I Don't Need To Be Rescued || Victoria and Thomas
Smiling lightly at something Lewis said, Thomas swallowed another bite of his food. He was barely listening to the boy, as ever since Victoria caught his eye, she hadn't left it. She sat with her family, of course, and she looked a little upset. Maybe not even upset, just indifferent. Whatever, Thomas was unsure of her exact emotion, but he couldn't pull himself away from it. He thought he'd know what it was, having known her so well once upon a time, but she seemed different now.
Finding the will to tear his eyes away, mostly because of the fear of being caught, he smiled again at Lewis. Lewis had already finished and was now just making conversation. Observations. Thomas had his own something to observe though, and that something was Victoria. Lewis finally caught on to Thomas' lack of attention as Thomas looked up again. His brother sighed and looked away, making conversation with the folk across the table instead.
Thomas finished off the last of his food, and seeing as Victoria was only sitting there, not eating, he bit the inside of his cheek, feeling the urge to get up and talk to her. He stood, telling Lewis he'd see him sometime later. As he was walking around the long table, he glanced at the band, and the few couples on their feet, swaying. He grinned and made his way to Victoria's table.
Swallowing a lump in his throat, he swallowed his nerves and smiled politely at the woman's parents he hated so dearly. "Would you like to dance?" he asked Victoria, turning to her as he held a hand out. They'd only talked a few times since they got on the ship, still surprised at one another. Him, not so much. Her, completely. Her family, even more. He'd wished he'd bought A class tickets since he saw her, knowing that'd really prove his change. He knows secretly he wanted the approval of her parents, even though he'd always tell himself that he could care less about them.
I didn't pack enough books.
I know how you feel.
Time Differences || The Garrod Brothers || Prompt #1.3
Lewis had barely seen his brother on this trip aside from the times they spent in their room. Though they had come on this trip together, they barely saw each other. He enjoyed the company of the others on the ship, sure, but Lewis did miss spending time with Thomas. The two seemed to talk about little aside from business lately, and the trip was in some way a chance for the brothers to enjoy each other’s company and catch up on things they may not have come up in conversation.
Lately, Lewis had noticed something odd with his brother, but he was a bit nervous about bringing it up. It was rare when he didn’t notice when there was something up with Thomas, but he never brought it up. Usually, his elder brother would just dismiss his questioning, refusing to tell Lewis a thing about what was on his mind. Respecting his brother’s wishes, Lewis rarely asked him what was on his mind anymore when he noticed anything off. He always noticed, but the chances of him saying anything about his observations were slim to none.
Shrugging, Lewis stood and began to pace the room for a few moments. “I don’t know, I was just thinking about home. Do you think we should send a letter home? Maybe by the next time we land?" After not spending some time with his brother for weeks on the ship, he was becoming a bit curious about what the other man had been up to. “Sorry, I just can’t sleep, so, my mind’s been wandering." Often, when he was thinking nonstop, questions and musing just came pouring out, without a filter. “So, what have you been up to on the trip so far?"
Family had seemed like something that was always second to whatever else they needed to handle -- whether it be people, business, an issue of sorts, etc, -- once they'd made their lives changed, and it bothered Thomas. Although Thomas never seemed extremely family orientated, what with his indifference toward his father's death, but he loved Lewis and their mother more than they probably knew. He knew that Lewis disliked him for the way he treated the subject of his father, but he never felt as if the boy just understood. Not saying that he couldn't, but Thomas had never given him the chance. Thomas hated that it happened and it affected him a lot more than it seemed, but that's why it was never commented on by him. It made him uncomfortable, and he was more comfortable treating it as if it's a 'what happens, happens, and that's how it is' type of thing.
Thomas had always been pretty closed off though. About everything. Lewis was the closest person to Thomas, but even he didn't know everything about Thomas should that be what Thomas wants. Lewis didn't comment on Thomas' behavior if something was on his mind, and he never pushed his thoughts or feelings upon Lewis either. That's just the way it almost always had been, and he wouldn't argue against it.
Thomas watched Lewis pace back and forth, settling his arms underneath his pillow. "I mean... I guess so. Mom probably wouldn't be able to send one back though." He shrugged and stared up at their little ceiling. "I'm sure she'd enjoy the thought and being able to hear from us, though, so sure." He glanced at Lewis' face, furrowing his brows a little. "It's fine." He chuckled a little, missing the boy's rambles. Thomas sat up on one of his elbows, making a pointed face at Lewis. "I've been looking for you most of the time."
