“Please tell me you’re not going to tell me you stole drugs again because I don’t think I can handle that kind of stress,” Jane said as she followed her friend into a questionable area. “I love you dearly but you’re going to get us arrested one day. You know I’ve never even had a detention before? I have a perfectly clean record. I can’t ruin that.”
“No, I promise,” she said. “Can’t I just want to hang out with my friend?” she turned around and put her hands on Jane’s shoulders. “I promise you, love, I will never get you arrested. I’ll make sure you can get away before that happens. Cross my heart.” Chloe knew she was always putting Jane at risk, and she knew she should be more considerate of that, but she just hated hanging out at places like the mall or a restaurant. It got so boring, so repetitive. She just wanted to have some fun every now and again. “I know I say this every time, but next time you can pick where we hang out. Swear. So,” she said, turning back around to continue walking. “How was your holiday? Have some fun family time?”

“You… do realize you just admitted to breaking the law to me right?” Judy laughed a bit before setting a small hand on their shoulder. “Lucky for you ! I can cut you a little slack - you won’t have to pay a fine, but you will have to do a little community work here and there. It’s truly making the world a better place one step at a time! Positive view on it all… now what’s your name?” She asked pulling out her little pad to write out the ticket.
Shit. She hadn’t even realized she was a cop. She looked over at the woman’s hand on her shoulder, then back to the woman with her eyebrows scrunching up. Chloe twisted her face to look a bit like she was about to cry. “Oh... I’m sorry. I didn’t know,” Chloe started. “I, um... ok... I just, you can’t let my mum know, she’d be so disappointed, and she’s got so much on her plate already...” Chloe wasn’t sure how much she could milk this act. “My name is Kelly,” she lied through her teeth. There was no way she was giving this cop her real name.

“Get off on the best foot? You trespassed on my property and I’m pretty sure you stole from me.” Though he didn’t have proof of that and it wasn’t something he was going to go to the police for. He tried to avoid them at all costs. “Well, Chloe, this isn’t really a place you internship at.” He rose an eyebrow at her. “There’s no use in lying. And why would I allow someone that trespassed on my property intern at my company? Or one of your friends that could be just as horrid.”
“Well, can’t we just say bygones and all that, right?” she shrugged a shoulder innocently “And I’ve still got what I took from you, I can give it back if you really want it.” Chloe probably shouldn’t have admitted that quickly that she did actually steal from him. But what was he going to do? Call the cops and tell them she stole some of his drugs? Yeah, that’d work well. “Oh. Well... I mean, I don’t know. You never know. Maybe I was just showing off some of my many skills?” She knew this was a bad idea. She could feel her heart pounding in her throat and she didn’t even know why. “And no, trust me my friends are all way more responsible than me, you’d probably be happy to have them on your team.” She shrugged. “Well, they’d be better for the boating business. I doubt they’d be on board with your... other ventures.” She was making a lot of assumptions. But it didn’t matter if what she was saying was completely true or if she had facts to back them up. She just wanted his attention.
thedarlingjane:
“No, not really. We’re not American so we never celebrated it back home. So why do it here, you know?” Jane shrugged and looked back at her notes. “Maybe we can try it together.”
“Yeah, that’s what my mum was sayin’ about it. I just like food, so I was like, hey why not give it a try,” Chloe said, leaning her head on her hand. “Maybe. You know how to cook, or should we just do like, a snacks-giving?”

Since Halloween James had been very on edge. He wasn’t really paranoid that someone would follow him or anything like that but more paranoid of what might happen next. Would he get another mysterious message or an unexpected package? He was, once again, struggling with addiction all because some anonymous douchebag had to fuck with him. He wasn’t expecting that kid from his boat to show up either though. So when she did he rose an eyebrow. “You’re already in,” he pointed out. “What do you want?”
She chuckled awkwardly. He seemed less angry right now than he was the first time he saw her. But that was probably because she wasn’t trespassing really. “Thanks,” she said with a bit of a grin. “So, I know we didn’t really get off on the best foot before, and sorry about that.” She shifted. This was a much more formal conversation, and she was nervous. “Firstly, my name is Chloe. And I was just wondering if your business ever did any sort of, like, internships?” it was a stretch, it was a risk. But she figured she could give it a try. “And if you’re thinking ‘there’s no way in hell I’d let you near my business’, then I’m asking for a friend.” Chloe joked a bit.
“Does your family do anything for Thanksgiving? Because like, my mum doesn’t really think it’s worth all the hassle, but I dunno, I kind of wanted to try it all some time?” Chloe asked, mostly to just stall from doing her homework.
@thedarlingjane
She knew she shouldn’t be back here, but at least she wasn’t trespassing. She was just at his place of business, which probably wasn’t any better. Honestly, she felt like she needed to see him. Which was weird. But ever since all the weirdness around Halloween, and people’s secrets getting out, she had been on edge that someone would tell him what she knew. And she’d just been feeling weird and part of her wanted to be around him. Sure, he didn’t know her and didn’t think of her as anything but annoying, but she almost didn’t care. So Chloe had come up with what she thought could be a good workaround. Moving back to his office, she took a deep breath before knocking on the door. “Hey,” she said peaking her head in. “Hi, remember me? I um... so, funny story I learned a bit more about your business here and I just had a question to ask you?” Chloe slipped into his office. “Can I come in?”

