Hamda Al Fahim Fall/Winter 2016 Ready-to-Wear
Cat smiled–the Queen was magnificent. Cat never dreamt of being the Queen or even a queen, but as Cat talked with Queen Rhaella, all she wished for was to be like Rhaella Targaryen. She’s strong, she’s smart, she’s fierce, she’s gentle, she’s kind, she’s everything every lady should strive to be. Cat just found a new role model and looked at the Queen admiringly. How lucky Princess Daenerys is to have a mother like this, no wonder the princess is so charming.
“Not as pleasant as your company is, your grace. I am afraid my mother died when I was very young, but I will pass on your compliments to my father–he did an excellent job raising me.”
“All of Westeros only wishes good fortune to your children,” Cat said sincerely. “I am lucky to say that I am, and I have only heard marvelous things about the celebrations. I am very excited about all the festivities, as I am sure you, your grace, must be as well.”
♔
Rhaella hoped that she hid her surprise well at the girl's words, the Queen’s fingers unintentionally clenching into fists where they rested against the front of her skirts. She had thought she had grown used to being uninformed and separated from the whispers and the news of court since her dear husband believed the only possible answer to her miscarriages was to lock the woman in her room for months, years. But standing here, in front of this sweet northern girl who merely corrected her knowledge without taking offence, made Rhaella realize how uninformed she was.
But this was ridiculous, it was cruel, and now she had made a fool out of herself while probably hurting one of their treasured guests. Aerys would probably mock her once he discovered what she had said to the fish maiden.
She wanted to b u r n him.
“My apologies,” she said tersely, forcing her fingers to uncurl and smooth across the silk of her dress. The smile she offers is pained. “I was very... sick before I gave birth to Viserys and Daenerys, and my husband is very protective. He didn’t feel there was a need to worry me with such sad news. When I see your father, I’ll be sure to offer both my condolences and my congratulations.”
“I’m very excited for the festivities, though, and I do hope that you are impressed by them. My husband has a lot planned, and thought it was necessary to decorate every inch of the keep. Have you explored it yet?”

If you asked the Queen-Mother her opinion on how her day fared, she would have told you that she was rather impressed by her own ability not to mutter in irritation throughout the entire performance put on by The Travelling Buffoons. Maybe she was getting old, or maybe she had been deprived from fun and laughter for so long that she had forgotten the warm embrace of happiness, but Rhaella failed to see the appeal in any of this-- this performance. If that was what one would call it.
First of all, both she, her dear children and their highborn guests, had been forced to sit on hard wooden benches in the middle of the city in the chilly autumn weather, with commoners and whores alike sitting mere metres from them, before having to sit through three hours of stiff acting. Now, Rhaella wasn’t usually so spiteful towards the people, they were their people, after all, but there was something unsettling in how the poor and the whores crouched in the snow, bodies half bare with mottled bruises spreading across fair skin, young children and bastards chattering away to them as if there was nothing unusual. It made Rhaella feel sick.
She wanted to go back to her chambers.
She didn’t though, instead sitting through the entire performance with a thunderous expression as her family's history was presented as a comedic love story. She couldn’t leave without arousing her Dear Aerys destructive anger however, she was a doting wife after all, but as soon as the men and women on stage took their final bows, the Queen was on her feet, bowing her head respectfully before stroking her hand through her daughter's hair fondly. She then turned and walked away in a flurry of silks. There’s a reason, she thought bitterly as she finally reached the great hall, warm from the lit fires with tables overflowing with fine wine and freshly hunted meats, that travelling performers weren’t endorsed before now. What an insult.
Her husband arrived not long after she had, saying nothing to her, but she hadn’t expected him to. She and Aerys rarely spoke these days, but Rhaella found herself glad for small mercies such as these. She believed herself awfully untactful as she grew older, and it was only a matter of time before her tongue slipped and she told the brute to die.
Now that would be extremely embarrassing.
Rhaella found herself so untrustworthy, that she grabbed a glass of wine to distract herself as she stood by the head table, beside her sweet Aerys whom wore a smile as false as her own, prepared to greet their i n v i t e d guests back in as their night of entertainment continued.
