It was in a crowded room
Interrupted with clanging cutleries
And the low buzzing sound of midday chatter
That I heard
The distinct sound of my heart slowly breaking…
again.
I barely recognised it, but it was the same unmistakable, undeniable ache
The sort of breaking that an iceberg might feel if it could,
As its part drifts away from the whole that it was.
I grieved for a moment.
I know exactly why my heart is breaking again.
It’s a self-inflicted pain, I now admit.
It’s a necessary breaking.
Before the iceberg turns into a black hole capable of engulfing stars.
