’d been in the past few nights all together. his hands rested on her hips but didn’t make any moves to advance the innocent gesture into more than what it was, eyes locked on hers so unmoving that they could have dried right in their sockets. i more than like you. you know that right? that was when it got dangerous. he nodded. “we’ll talk about it in the morning, okay baby?”
“We don’t have to talk about it all.” Her words were quick, barely a whisper. Her heart sank in her chest. She’d never liked to be vulnerable, at least not when she knew that was what she was doing. Especially not when being vulnerable was going so wrong. “Forget I said anything.” How many times had she said that line? Just while they’d been in the car? Three times? Four? It sounded stupider each time. “C’mere,” she murmured, pressing herself into him again, this kiss much rougher than the others, meant to drown out any thoughts or words either of them could say. Her fingers moved down his chest, coming to rest on the buckle of his belt, letting him finish that thought if he wanted to.
“try spending practically all your time with him not including family events. and the number of times he’s snorted coke off my dashboard is ridiculous so you should watch yourself. because no one knows caleb as well as you think you do. he’s undefined. and because you think you can understand him just shows how much he hasn’t let on about himself to you,” he shrugged crossing his arms with a raised eyebrow. “a cumrag is just a dump for his cum whenever he’s too high to pull out his wallet and pay for a prostitute or bat his eyes at someone to get him to do whatever he wants. ah, but if looks aren’t important, why are you so adamant on telling me that i’m not attractive. you know that looks are half the battle with caleb.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever fully understand him. But I do think I can be good for him and you-- you can’t. I don’t need to understand him better to know that.” She flowered at him. “That’s not what I am to him. We are more than-- than just-- sex. And I didn’t say you weren’t attractive. I just said you weren’t attractive enough for someone to want to pay you to be with them. And Caleb seems to think I’m pretty damn attractive, so...”
she held his face as if the dainty fingers could hold all the broken parts in place, brain like a desert island but so full of oasis mirage. he’d die in there one day, he was sure, but for now he was happy to be alive and gifted with the beautiful view of sky colored eyes. following suit, he took a breath. sniff, speak. “i really, really like you too.” and maybe they could just stay there for a bit. he tugged her forward with the intent of getting her into his lap, the driver’s seat cramped but he didn’t mind if she didn’t.
She let out a soft squeal as she slid across the divide into his lap, turning her body so she faced him, and pressing as closely to him as she possibly could to avoid pressing the sensitive horn behind her. “You are so special, Caleb,” she said, before she was kissing him gently, slowly, not like their other kisses so full of fire and longing and a need to never stop. Her hands still rested on his cheeks, gently like the petals of flowers, cupping together the most beautiful center. She broke the kiss after a moment, hooded eyes looking at him through thick lashes. “I more than like you. You know that right?” She couldn’t say the word, but at least he could know it.
cold palms did their best to rub some sort of warmth into caleb’s face, but came up short; their best efforts proving no better than the simple elimination of the smallest bit of fatigue. there was no doubt that caleb thought quite something of himself, but that didn’t mean he was blind. at least not entirely. you are everything i wish i could be. he watched the words form on her lips and damn near wondered how they’d ended up where they were. cocaine on the rim of her nostril and staring eat one another like they were the goddamn sun. you are wonderful. “ … don’t wish to be me. you’ve got millenniums to live and so much life in your eyes. i’m sorry if i ever steal it. i just know i’m running out of time.” he was sure he made no sense to her. maybe he sounded crazy. but that was easy to explain. he was already insane.
Her brow furrowed at his words, and she turned her entire body to face him, leaning over the gap between their seats toward him, bringing her hands to rest first on his shoulders, then his cheeks, pulling him closer so she could look him square in the eyes. A sniff, and then she spoke. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she started, tongue drawing a line across her lower lip as she paused to consider what she would say next. “You are not running out of time. And you are not stealing my goddamn life. You are showing me how to be alive. You are the best part of my life, the only part that doesn’t constantly lie to me.” Except for right now, but she would overlook that in the interest of reminding him that he was the incredible person she knew he was. “I like you so much it hurts sometimes, and I wouldn’t change that for the world.”
