A Place of Angels and Ghosts || [Sam&Ruby]
“Which is why I think it might be wise if you don’t stay much longer. I don’t want him to get you,” he told her. “Yeah, but you love it,” he replied to her comment about him being a dork. He had been told by people all his life that he was a nerd, a dork, a geek, all of those things. Sam just figured they were jealous because he was smarter than them. Hearing her yawn made him want to as well, and he did soon after. He took this opportunity to stretch as well, and ended up lying on his back with his limbs sprawled everywhere. This included his arm that was now resting across Ruby’s legs. “This is nice,” he commented, closing his eyes.
"How long has he been gone anyway?" she asked. "And really? Aw, thanks," Ruby then said, her tone sarcastic but her smile playful. She stretched her arms above her head then let fall back to her sides before she said any more. "Nah," she said simply, shaking her head. She looked down at him as he stretched out and she couldn't help the soft laugh that escaped her lips. She moved to where she was leaning back on her elbows. "Don't you look comfortable?" she commented, an eyebrow raised. She raised a hand to rub her eyes tiredly. She shook off the wave of sleepiness and shifted to where she was on her side, the side of her head resting on the palm of her hand.

“Yeah that’s true,” he agreed. Weirder things had happened. You just had to get over it and move on. Sometimes it was just better not knowing. “I don’t really know. You probably deserve a good stab in the gut. Maybe I’ll leave that for Dean,” he joked. “No. I just figure there’s no point in being unwelcoming. What’s done is done. Being angry at you isn’t going to change anything.” Sam had always been quite mature, he had been forced to grow up quickly. But he supposed Dean had had to faster than him. He was in charge of looking after him. But the two had been on their own a lot. Sam preferred to think that they looked after each other. He ignored her question about leaving and answered her next one instead. “Yeah, if you look close enough over there, you can see the shape of a unicorn,” he told her, pointing at a spot on the ceiling.
"Oh, I'm sure he wouldn't think twice about doing it again," she joked, shaking her head the slightest bit. "True. Besides, it wouldn't have stopped me anyway," she commented, half-smiling to show she was joking. As he spoke on, she noticed he had decided to ignore her first question. She couldn't help but laugh as he pointed to a spot in the ceiling. Ruby shifted to where she was leaning on her elbows, looking up at the spot her was pointing at. "You're such a dork," she teased when she spotted it, moving back to her original position with her hands behind her head. She yawned as she did so, squeezing her eyes shut until it passed.

“Weird.” He said once she had told him her version of her return. “Though it’s not something that hasn’t happened before,” he shrugged. “I probably wouldn’t have been so welcoming if you had visited sooner. I’d probably have grabbed that knife and sent you back to the pit… again.” And he wasn’t kidding in the slightest. He lifted his arm so he could see the watch on his wrist. It had been two hours since Dean had left. He hoped that he was enjoying himself while Sam sat here starving with a demon to keep him company. Though he was kind of grateful he hadn’t showed up just yet. He was sure that the sight of the pair sitting on the bed having a nice talk wouldn’t be taken very well. “Dean’s meant to be back soon,” Sam commented, lifting his eyes to the ceiling. He tried to find patterns in the texture, it was something he did when he was trying to fall asleep. But this time he was trying to avoid the gaze of Ruby.
"I couldn't care less if it was weird, I'm just glad I don't have to deal with it anymore," she said, filling her cheeks with air then releasing it slowly. She laughed sarcastically, figuring no less. "I wouldn't have expected any different. So why are you being so... Not welcoming, exactly..." she allowed herself to trail off, shrugging. She wasn't exactly sure what word she was looking for, but maybe 'welcoming' was close enough. Either way, she was a bit surprised -- even if it was the less angry Winchester. When he brought up Dean, she shook her lead, laughing slightly. "Is that my cue to leave?" she asked, sarcasm evident in her tone as she rolled her head to look at him next to her. She found his looking intently up at the ceiling. "Something interesting up there?" the petite girl asked, raising an eyebrow.Â