The Dragon Queen only hoped these young Lords knew to control their alcohol intake before His Grace.
☼
It was strange to be standing in the place where her own mother had once stood more than a decade ago. Yet there was nothing familiar about this meeting. A Mad King sat upon the same throne that his ancestors before him had once occupied and the Targaryen who greeted her now was not the same Princess who had cooed upon Ariella’s newborn babe, but instead a Queen.
Elia could remember little from her last visit to the Capitol, for she had only been in the world for nine moons before her mother, the Princess of Dorne, had been summoned to court to present her new daughter before her friend and future queen. Her mother had already done her duty as Princess Rhaella’s handmaiden five years before Elia’s birth. It had been a happier time then, or so her mother had said. The War of the Ninepenny Kings had yet to be seen as a threat, the royal family had still been reeling from the joy the Prince’s birth had brought them, and the Mad King Aerys had yet to ascend.
Now, there was to be another wedding in the Capital between two Targaryen siblings and another Princess of Dorne stood in front of the royal family in attendance. The world did work in mysterious ways sometimes after all.
As she curtsied politely in response to the woman’s kind offer of personal assistance, Elia could see the kind girl her mother had spoke of so often in the beautiful Queen whom she both admired and found herself intimidated by.
“Thank you for your warm reception and hospitality, Your Grace. My mother has always spoken a great deal of your kindness. It is both an honour and a pleasure to bear witness to such a joyous event.”
Elia wasn’t quite sure that ‘joyous’ was how she would describe the union of two siblings. Time and time again, the realm bore witness to the blood of the dragon marrying each other and nobody blinked an eye in public. However, Elia’s words were not entirely false. Her mother had indeed said such wonderful things about her dear friend for as long as Elia could remember and she was proud to say that her mother’s kind words were not proven to be false.
♔
It, admittedly, took the Queen a while to recognize the Dornish Princess before her, Rhaella being almost in a trace. Smile, nod, listen to her guests pointless babble, next. The act was a familiar one to her, Rhaella having had done it countless times in the years of her brother-husbands rule. It was the girl's words, her ‘my mother’, that caught her attention however, the Dragon Queen blinking twice down at the girl as she curtsied, her head tilting curiously. The girls features, so similar to those she had grown up with, have her breath catching, and she stares at the other in shocked silence for a moment.
Before she beams.
“A Dornish Princess, in my presence again; it truly is a joyous day.” The Queen croons, stepping forward to pull the girl into an embrace, lips pressing a kiss to her cheek. “It’s been too long, young Princess. I think the last time I saw you, you were an unruly child, running through my halls as your mother returned to your home lands with you by her side.” Rhaella steps back then, but her hands remain on the others shoulders. She eyes the girl up and down.
There’s a nostalgic feeling in the Queen as she looks over the other, features similar to her mother's, kindness and gentleness reflecting in her eyes as she greets Rhaella. She still remembers and treasures the times where Ariella had sat with her and Joanna, braiding the young Princesses hair and teaching the younger women the requirements they would face in life. She even treasures the times where the older woman would sit with her and hush her through her sobs, fingers gentle as she wiped the blood from her thighs and from her body, reassuring her that it would get better, that Rhaella was strong.
She hadn’t felt strong since her dear mentor had left her.
“Thank you for your words, Elia. Maybe soon we will be able to experience a similar joyous day featuring yourself? But, speaking of your mother, how is she? I heard that her illness has worsened over the last few moons, but I have not had... time to visit her.”
Cat smiled shyly at the Queen. The Queen’s warm and sincere smile reminded her of her own lady mother. Cat did not remember much, she was so young when her mother died giving birth to Edmure. And sure, Cat was close with her lord father and grew closer especially when she had to take over her mother’s role, but it was her mother that truly taught Cat the first of the Tully words: family.
