hey kids who read fic, listen up
itâs annoying to me as a Fanfic Elder that yâall donât understand how consent works in regards to reading fanfic
last night I saw a fic that had EIGHT of my favorite tags included and a great summary BUT it also contained a tag for a topic that bothers me. I weighed the pros/cons and decided NOT to read the fic because the ONE tag I disliked was something that could trigger a panic attack if the scene went into any sort of detail - it wasnât worth risking the eight good tags.
from the first moment I noticed the fic to the moment I decided not to read it, the entire experience was MY RESPONSIBILITY. the author tagged the fic correctly, I knew what my limits were, and I respected them.
if you find a fic with tags you donât like, JUST DONâT READ ITÂ
donât harass the author, donât post a big whiny rant about it on Tumblr, just keep scrolling
that is your job as a reader.Â

Iâve been gone long enough, donât you think?
Itâs not a crime to love what you cannot explain.
If klaroline really does reunite on June 16th I will never complain about anything again
I want to be very clear: I did not schedule this to post on Easter weekend.

the thing about fandomâs framing of steve as this rebel without a cause type of reckless idiot who is just incapable of following orders is that, like âangry chihuahuaâ pre-serum steve, i get where it comes from. itâs funny and meme-able, and, most importantly, itâs a way to distance steve from the boyscout image so many people associate him with, and that so many of his fans hate.
but, just as angry chihuaha steve, reckless idiot steve is also upsetting because it takes the most sincere, earnest, good things steve has done in the mcu and twists them to be not the actions of a noble hero, but the stupidity of a manchild who challenges everything and everyone for no reason. it bastardizes the very core of steveâs character, and, above all, equates making steve more cynic/less idealistic with making steve better and cooler.
and that sucks because, no, heâs not a boyscout, but, guys, the very core of steveâs character is cheesy. steve as a character represents an ideal, and he does so in the most sincere, earnest way possible. steveâs superpower is his heart and his bravery. heâs a hero because heâs a good person, not because heâs snarky, because heâs a genius, because heâs super powerful or because he was chosen by fate or a prophecy. heâs just⊠the ultimate Good Guy. it doesnât get much cheesier than that, unless your name is Clark Kent.Â
and if that isnât interesting to you, itâs cool. anti-heroes are the norm in the mcu and in most superhero movies for a reason: theyâre fun to watch and very relatable. but, iâm sorry, steve is just not one of them. steve is that guy who walks old ladies to cross the street, not the guy who cracks a bunch of jokes while kicking a villainâs ass. and youâre free to find this boring and lame as much as you want to, but thatâs IT. thatâs the character. and i feel like a lot of people are not comfortable just letting steve be that way - they need to twist his actions to make him seem much more of a rebel badass than he actually is, and since iâm so attached to this stupidly sincere portrayal of sheer goodness and bravery, it becomes upsetting.
like⊠streve crashed the Valkyrie into the water not because heâs an Extraâą, Dramatic Bitch or whatever, but because it was the only chance to land the plane without killing tons of innocent people. TFA is the ONLY origin movie in the mcu that doesnât end with a triumph, but with a tragedy, and fandom somehow thinks itâs fun to turn steveâs sacrifice into a laughing stock, to act like he did so because heâs stupid or missed buckyâs dick too much or anything of the sort, instead of seeing the fact that steve did what he did because he valued other peopleâs lives above his own, because he valued doing the right thing over getting what he, personally, wanted.
and i guess to me itâs upsetting because this is something that resonates so deeply with my values and the person i want to be, and so to see fandom turning it into something small and petty just hurts, even if itâs just a joking shitpost. because when you act like steve is just some insolent dude who challenges everything and everyone just because he can, you end up turning his character from a hero to an idiot with poor impulse control. when you make headcanons of his friends being annoyed and bored by his constant idealism and desire to do the right thing, you turn him into a burden to sam or bucky or natasha or whoever, ignoring how heâs actually a leader and an inspiration to the people around him - you ignore how he broke through buckyâs brainwashing through sheer loyalty, how he made sam want to suit up for the first time in years, how he gave natasha trust when no one else would have.Â
basically, you take away the beautiful things about his character and turn into something that, yeah, might be funnier, but itâs just so cynical itâs almost depressing. it turns something that is genuinely idealistic and optimistic into a pessimistic, shallow thing, and thatâs just not what steve rogers is meant to be.
He was also one of the few people to understand and empathize with Wanda and Pietro - To see their reasons for joining âShieldâ (Hydra), letting Hydra experiment on them in Age of Ultron.
And again with Wanda in Civil War.
He also empathized with Zemo, a man whoâd almost gotten Steveâs best friend killed and torn apart a new family heâd painstakingly built for himself in the new century.
Heâs a good egg, one of the best. Takes a mighty big heart to do what he does.
Thank you for this.
#i mean weâve been over this#steve could have tried to do a soft landing#or he could have given his coordinates if he had hope of being found#steve getting on that plane to stop it was him caring about peopleâs lives#his decision to crash and not be found?#that was something else entirely#youâre right that fandom reduces steveâs character a lot#but when it came to that crash#when it came to his decision#its because he didnât want to live anymore#steve rogersïżŒ#steve rogers meta#+.+
Ok, so, since you decided to add these tags to my post, I guess Iâm allowed to reply it.
First of all, we have absolutely not âbeen over thisâ, lol, because itâs not an actual argument.
Steve NEVER made a âchoiceâ to not be found. That doesnât even make sense per your own tags, because if he didnât want to live anymore, then the thought of being found wouldnât even cross his mind.Â
Steve doesnât give his coordinates to Peggy - his canon love interest, the person he wanted to come back to after the war was over - because Peggy wants the coordinates so he can find a safe landing spot, but Peggy is not there, Steve is, and he can see where the plane is headed and where it is at the moment, so he knows forcing it to crash there is the only option, as crashing anywhere else would probably cause a disaster. He very clearly tells her that he can âforce it downâ - a âsoft landingâ is not an option.
He doesnât think he will survive the crash. Which is a totally reasonable thing to expect, as he CANâT control the plane - because we SEE him trying to do so with the controls - and he has no idea how resistant his body can be after the serum, so even if he assumes he COULD survive the crash, thereâs no reason for him to assume he can survive BEING FROZEN.
Steve bears massive trauma over his time in the ice. He made the choice to sacrifice himself for the lives of others, not because he was sad because of one person. To take this super unselfish, heroic action and twist into something else just because it fits your shipping agenda shows blatant disregard for Steveâs character, and therefore perfectly illustrates what I was talking about in the initial post, so I guess I should thank you for providing such a clear example.Â
