Hi Brian, I just wanted to say that this blog is incredible and has been so much help! You're an angel thank you so much for doing this xox
are we allowed to bring a hot water cooker? i don't know what it's specifically called, but basically something you plug in and pour in water and then it heats it up for you. also, are we allowed to bring mirrors to hang? i know there are specific rules about hooks, but just the mirror itself, is that allowed? how about a clothing rack? i saw the rack on the nyu housing booklet so i assumed it was okay i mean it was in the picture
I'm so sorry for taking so long, I haven't had wifi over the last couple days. All of these are completely okay, but if you want to hang anything you need putty/hooks that won't damage the walls. Look for 3M brand and similar.
do you work for nyu or are you going to be a freshman?
While I do now have a job in Bobst, I am an incoming freshman!
you have been a huge help and have made this process so much easier. i can't wait to meet you next week. thank you for all your work and stay amazing. (:
thank you.
Just a little heads up that I'm beginning my move to the city in a matter of hours and will have very limited availability over the next for days. I'll check the blog from my phone every now and then, but please don't wait too long for an answer, I may not get to it until Monday.
Hi Brian, are we allowed to bring small rice cookers if we don't live in an apartment style dorm?
Sadly, rice cookers are not allowed in any type of dorm. This falls under the same rule forbidding coffee machines, hotplates, candles, and incense.
Hey, if we cash, where do we keep it? Not to hate on my roommates or anything. Also, where can we keep documents such as passports etc?
This is completely up to you. If you have large amounts and you don't want to put it in a bank, invest in a small safe. You can throw any important papers in there with it.
What are some of the used bookstores in NYC that have textbooks?
Most used bookstores will sell used textbooks. Just do a search for used book stores in the city and call and ask if they have your book in stock. One I know of is Strand at 828 Broadway. My high school theatre teach loved this store and went every time she was in the city.
Hey! Thanks for the awesome links. Does the site bookfinder actually have the textbooks and does it have viruses? I found a couple of textbooks but i'm scared to download them.
I haven't had any issues with any of the sites. If you have an antivirus you can have it run the file, but so far I haven't experienced any bad or heard of any.
Should we get our textbooks now or wait until the first class and see what the professors say we need for the course?
This is completely up to you. I have a lot of my books already, but only because I spent almost no money on them. If you're going to be forking out a couple hundred, wait until the professor tells you. If you'll be spending less than $50 like I did, no harm in getting them now. That is, if they'll be delivered in time for your move.
Hey Brian, I have a very specific question, like the coffee machine one. Are we allowed to have Hot Pots? I know we aren't allowed to have open coil devices, but I don't know what this is considered. I am seriously addicted to tea and will probably die without one. :D
Yes! Electric kettles such as this are completely legal (and my first purchase when I get to the city to help fuel my tea addiction).
Hi Brian! I noticed on CareerNet that some positions have cover letter "required," and others have it under "additional documents". Would it matter if I didn't submit a cover letter for these positions, or is it more of a "recommended" thing? Thanks!
If there's a space for one, put it. Even if it's not required, it's highly recommended. It's how they get to know you at first.
If I am an in a suite with two bedrooms in Third North, does it matter which bedroom I am in? Like can I just choose when I get there (assuming I get there first?)
If there is not an assigned room on your housing assignment, I'd assume so. Contact your residence hall manager to double check.
Are there rooms with bunk beds in Third North?
I'm unsure, but from what I have been told most triples have a bunk bed.
You can easily unbunk them by removing a couple screws, but you should talk to your RA and residence hall manager prior to doing so.
Hey Brian! First off, thanks for being so helpful over the past few months. Anyway, I have a somewhat trivial question to ask, and maybe this has been answered before, but what's the deal on coffeemakers in dorms? I saw something about Keurigs a while back on the FB page, but I don't know if a regular maker is allowed (under the open-top burn thing), or if even Keurigs are allowed. I'm a self-admitted coffee addict, and any info you have would be much appreciated. Thanks again!
I know for sure that the regular coffee maker is not allowed. I'm not sure about Keurigs (and similar), but I don't see them being a problem as they don't have a hot plate.
I know for sure that you can use an electric kettle and french press.
The third north address also includes the student Tower and room number, e.g. 75 Third Avenue, Ts-1203
Hey y'all, over the next few days I'm going to be out a lot and not very available, and come the 21st I'll be on my way to the city and almost completely offline to monitor the group, so if you have any questions, message me, write on my wall, or tag me in your post. With move in so close, I want to share a couple things. First, there's this wonderful guide put up by the university that includes how to check in, when to check in, and what you cannot bring with you. Find all that information here. Next, I've been getting asked a lot on mailing addresses. Above is a list with all of the addresses . Your room number is the entire number, minus the two letter coding unless you are in a building with separate towers. For example, in your housing assignment a room in Rubin on the thirteenth floor shows as RU-1333. Because there are not separate towers, you drop the RU- and only put the number. However, if your room is in Third North, you keep the first two letters so they know which tower you are in. Do NOT put "NYU", "New York University" or the name of your residence hall on the shipping label. A topic also commonly asked is when you may ship something to your dorm. Anything received before move in day will be sent back (except for those that move in early with sports teams or Project Outreach). If you feel that your package will not arrive prior to you, you may send it. For most students, I don't recommend shipping anything any sooner than the 23rd or 24th with regular, not overnight, shipping. This really depends on where you are coming from though, as certain international students can ship before because of customs and those that live too close to the city shouldn't send before the 24th just to be safe (however, if you live this close, you're probably driving to the city and bringing everything with you anyways). Check the estimate shipping times and go off of the shortest. Oh, and I REALLY hope I included all of the residence hall's addresses. I'm not entirely sure which upperclassman halls are being used as overflow. With all that said, safe travels, and I'll see you during Welcome Week!