Her mother had walked into her room while her septa was brushing her hair. Her mother insisted on brushing young Cat’s hair herself, showing Cat how to properly brush it if she were ever by herself. Her mother’s hands felt soft against the nape of her neck, and once she finished smoothly untangling all of young Cat’s sweet auburn hair, she brought little Cat to her lap for a close cuddle. Cat remembers her little fingers twirling her mother’s own soft hair while her mother’s soft hands brushed her cheek. She felt warm and protected and loved and knew then why the first of the Tully words were “family”–because family gives you love that feels like this.
Thinking of her mother, Cat did not feel as intimidated by the Queen, but knew she still had to use as much respect and courtesy as she could muster; she was the Queen after all, not her mother.
“Yes, my lord father, sister Lysa, and brother Edmure are all here as well, your Grace. And King’s Landing is a welcome change, your Grace, for you are right, being farther south is warmer in comparison to Riverrun right now. Though I do hope spring arrives before your children’s wedding; I hear it’s good fortune to have warm weddings.” Cat said graciously.
♔
Rhaella was oddly pleased by this girls act; confident yet respectful, placid but with a flare of strength behind those dark eyes of hers. It was a look that reminded the Dragon Queen of herself when she was younger, laying in the bed of Bonifer Hasty and regarding her brother as nothing more than an annoying pest.
Oh, how far she had fallen since those times. And now she is again falling further, standing in front of a young lady and attempting to re imagine her life through the girl's eyes. She could hear her husband’s bitter laughter echoing in her head just at the thought of it.
She smiles.
“Oh really? The whole family? How delightful! What a shame it is that I’ve only managed to speak to you, sweet one, but I must say that your company is extremely pleasant, so I cannot complain too much. Remind me to congratulate your dear mother on her success with raising you.” The Queen’s smile then becomes more fond at the others words, the woman reaching out to pat the girl's shoulder.
“I hold your words very dear to me, sweet one, and shall treasure your prayer and make my own to travel hand-in-hand with it to the Gods. I wish nothing more than good fortune on my children. Will you be joining us for the duration of the celebrations?”
Another smile – but this one was brittle and laced with caution around the edges. Lyanna didn’t know what it was, but something about Rhaella Targaryen unnerved her in ways she usually would not allow herself to be. This is what it’s like to be Queen, the wolf-maid reflected, and wondered how any woman could want the honour if it meant living only for the purpose of serving guests. She supposed it was but something to say, polite words for polite conversation. Surely there was more to being Queen than just having an unlimited supply of patience and hospitality, but she also suspected that the uttered words were in direct contradiction with the Queen’s actual feelings. If so, Lyanna could not possibly blame her. It was a sorry situation for anyone to be stuck in, and to have to pretend that it was your life’s vocation is undoubtedly the worst.
“My brothers are well, Your Grace. It is very gracious of you to inquire after them. They are here in the capital as well and just as eager to let you know their thanks. We have been so well-received since we arrived here at King’s Landing, and House Stark could not be more grateful to you and to the grace of our King.”
Even as she said the words, Lyanna had to fight the urge to look behind her and scan the faces of the rest of the Queen’s visitors. Surely one of her brothers would be there to help her out of this situation, but no one approached them thus far, and the only presence she felt was that of her handmaid. “They must have been so taken by the city,” she explained, her heart fluttering anxiously inside her ribcage. “It’s so different from the frozen lands of the North, and I know Benjen especially would’ve been so dearly curious of everything the Capital has to offer.”
♔
The girl was showing her emotions too readily, revealing to the Queen her nervousness without even a thought to the consequences. Rhaella, for a moment, considered whether or not this was a little act by the Wolf Cub, designed to inflict sympathy upon her listeners, but the Dragon-Queen knew people.
She understood them.
Her sweet brother-husband liked to force himself on top, crush both friends and enemies under his boot until they surrendered to him; he was a similar person to the Baratheon clan, all as wild as the beasts upon their flags. They liked to use sticks. The Wolves on the other hand, the noble Starks, enjoyed the art of the carrot; luring supporters in with kind gestures and false smiles, promising their followers the world and preaching of justice so they sacrificed themselves wholly to the cause. It was a technique the Dragon Queen favoured herself, actually, but this little girl was uninstructed in the ways. Any falseness in her smile was over ridden with nervousness, her eyes flicking around the room the search for a hero.