Some of the people on board are certainly..
Interesting.
Such as? Why are they so "interesting"?
Time Differences || The Garrod Brothers || Prompt #1.3
Lewis sat up in his bed, unable to sleep. Maybe it was the food he had eaten, or the alcohol he had consumed, but it was most likely the feeling of homesickness that had washed over him. Now that they were leaving their first stop, Lewis began to feel a churning in his stomach as he thought of how his mother felt with them leaving home. He felt horrible leaving the woman behind, but, after all, she was the one who declined Lewis’s invitation aboard. Staying was her decision, but it still didn’t make Lewis miss her any less. He even began to somewhat miss the town in which the Garrod family lived.
The Garrod family was not a family known for money. They had enough to survive and possibly afford a few luxuries, but in no way were they even close to being wealthy. They grew up in a small house so they could be able to afford and save more, and Lewis hardly complained because there was enough room for the three to live comfortably. Really, the only things Lewis complained about were his brother’s lack of emotion towards the death of their father and the small town he had grown up in. It was a town with very little, and young Lewis never seemed to feel occupied at any moment whilst living there. There were few kids whom he enjoyed playing with, and there weren’t many places in town for him to occupy himself at, either. Perhaps he missed the familiarity of it.
Lewis recorded these feelings, as well as a change in temperature inside the stateroom he shared with his brother, in the notepad that sat on his nightstand, before finally looking over at his brother. With Thomas’s back to him, it was hard for Lewis to tell whether his brother was asleep or not. He decided to speak quietly, so as not to disturb the other man if he did happen to be asleep. “Thomas,” he whispered, “do you ever miss home?”
Thomas stared at the wall, his lip between his teeth. It had sat there for a while and now that he'd paid attention to it, he realized he'd bitten harder and harder as the minutes passed. He rubbed it and sighed a little, taking a short and unnoticeable glance at Lewis. The boy had been jotting down whatever it is he writes in that notebook of his, and he averted his eyes back to the wall. The trip had gone by so much faster than he'd expected it to so far. It nearly seemed like they'd only been gone for a few days.
The sight of Victoria hadn't helped either. Every glance of her made time speed up by a tenfold, rather than slow down as it used to. Maybe it was the fact that she was almost avoiding him now, or maybe that he'd been shunned from seeing her that made it move so quickly. Knowing that she was on the ship with him while not being allowed to see her. Before, when he knew she had emotions as strong as steel for him, time felt as if it slowed down around her, his whole world colliding with another when he was with her. He gave a small huff as he realized he was delving too deep into the poetic side of his brain again.
He was about to force himself to fall asleep in frustration when he heard Lewis' voice. He turned a little and looked at his brother. Thomas offered a small shrug and rested his hands on his stomach. "I guess so." He thought about it a lot, but not his new home. His old home, and he knew it was Victoria's fault. Where he used to live and dream about the life he had now with the girl. He hated that seeing her on this trip made his every thought revolve around her. "Why?"
Don't worry, don't worry, everything's under control -
As well it should! I’m very good at what I do.
I wasn't... being serious.
You've actually proved to be pretty immature so far and that doesn't necessarily make me feel comfortable.
Don't worry, don't worry, everything's under control -
Your designated sexy sailmaker is here.
That makes me feel wonderful.
I swear I know you from somewhere...
No, no. From before… Were you ever in Paris?
Nope... Sorry, Miss. I haven't been anywhere outside of my hometown since the Hyperion.
I swear I know you from somewhere...
Well, we have been on the ship for a few weeks now, I'm sure we've seen each other around a couple times.
Oh, not again.
I have no idea. Bad luck, maybe?
Luck must really not like you then.
Are you a dancer? You said it was a tap shoe.
Oh, not again.
I seemed to have lost my left tap shoe. It’s always the left one.
How do you continuously lose the same shoe?
Why is it that it's always the annoying songs that get stuck in your head?
Your choice. Have fun with your song.
Why is it that it's always the annoying songs that get stuck in your head?
I’m not a brain surgeon.
I rather like my brain. I think I'll opt to keep it in, thanks.
Why is it that it's always the annoying songs that get stuck in your head?
Because your brain is trying to force you to enjoy it. Your brain hates you. Get a new brain.
And would you like to help me accomplish that?