“How long have you been around? You should have come sooner. Or maybe not,” he amended. He was doubtful that if she had come to see her before now he might not be so welcoming towards her. “You can say that again,” he replied when she said trouble loves them. That was definitely true. Sam could only remember a handful of times when he and Dean hadn’t been in some kind of trouble, and those times never lasted long. He moved to sit next to her on the bed, kicking off his shoes before he did so. “There’s always interesting stories,” he told her. “I don’t really know what to tell you, though. Where do I start?” He ran a hand through his hair and cleared his throat. “How about you tell me how you’re back and I’ll think up some stories to tell you?” He suggested.
She bit her lip, thinking for a second or two. "I've been back for maybe two months? That sounds about right." She nodded once, stretching out again as he sat next to her. "Hey, I might have came sooner if I thought I'd be welcomed with open arms," she remarked, laughing a bit. A ghost of a smile continued to dance across her lips. Though it faltered when he mentioned her telling him how she was back. "Hell, I have no idea. Last I remember was being stabbed by brother dearest and then hell. There was torture" -- she flinched a bit at the memory -- "but then I found myself in the woods outside of some city in who-knows-where after what felt like forever." Her eyebrows furrowed together thoughtfully as she spoke. "Somehow going to the pit feels worse the second time," she commented dryly to herself more than anything, chuckling once humorlessly. She ran a hand through her curls before pulling it off over one shoulder. She herself got in her own fair share of trouble. It didn't always end well, her last experience proving that.

“Okay, you win. I’m tall,” he admitted with a dramatic sigh. Sam could honestly say that he did miss Ruby. Even if she had betrayed him. It had been a while since that, a lot had happened between then and now. And even if it made him stupid, he was willing to give her another chance. He didn’t know how she was here, he thought that Dean had killed her. But he had been through enough supernatural crap to know that dead things could come back. The dead didn’t always stay dead. So he wasn’t surprised that she was here. “You know you could always drop in and see me if you wanted to,” he told her. He still didn’t trust her completely, but he knew what he needed to do if anything went wrong, so he might as well be nice. “I’m trying to stay out of trouble, but you know me. It seems to find me,” he told her, laughing a little. He walked over to the bed she had settled herself on and sat down near her feet. “Do you want something to eat or anything?” he asked her.
She grinned when he agreed with her, laughing gently. Though she wasn't going to complain, she was surprised he was being so nice. Considering Dean had killed her with her own knife. She didn't know what brought her back, but Ruby wasn't going to get into it. "Well that's what I'm doing now," she responded with a one shoulder shrug. "Good point. Trouble loves you two," she said, a slight grin on her lips. She shifted when her sat down, sitting up a bit more so he'd have more room. Ruby played mindlessly with one of the rings on her fingers, sliding it on and off. She shook her head 'no' at his next question. "No thanks, I'm good." She motioned to the space next to her in a way that invited him to sit there. "So, why don't you tell me all about the Amazing Adventures of Sam Winchester?" she teased him, smiling. "There have to be some interesting stories in there somewhere."

“Isn’t it?” he asked her, suddenly remembering that it was in his hand. He lifted it up a little as if he were going to point it at her, and then lowered it again, smiling at her. “Sure,” he said, and he bent down to lift up the corner of the welcome mat by the door. Underneath was a line of salt, which he drew a line in with his finger, he stood back up and held his arm out for her to come inside. “I’m not tall, you’re just short,” he replied teasingly. Once she was inside, he bent down and fixed the line of salt, covering it with the mat again. No other demons would be coming in here tonight. He wasn’t even sure he should be letting Ruby in here. But he knew how to take care of himself, and he’d handled her plenty of times before. He shut the door behind her and walked over to his bed, placing his gun underneath it. “So, what’s up?” he asked her. He didn’t know why she was here, she usually had a reason for coming to visit him. “Did you miss me?”
"I hope not," she replied lightly, jokingly. She licked her lips, chuckling almost silently as he raised the gun. She smiled back at him when he lowered it and bent down to break the salt barrier under the mat to allow her in. Once he did that and signaled for her to come on in, she did that. "No, you're definitely just freakishly tall," the brunette retorted as she walked over to one of the beds and perched on it, leaning back against the headboard with her hands behind her head. She crossed her legs, getting comfortable. She heard the door shut and Sam walk over to put the gun away before another word was uttered. She laughed at his question, shrugging. "I suppose you could say that," she answered, a smirk dancing across her lips. She hadn't seen the two boys since she had the younger Winchester literally raise hell. "It gets boring moving from town to town. And lonely." There was a teasing lilt to her tone as she turned her head to look at Sam. "How about you? Gotten into any trouble lately?"Â She reached over to the bedside table, picking up one of the items on it. It was something about the hotel, contact info and such. She set it back down where she found it, then she picked up another paper on the messy top of the small oak table.