Rhaella’s inner dragon fed on her fear.
The Queen’s hand reaches out and gently rests on the girl's arm. “What a shame,” she murmurs, brows pulling together sadly. She threads her arm through the others as she speaks, impatiently waving away her own handmaiden behind her, before fixing the Wolf childs with a blank look. “That will be all for tonight, sweet ones, I think I shall show our dear Lyanna around the grounds. It appears as if her cruel brothers have left her to deal with my husbands festivities while they explore and enjoy themselves. Boys. Whatever are we to do with them?”
She gives the other no time to respond, guiding her forcefully from the hall, silk dress swirling thinly around her ankles despite the slight chill in the air as the seasons bled into one another. “I do suppose our King’s Landing is quite different in comparison to your fortresses of ice, Young One, and I bet you would just adore the gardens. Come along, let me show them to you. I don’t suppose you can grow any flowers near your home.”

❝To all the m e n, w o m e n, and c h i l d r e n of the Seven Kingdoms
Come one, come all to witness a spectacle unlike any other~❞
To celebrate the union of his beloved children, Crown Prince Rhaegar and Princess Daenerys Targaryen, our generous King Aerys has allowed the famous travelling theatre troupe from Essos, The Travelling Kingsmen, to perform for the royal family and their dearest guests.
Aside from the puppet shows the commonfolk have been known to enjoy in the streets, this will be the first live theatrical show to be rehearsed and subsequently performed by people in costumes, within the Realm and only to ever have been endorsed by the King himself. The show shall tell the tale of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, and how the three built an empire out of chaos.
The show shall be performed within the courtyard of the Red Keep. To mark this historical event the Crown invites its guests, nobles, commonfolk, bastards, and whores alike to witness the show. Nobility will be seated in the upper level seats, protected from the carpet of snow that sits upon the ground, while other guests are welcome to stand in the grounds for the duration of the performance.
King’s Landing shall unite to bear witness to a spectacle unlike any ever seen before!

Lyanna executed a deep bow, careful not to trip amidst all the silk surrounding her feet. The first time she set her eyes on the Queen, all she could do was stare with her mouth hanging partly open. Rhaella Targaryen was a beautiful woman without a shadow of a doubt, but it was a dangerous sort of beauty she emanated, and Lyanna suspected she was not the kind of person you’d like to trifle with.
Despite the sharply intimidating looks, her grace’s words were undoubtedly full of warm welcome. Whether it was real or not the wolf-maid could not bring herself to be entirely sure, but she paid her respect nonetheless, because she was representing her House. Lyanna offered the Queen a polite, mildly nervous smile and was struck once again by the force of her beauty. It was even more pronounced up close, which she was not at all surprised to find out.
“It is a pleasure to be here for such an occasion, Your Grace. Thank you for your kindness and warm reception.”
♔
It was difficult to hold back laughter as she watched the girl before her bow in greeting, and Rhaella was grateful to her dear father for teaching her such valuable lessons such as developing a mask during her childhood. It was immediately apparent to the Queen that this girl was not as practiced with formal clothing as a girl her age should be, every movement carefully planned before execution. The girl had done nothing wrong, no, but when every movement was purposely slow, it allowed a lack of training and nervousness shine through her expression.
The northern Wolves had offered her a poor excuse for a lady.
But, regardless of her thoughts, Rhaella was mildly impressed by the little that she saw. Beauty that surpassed the girls young years, a wildness that burned behind those expressionative eyes, key basics in training. It was a shame that the Wolves were so protective of their young; the girl would make a fine friend for Daenerys.
“Do not thank me for the little things, my dear, I only live to serve my guests. I was hoping to see your family also, but unfortunately, I haven’t seen them. How are your brothers?”