“Why do you need leverage against this guy? It’s not like you know him or need leverage on him. You’re just taking unneeded risks now, Chloe.” Jane shook her head. She loved her best friend but of all the friends in the world she had to pick the rebellious one. “You broke the law?!” she asked a bit too loudly then quickly looked around to make sure no one heard her. “Me? I’m fine. What about you? Why are you acting out like this?”
“It’s... complicated. I know I don’t I just, like, it’s a lot. And I want to tell you, I do. I just don’t think I’m ready to tell anyone? It’s nothing serious,” she added quickly, realizing how it could seem, “I just... I know who he is, but he doesn’t know me and I’m just trying to figure out how to tell him that I know?” she shrugged. she looked to her at her exclamation. “Okay, sorry, I feel like I’m about to give you a heart attack, J.” she chuckled a bit. Chloe didn’t want to say she sounded like her mom with the ‘why are you acting out like this’ but she certainly thought it for a moment. But she knew it was just because Jane cared. “I’m fine, I promise. I’ve just been... I’ve been dealing with a lot.” She caved a bit. She couldn’t stand stressing Jane out this much. “My... I got my mom to tell me some stuff about my dad, okay? And I’ve just been trying to find him. And... I dunno. Sorry I’m being crazy.”
thedarlingjane:
“It’s my job to keep you out of trouble,” Jane told her. She looked up at the building as she followed Chloe, an anxious feeling coming over her. “You what?!” Jane stopped in her tracks and looked at her friend in disbelief. “I sure hope you mean the soda.” Though Jane knew that wasn’t the case. She started following her friend again and shook her head. “This sounds more illegal than it does an adventure…” she mumbled. “Yeah, I don’t want either of us to get arrested so it’s probably better we’re trespassing in this creepy building. Plus, I don’t want to find out what worse could be.”
Chloe shrugged. “Sure, we can say that. But like I said, it’s not for me. It’s more like... leverage? Or something. I dunno, I haven’t worked it all out in my head. Just... I need to mess with this guy somehow.” She knew she could trust Jane, but she wasn’t sure if she was ready to share the truth about her father with anyone. But she had a feeling that Jane would be one of the first people she told. “It was an illegal adventure, but it was still an adventure.” She looked over her shoulder to her friend. “But that’s enough about me, how’ve you been? And if you wanna go hang out somewhere else, we can. I don’t want you to be too worried.”
thedarlingjane:
“That’s a lie I’ve heard a thousand times,” Jane said with a roll of her eyes. “I couldn’t do that. You’re my best friend. No matter how much trouble you get me in I’d still talk to you.” Jane climbed over the fence and dropped down just as Chloe had. Being hers and Peter’s friend Jane had climbed plenty of fences. “Maybe it was just a small yacht,” she pointed out. “Okay, so what are you going to show me?” she asked, nervous. “It’s not like something horrible and bad is it?”
“Well, if I’m anything I’m consistent,” Chloe smiled. “Aw thanks,” she said with a bit of a teasing tone. “You’re my best friend, too. Even when you do try to keep me out of trouble,” she joked. She looked forward at the building. Chloe rolled her eyes. “You sound just like him. Well, even if it is, I’m not calling it that. And no, it’s nothing too bad. Just some pictures I took of the boat. Like the interior design, some shots of his desk. Nothing damning or too interesting. Also I may have snagged a gram of what I’m assuming is coke? But don’t worry I didn’t bring you out here to peer pressure you into anything; I didn’t even bring that with me. Just wanted to tell you about my adventure and I like this place.” She honestly hoped no one ever tried to make this building something real again. She didn’t want to lose one of her favorite hang out spots. “I’d take you to the dock to see the boat, but I’m pretty sure if I got caught there again I’d be arrested. Or worse.” She said it casually though. Like her life hadn’t been threatened last time.
