Jersey Boys Adelaide

The Jersey Boys is in Adelaide performing at the Festival Theatre and this musical lover was lucky enough to attend. I have very strong connections with New Jersey but unfortunately not so much with this musical. Were my expectations too high? I adore Frankie Valli. Any guy that can sing so high post puberty commands my attention. And I have a deep seated love for New Jersey. So what happened? I decided not to hold the painfully wrong Jersey accents against the cast (with the exception perhaps of the actor playing Joe Pesci). They were a Canadian and three Aussies after all. And I didn’t hold it against the producers that more money seemed to be spent on the suits than the sets. Something, however, was missing from the first. What was with the hip hop meets Latino singers? I get the point being made but was it necessary?! Almost all my favourite songs were sung in the first Act - and sung well, mind you - but that was the part of the show that left me confused. I couldn’t put my finger on why I wasn’t connecting with this musical. Did they try to cram too much into that first Act? Extra scenes were given to storylines that didn’t seem an integral part of the overall story. Was it the songs? Having the lights go down in the middle of a song while the cast/crew rearranged the set is disconcerting but they were sung well regardless. The cast performed their lines well and the songs were fantastic. Giving the illusion that the audience is backstage while the Four Seasons were performing to their ‘real audience’ was, I thought, a stroke of genius as was each member (each season as I like to call them) telling their side of the story. But do not get me started on the overly hammed, Bob Downe-type record producer, he made me feel like i was watching an uncomfortable stereotype although the baby boomers in the audience found him hilarious - coincidence? Intermission eavesdropping told me I wasn’t alone in feeling unsettled (“it’s taking a while to get going, I hope it gets better” was heard more than once). And then the second Act began. This was what I had come to see! The story lines were better written, the jokes, which had been just as funny technically in the first Act seemed funnier and the musical numbers had me moving in my seat even though they were songs I didn’t know as well (with the exception of course of Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You - one of my all time favourites and sung well). Something happened that made me glad I went in the end. Perhaps during the intermission I lowered my too high expectations and the show seemed better. Maybe a different person wrote the second Act. Maybe I’m a fussy PITA. Prior to going to the show I was told by numerous friends and acquaintances that it was the best musical they’d seen (I’m assuming they haven’t seen Wicked, Miss Saigon, Hairspray or Dusty, to name a few, this IS Adelaide, after all) so I’ve decided my expectations were too high as I couldn’t pick out exactly what I didn’t like about the show and I’ll go by the second Act, which as I said was brilliant. Go see it Adelaide - make up your own mind and tell me I’m nuts or I’m spot on but have an opinion. At least you won’t be wondering.

Join Gary and Jessie for 70 minutes of laughter, audience involvement and one liners (delivered as though for the first time) as they zoom through the seven Harry Potter books (yes, math nerds, that’s 10 minutes a book). Parents this is the perfect show to take your Harry Potter-crazy minis to. Who knows? They might be lucky enough to catch the golden snitch!