Queen Rhaella looked intimidating. Her beautifully-white blonde hair was styled perfectly and her violet eyes shined in the light. Catelyn touched her auburn curls again to make sure they were still neat and in place; even though she was considered beautiful, no one could be beautiful standing next to the Queen. Cat nervously approached the queen to thank her for hosting the celebrations. As she stood in line behind a few other noblemen, she glanced around to see what others were doing. Ladies were whispering and men were cheering and although she came with her sister and father, for a moment, Cat felt completely alone. I do not know anyone here. Who’s a friend? Who’s an enemy? Do I have enemies? She looked back to see the lord in front of her finish kissing the Queen’s hand, then take his exit to pour himself more wine. Slowly, Cat approached the Queen with an anxious half-smile; her face always gave away her true emotions, no matter how she tried to hide it.
“Thank you for attending our celebrations. We hope you enjoy your stay with us, and please let our servants know if you need anything, my sweet child. I would also be willing to help you with anything you need.” The Queen said pleasantly.
“Thank you for your kindness and hospitality, your Grace,” Catelyn said nervously as she curtsied.
♔
Although she had tried to keep her smile welcoming throughout her rounds of the guests, Rhaella couldn’t help but to think that her expression was becoming forced, especially with the power of her brother-husband radiating around the room. She was silently glad when a blundering fool of a lord sauntered off in the search for more wine, the Queen’s shoulders visibly relaxing as he left.
It was as if she was an animal, she remarked to herself, being paraded around like a trophy and having to smile for these idiotic men with more power than sense.
The next guest that approached her, however, roused her interest for the first time all night, a mothering instinct rising in her as she offered the nervous lady a genuine smile and a nod of her head. This was one of the fish girls, her mind supplied, similar in age to her sweet Daenerys.
“Of course, sweet one, please take my words sincerely,” she returned kindly. “I do hope our changing seasons aren’t too harsh on you? I was lead to believe that your Riverrun can be quite cold during this season, though, especially since winter refuses to unhand us completely. Have you attended with your entire family?”

🔥
It had been hours since he had begun circling around the great hall; a forced smile a permanent fixture on his lips as he asked after people he did not know and laughing over jests that were scarcely humorous. His gaze, however, kept drifting back to where his father remained seated on the throne; his voice booming through the room, curving around people and reverberating against the ceilings, leaving the distinct aftertaste of madness in the air. Rhaegar could see people shifting uneasily, cataloguing the king’s offhand remarks and biting tone.
The people deserve better, he thought bitterly to himself, trying to rid himself of the thought with the shake of his head. Mother deserves better. He had once loved his father, he was sure of it. Once, when their lives had been filled with laughter; when things had been easier. But those memories were tainted, stained with purpling bruises and bouts of savagery. Rhaegar could stand next to the man and not waver, not lunge forth and accuse the man of destroying everything he should have held dear. Now was not the time, though. Now was the time to speak of wedding preparations; of the end of winter and the dawn of spring.
The nobles would not mention of dissent over salt and bread, and the royals would smile brittle smiles.
“Thank you for you presence, my lord,” he said graciously to a lesser lord from the Stormlands, repeating the same line he had been all day. The man had visited once before - if Rhaegar’s memory served; with sons in tow who had jeered at his bookishness behind his back. “I trust your stay will be enjoyable - ” Catching sight of his mother, he ducked his head in silent apology. “ - if you’ll excuse me.”
Striding across the gleaming floors, pausing to nod pleasantly at guests, Rhaegar came up next to the Queen, a genuine smile finding its way to his face. “Lady mother,” he began, voice loud enough to travel before dropping lower. “I don’t remember inviting this many people.” It was as if the entire realm had turned up at their doorstep, niceties in hand. The wedding was being touted as a joyous occasion, but there was an undercurrent of something else sitting right below. “Are you alright?”
