“Low-fat means nothing with the amount of sugar you put in,” Steve argued, trying to look serious before busting up laughing with Bucky. He looked over at him, a wide grin crossing his face. He smiled wider when Bucky took his hand, squeezing gently. “I guess so.” He looked at their hands, thinking. “It would make sense. I’m just glad we get to be together.” He realized a moment too late that that might seem a little overbearing. After a pause, he added, “I mean, I just seem to get along with you, and you’re really great to be around.”

“Well, I’d hate for you to find me a pain in the ass. Even if it’d be a lot more fun for me.” Bucky grinned over at him, the grin calling back to over a century ago, before letting his thumb rub over Steve’s knuckles lightly. As much as he didn’t want to say it, it had started getting late, and a frown passed over his face when he realised they’d have to part ways. Friday seemed like a lifetime away.

“I guess we should get goin’, sun’s starting to sink.”

“I’m Benji.” He said. He could handle that as a code name, underscore it as his number. “Like… undercover operations, long term. Understood.”

 He looked up as the Asset Bucky took him closer, and took hold of the man’s arm. At least it was a less awkward hold, and he could keep up easier. At this point, getting loss would make everything even worse than they were before. 

“You believe we’ll need to go to another country?” Seven Benji asked. He’d hate to have to hide in the luggage compartment, but he wasn’t sure if he could get a passport so quickly. “Could we walk to Canada?”

“It’s a possibility.” Anything was a possibility when they were on the run, and Benji would need to learn that very quickly. Anything that could go wrong probably would, and he needed to know how to plan for every outcome, be prepared for every eventuality. But realistically, of course.

“We’re not walking to Canada. I got out of the US and across most of Europe with no issues, I think we can get to Canada on a bus with little issue.” Again, if they needed to. But Canada was still too close for his liking; it wouldn't be difficult to extradite them back to the US if they were caught on foreign soil, and the US requested them to be brought back to face charges. Benji might be safe, but Bucky posed a much higher risk of that happening.

“I can’t be Seven anymore?” He said, disturbed by the idea. He had been number seven for so long. “Everything else, what else is there? Not understood. Not understood.” 

He sighed, crossing his arms. He knew how to walk in a crowd, identifying the walk of a pissed off teenager. He was good at undercover operations. “Where are we going?”

“No. You’re Benji, not a number. The same way I’m not the Asset anymore; I’m just Bucky.” Glancing back at him, he tugged Benji closer, not wanting to let the kid out of his immediate eyesight. If anything, they’d probably just look like a strange father-son pair, which Bucky could contend with.

“Back to my apartment. We need to make a plan, but we need somewhere safe to do it, first. And if we need to go somewhere else, go to a different country, then I can grab the few things I have and we can leave immediately.”

“I didn’t need one before.” He said. Seven stood up, brushing his pants off. He didn’t need to, but it gave him a few seconds to think. “I was Number Seven.”

He pressed his lips in a thin line. It hurt to look back too far in his life, before the training clicked into place. Things got blurry, fuzzy, and his head ached as he tried to focus. 

“Benjamin.” He said aloud. A woman in his head smiled at him. Son of Mine, ben ya min. She pet his head, saying the two interchancheably. “Benji.”

That was a start. “That’s your name now. Not Seven, not Soldier, not anything but that. If you have your name, you’ll be able to find a place to start looking for everything else.” Turning, Bucky peeked out of the alleyway, looking around before motioning for Benji to follow, stepping out onto the sidewalk right behind a small crowd of friends. Don’t get too close, but don’t stand out too much.

“Like you’re any better with the coffee,” Steve replied, rolling his eyes. Steve thought back, remembering what he could of the exhibit. “I went once,” he recalled. “I think I know what you’re talking about.” He had hung in that part for a while, watching the videos and remembering hanging out with Bucky, before the war and during. “It was the video of us, just laughing. I stayed there for a long time. It was… before I knew you were still alive.“ He paused at Bucky’s description, the distorted mirror. He laughed, but it lacked amusement. “I didn’t feel like the guy in that video, either. Not quite as different, but not the same.” He leaned into Bucky the tiniest bit, hardly noticing he was doing.“

“Hey. I get lowfat coffee.” Bucky gave a half-snort, covering his mouth with his hand as he laughed, before thinking about the video. Before now, he’d never really given much thought to the whole Captain America thing. It had been so long since that version of Steve had disappeared, that it just seemed more like a fantastical fairytale, given that the Smithsonian had begun to move the exhibit worldwide. But it was all real, and he’d been a part of that history. Both good, and bad.

Glancing over to Steve, he hesitated slightly before letting his hand slip into Steve’s, fingers curling between the blond’s. “Maybe someone decided to give us a second chance after fuckin’ with our lives so much. You don’t have to bear that weight anymore, you can do whatever you want and just...be normal. Live a truly normal life.”

“I…” Seven shrugged, helpless. He didn’t know what happened before he was wiped over and over. Logically… he could guess most people wouldn’t want to be scarred like that. It hurt. It hurt a lot. Most people didn’t want to pull triggers. He was trained not to think about things like want. 

“That’s… that’s about before…” He said. “Before training, I guess, not?”

He swallowed, taking the command in stride. He took the proffered hand, biting down on his lip. It was comforting, somehow, at least Bucky was taking charge. He could feel lost later.  “Where are we going to go?”

“I don’t know.” Where did people in their situation ever go? Away, that was all he could think of. People like them, killers, practical fugitives, they didn’t have anywhere specific to go. They just stayed moving, stayed running. And Bucky had had two years of practise already, so maybe they had a chance.

“We have to give you a name. Can you remember anything about your life before, anything at all? Even if it doesn’t make sense, maybe a name that you heard a lot?”

“I…” 

Seven bit down his teeth. He had made an assumption. It was so stupid to assume. He assumed that when he woke up, with all the others dead, something happened. An intruder came in, something, and he had been left. 

What if the Asset was right? He gaped, and his back hit the alley wall as the realization dawned on him. They had given up on their assets. He had lost his use. Had he failed them? Was he so useless to them now he was being thrown away? He shook his head, trying to think things through. Would they abandon him, if there was an intruder?

“I don’t know.”  He finally admitted. “I don’t know. I just don’t know.” 

He dropped his head now, banging his fists to his temples where they typically wiped him. He almost wished they’d wipe him now, the entire exchange burned his head. 

“I don’t remember much before Hydra, that’s… making. I don’t know much about the Five either. I remember… what they smelled like, in the rubble.” He gagged, finally lowering his hands from his temples, fingers releasing from the tight, clenched grip. “I don’t think I asked for anything.”

It was a difficult reality to try and force into the kid, and probably made him no better than what Hydra did to them all the time, but it would be with a better outcome. He hoped, anyway.

Letting the half-truth sink in, Bucky watched the kid sink down and try to reason it out, only to find that there wasn’t anything else to come to. After a moment, Bucky finally crouched down, pulling his glove off and letting the light reflect off his metal hand. “You think I’d ask for this? You think I’d ask to be made a killer, to be stuffed into a cryotube whenever they felt I wasn’t needed, to be electrocuted and made into a blank slate? Even if you don’t remember, is there anything that points to you asking for the same treatment? Why would anyone willingly want to be treated the way they treated us?”

But there was no use in mourning something currently lost. He could mourn whatever he remembered later, if that was possible; for now, Bucky stood up, proffering his hand to help the kid up as well. “C’mon. We have to go.”