Sam was sitting in the motel room that him and Dean were staying in for the next few days while they figured out where they should head next. The wooden chair at the small table was far too small for him and was creaking under his weight. He tried not to be offended by the chair’s protests as he adjusted his position so he wouldn’t break the chair eventually. His laptop sat open in front of him, and he typed away, researching for anything suspicious that he and Dean could tackle next. There was always something there, he just had to know what to look for. Sam had just finished practically writing an essay on poltergeists that he saved on his hard drive in case they ever ran into another one. It didn’t hurt to have a store of information on all the different monsters they could end up trying to rid the world of. Sam’s stomach rumbled and his attention was brought back to his hunger. He wondered when Dean would be back with food. Probably never. Cas had been interested in cheeseburgers lately and Dean had been trying to introduce the angel to the wonderful world of junk food. Sam had asked Dean to bring him a salad back, but he doubted his brother would come through. He leaned back in the wooden chair, stretching as he put his hands behind his head. He ignored the chair’s protests and sighed, sitting back up again. Suddenly, he heard a light knock at the door, and he moved to grab the gun lying beside his bed. He relaxed slightly when he heard the familiar voice of Ruby, the demon. He was glad Dean wasn’t here, because the two of them had never gotten along. He opened the door to reveal her leaning against the frame. “Ruby,” he greeted her, still holding onto his gun.
"Sam," she responded, a teasing expression on her features as she cocked her head to the side. She spotted the gun in his hands and she rolled her eyes. "The gun's not necessary," she added. Ruby straightened up before she spoke again. "Can I come in?" the girl asked, raising an eyebrow. She tucked a few of her dark curls behind her ear, keeping it out of her eyes. She quickly scanned her surroundings, simply checking out the area quickly. It was close to the interstate, just a few thousands yards back with the beginnings of a forest surrounding it. A gust of wind blew, scatterings of leaves flying with it. The stars were starting to come out, one by one. They moon was lit brightly and cast bright light to things below. She bit the inside of her lip gently, putting her attention back on the boy in front of her.
"Damn, you're tall," she muttered, wrinkling her nose. She literally had to look up at him. She rested a hand on her hip, a slight devilish glint in her eyes that always managed to appear. She then cut her eyes down to the threshold of the door, seeing if they had salt across it. It was a habit of her's. That was something she disliked about being a demon -- aside from all of the hunters who would send your ass to hell if you crossed them -- was that salt stopped you from going into places and such like that. Then there was Holy Water but that was a different story. She shook her head almost inaudibly as if it were an Etch-A-Sketch and would erase her thoughts. She re-crossed her arms as another gust blew.Â

After speaking with Sam, Ruby set her phone down and stood up. It was early Monday night and he agreed to meet up with her. She pushed the chair back towards the desk, grabbing her phone and keys as she did so. Before pulling on her black leather jacket, she slid her phone into the back pocket of her jeans and spun the key ring around her index finger. She then left her hotel room, stepping out into the long corridor. The door shut with a satisfying click, and the brunette was down the hall and out of the lobby. The cool winter air enveloped her as she walked through the small blacktop parking lot. She found the car she had been using -- not that she really needed it -- and got into the driver's side, putting the keys in the ignition and starting the car.
Her thoughts were on multiple subjects, one of which being the thought that the other Winchester boy, Dean, wouldn't think twice about shooting her on sight. Dean wasn't fond of demons, she knew that. She wasn't exactly in his fanclub, either. She flipped the radio on to some random station, though for the most part she tuned it out. She drove mindlessly, following the directions she was given. After about ten minutes of driving, she found the motel he had given her the name of. She found a parking spot and then exited her car. Her long strides took her to the door of their room smoothly, and once there she knocked twice lightly. "Guess who," she sing-songed, a half smirk on her features. The petite girl leaned against the doorframe with her arms crossed as she waited for the door to open.
I'm bored out of my mind.
Yeah just the usual. Hunting is always eventful.
I’m sure. What job have you been working on?
Just an annoying poltergeist. Easy stuff.
I see. So, raised any hell lately?
I'm bored out of my mind.

I'm sure. What job have you been working on?
I'm bored out of my mind.
Good to hear. How about your brother?Â
He’s fine too. What have you been up to?
Oh, nothing really, I've just been around. And you? I'm guessing hunting must be more eventful than what I've been doing.