♔
The queen wasn’t sure how long she stood there, listening to the pointless babbling of their young guests, her smile pleasant and encouraging despite her irritation. The woman had long learnt to smother her inner dragon, the scent of fire and burning haunting her more that comforting her, and the echo of her dear husbands voice around the room had her tensing. He had done this on purpose, her bitter thoughts whispered as she nodded at whatever meaningless information a young lady was giving her about her home lands. Aerys was mocking both their enemies, and their family, with these pointless celebrations. Rhaella could feel herself becoming more and more worked up as her thoughts goaded and teased her, her fingers clenching and unclenching restlessly as she passed from guest to guest with ready smiles. The only thing that saved her from snapping, from asking herself if she was the mad one for being so irritated and uncomfortable in this crowded hall, was the sight of her eldest son weaving through the crowd towards her.
The feeling she had at the sight of him was similar to that of breathing a breath of fresh air for the first time in years, and as she excused herself from her conversation, she gave the boy a genuine smile.
The people deserve better, she thought. The people deserve Rhaegar.
“Sweet child,” she returned to his greeting, reaching up and cupping his face so she could brush a kiss across his cheek. “Your father thinks he’s funny, and obviously believed my council to be unworthy of his time. I did suggest he only invited the... important families to hear our announcement.” As she spoke, her voice had became haughty, and it takes everything in her not to sneer. She tucks her hand into the crook of his elbow instead. “Will you walk outside with your mother? I’m afraid I need some fresh air.”
♔
There were strangers in the palace.
Now, it wasn’t exceptionally odd for strangers to be in the palace, Rhaella’s dear husband frequently playing host to numerous strangers every week; from enemies to allies, from war heroes to coin counters, but It was the nature and the birthright of these strangers that put the Queen on edge. Following the announcement of the marriage between her sweet children, Lords and Ladies had flocked to her Red Keep, bringing their squabbling brats with them. Queen Rhaella had no pity for her husband, no love, and a small part of her wished that her husbands enemies would poison his wine as they dined together, laughing joyfully as if they weren’t attempting to spill one another's innards only years before. Enemies of her son, however, could not be forgiven, and these lords and ladies, half of them dressed in their thick hoods and warm dresses due to the changing weathers, while she wore nothing but thin silks, her dragons blood keeping her body warm. were here only to gain a strong social standing through her children, or to sabotage the Targaryen line. She knew all this through her sweet husband, who enjoyed to talk during his vicious taking of her body.
She trusted none of them.
Although she wanted nothing more than to throw them out, however, Rhaella knew her place within this family, and she knew the insanity of her husband. So her smile remained pleasant as she glided through the castle's corridors, holding out her hand and allowing these Northerners and cross breeders to kiss the back of her hand.
“Thank you for attending our celebrations. We hope you enjoy your stay with us, and please let our servants know if you need anything, my sweet child. I would also be willing to help you with anything you need.”
Rhaella Targaryen, Queen of Westeros, 36, Played by Charlize Theron, Taken
Rhaella Targaryen is the second child and only daughter born to the late King Jaehaerys II Targaryen and his sister-wife, Shaera. The very epitome of a princess, in her youth many songs had been written about the Targaryen Princess’s beauty, flawless manners, and good heart. As a girl Rhaella had never been known to step out of line. Although her love for Ser Bonnifer Hasty, who had once named her the Queen of Love and Beauty, had been a well known secret among the Red Keep, the affair had been a brief thing as the young landed knight from the Stormlands was of too low birth to ever be seriously considered a suitor for a Princess. Thus, the short courtship had never stained the Princess’s flawless reputation. By all accounts a once lively and lovely woman, as the sister-wife and Queen of Aerys Targaryen the years have not been kind to Rhaella. Although the beauty and kindness remain, the spark that once defined the Queen is said to have extinguished the day she had been married to her elder brother.
Aerys and Rhaella had never been neither the closest nor the most loving of siblings. Thus, the marriage had never been something either sibling wanted, but it had been arranged at the command of their father after King Jaehaerys had been influenced by a woods witch. She had prophesied that the Prince that was Promised would be born from Aerys and Rhaella’s line. Although Aerys himself also believed in the woods witch’s words, there was no affection between Rhaella and Aerys, a fact that was all too apparent on their wedding day to those witnessing it. At the beginning of their marriage, Aerys had always been rather indifferent towards his sister-wife rather than abusive. She gave birth to their first son early in the marriage, but it was an event marred by death, destruction and tragedy. Rhaegar was born in Summerhall whilst the famed tragedy raged on, decimating the Targaryen line. While there was no fondness between the siblings, Rhaella was always mindful of her duty as wife and Queen Mother however. Going so far as to subject herself to her husband’s brutality without a whisper of complaint as his madness grew.
