Okay longwinded sappy stupid shit- I feel like crying because I think I kind of forgot for a while about stuff I actually enjoy now that I have ✨adult responsibilities✨

I guess I’m finally feeding that inner teenager again because I went to a diy show last night and had a blast. I was nervous at first because I went alone. Once I got more comfy, I met a startup band in the crowd and talked to them and got a free wristband and little plastic rat. When I got home I looked at their Insta they’d given me and their Spotify and they’re pretty good I’d say. They’re even performing in a few weeks close by the skate park the diy show was at and I’m stoked to see them again.

Everyone was super respectful and there was a mosh pit in front of the performers, and then a little ways away in the skatepark’s basin thingy, people were also moshing. I got to join in for a bit (POTS told me to sit tf down a couple times), and I got to watch a bunch of rad people dance. A woman across from us was painting the entire time, a group was spraying graffiti, some people were also laying down to rest and looked like an album cover, there was a person smoking with a gas mask on- so much cool stuff. I was just sitting there the entire time soaking it in and so blissful because I felt like I belonged for the first time since I was a teen going to these things.

At the end of the night when the last band wrapped up, I bought a sticker from one of the bands, and I was hoping the band I liked most that night was also selling merch. So I asked one group of people if they knew where the band was selling stuff and she pointed to the table and I said no, that was only one band. She leans over to me and asks if it’s okay to shout for me and I nervously said yeah and she was like “okay, don’t be embarrassed.” And then hollered for the seller and motioned for the crowd to part for me. Literally felt like I was in a movie she was so cool for that.

The seller was one of the band members and he told me he designed everything. I wanted both the tshirt he was selling and a copy of their ep (which is on cassette so fucking cool) but I only had like 20 bucks. He gave me both and said not to worry about it so I gave him an extra five dollars I found and thanked him. So sick hope he’s doing great.

The cassette is playing in the background as I write this and I just. I really missed being in the actual alt scene. Not the performative shit that’s been capitalized on the last decade, but like, the movement and community that alternative spaces stand for. People were allowed to clap off rhythm or fall down or bump into each other because none of us are perfect and no one really judged them.

If anything, everytime someone danced or got excited, someone else was cheering for them. Everyone was so so respectful. A total stranger watched my bag while I went and moshed and nothing was disturbed or stolen and she protected it from passing feet. People were giving out water or ensuring no one lost their keys or wristbands. Most everyone was respectful of the people coming to skateboard instead of for the music and moved for them and vice versa. Just agh I missed it so so muchhh

And for those people who have access to mobility devices but might benefit from a second chair they can abuse without risking expensive damage…

Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.

He also is working on cheap, open source, accessible designs for beach chairs, off road chairs, motorized attachments (think smart drive), and so on. Plus he skateboards in his wheelchair. Cool dude, helpful info, pass it on.

It's incredibly sad people have to resort to this, but it's a damn good resource. Use it. Spread awareness. Maybe one day people with physical disabilities won't need DIYs like this. But until then, reblog and share.

ok so this is another long shot but a few years ago there was a twitter post (in japanese i think?) that had measurememts for how to make this book stand thing out of cardboard that you could use to double up books and use up more space on shelves

back then i made a bunch of these but by now i lost the pic and dont know how to find the original post anymore

if it comes down to it i can just take one apart and get the measurements from there but i would be very grateful if anyone happens to have the original post or something similar??

don't mind how long it's been since i made this post, anyway i realized that i don't even need to take one apart to get the measurements when i can literally just unfold it and refold it /FACEPALM

so anyway here is the diagram for anyone else who is interested!!

this requires pretty big carboard pieces, if you have a really big box or something you can make it from one piece, but if you don't, you can also just make each of the pieces individually and then tape them together

and then in the end you put it together like this!!

and then when you make a bunch you can put them all next to each other and stack your books like crazy
