bus boy animation
Adriaen van de velde’s golfers on the ice near haarlem inspired what i call the “bus boy”, i tohought that their clearly awkward lonely pose was perfect for waiting for something, that something was a bus. i also noticed how the original painting has the boy looking almost pig like due to the lack of detail and use of shadows, i tried doing something with this, making the person more animal like, but decided against it, embracing the more lonely and sad aspect that the lack of detail and shadows made.
Adriaens Brouwers tavern scene painting inspired what i call “the loo man”, cleary drunk and in a bit of pain, i thought the original pose was perfect for someone vomiting into a toilet after heavy drinking.
window woman concept inspired by antonio da vendri’s the guisti family of verona. the original character stood out for me for their long distance stare, this i thought was perfect for spaced out person sitting on a bus.

one of the many philosophies i try to live be life by is “learn from my mistakes so that i dont repeat them”… man was this film a huge mistake to me, which means that in my opinion what i made could be so much better, but i learnt alot of things for what not to do for not only the rest of uni but for any animation career in the future. first of all software, i was able to get a good grip of adobe animate but it was the wrong tool for the job, it would keep crashing and was very clunky, so next year im going to make it my mission to learn how to use tvpaint. secondly was timing, timing was a huge issue. how i worked was very inefficient, i just couldnt find the time to implement concepts that i had in my head to use what i know the course wants me to use (squash and stretch for example). as soon as we where given the brief i started working, and there where many days where id get out of bed and start working and working until my pc clock said 3am, i was always working and always had something new to show in my tutorials and yet i had to work up until the submission deadline and hand in a product i believe to be terrible. i didnt have time to do clean up, some colours are missing and it looks flat and dead. despite starting work from day one it looks like work someone did last minute… however i will strive to make sure i learn from my mistakes, for all future projects i will make a full compressive plan for my work that breaks down all the details so i know how to allocate my time well enough to have an animation i can be proud of. i dont like my final piece, but i did learn from it
Working with adobe. from this project i learnt one valuable lesson... adobe sucks. from the images you can see my work in adobe animate and the post production in premier pro. however you can also see a picture from my adobe save folder. every one of those files is the same project under different names, every “recover” is from when adobe animate crashed and auto saved the work just in time. it was only able to save my work 1/3 of the time... all those files are just 1/3 of all the crashes i suffered from using adobe animate.
Reference video for walking. i carried a stick to help get the hand positions for where the gun might go.
One min animation wip. this shows the line drawing for my animation with the final timings. from doing the line work i quickly learnt that copy pasting previously made work and holding frames when no movement is needed is a great way to save time.
Gif of first scene
Rough line work animation. this shows the rough line work i did to figure out timings and positionings of characters. from just doing the line work i learnt that animation really does need to be broken down into stages to simplify the process and the animation can take far longer than expected. i know now to plan my work in greater detail in the future.