Rhaella was a proud woman, but a woman nonetheless, and she had desperate hopes of producing heirs strong enough to rear their dragon heads, and rain fire down upon their enemies. The prophecy of the Prince that was Promised echoing through her head as she birthed her first son, Rhaegar, who would fulfill his duty or birth a child of his own to do so. However, the Queen’s luck ran thin after Rhaegar was born, the Gods snatching seven children from her as she tried to produce her son and her husband a princess. With every child that died, Rhaella’s hope diminished, and Aerys’s insanity increased, as well as the Queen’s screams echoing down the hallways as she was beaten or isolated. Her second son, Viserys, was a blessing, and her only daughter, Daenerys was a miracle. Especially since both survived until adulthood. While the births of her son and daughter eased the King’s paranoia, ensuring that a Targaryen line of succession would continue, the abuse inflicted upon his Queen did not wane. But Rhaella must stay strong for her children , as there is unease in Westeros despite the announcement of a royal wedding.
Traits:
(+) intelligent, kind, strong
(-) prideful, timid, tolerant
Connections:
Aerys Targaryen: Rhaella and Aerys have been married since they have come of age, despite the fact that they barely get along. While at first, Aerys had comforted Rhaella in her grief, the multiple stillbirths, miscarriages and dead children eventually caused Aerys to become suspicious of her. He accused her of being unfaithful and claimed that the dead children had been bastards. Aerys had Rhaella confined to Maegor’s Holdfast and had decreed that two septas would sleep in Rhaella’s bed every night, to ensure she would remain faithful. The death of Prince Jaehaerys shifted his suspicion to others and finally himself, after which he declared that he would only sleep with Rhaella and thereby ceased to have mistresses. In the later years of their marriage, as Aerys’s insanity began to set in, he grew sexually abusive towards Rhaella as he developed a sexual fetish for fire and death, only sleeping with Rhaella after he had executed someone by burning them. Rhaella tries to avoid her husband as best as she can, but knows that she has a duty to serve him as wife and Queen, standing by his side silently during royal functions, and accepting his violent tendencies in bed.
Rhaegar, Viserys, and Daenerys Targaryen: Rhaella adores all three of her surviving children as they do her. Even though she wasn’t allowed per Aerys’s degree to see Viserys and Daenerys for their first six namedays due to her husband’s paranoia, Rhaella does her best to make up for lost time. With Daenerys in particular she spends every moment she has free with the girl, teaching her the lessons she will need to be a married woman, and telling her stories of the Prince that was Promised. During their childhood, Rhaella did her best to protect all three children from the worst of Aerys’s excesses, keeping them oblivious to the fact that their father was sliding deeper into madness. However, as Rhaegar and Viserys in particular grew older, they began to understand what their mother’s bruises and silence meant. While all three children respect their father as the king, Viserys in particular has developed an unbreakable loyalty towards his mother and would not hesitate to commit treason should it mean keeping Rhaella safe from Aerys.
Ariella Martell: Rhaella and Ariella met when the already grown woman became the young Princess Rhaella’s handmaiden, and quickly became close friends due to the close nature of Ariella’s job, especially as Aerys’s brutual nature developed. Due to their age difference, in Rhaella’s youth Ariella had often fulfilled the role of a mentor towards Rhaella and Joanna Lannister. As Rhaella became Queen, the girl took several pointers from how her dear friend ruled Dorne and was determined to become just as much of a beloved ruler. Ariella has had to clean up the crowned Queen on many occasions, but Rhaella is determined to keep their relationship light and refuses to talk about her husband’s insanity with the other.
