Summary: Elizabeth should have known their first anniversary would end up like this. She still insists on giving John his gift though.
Elizabeth lightly ran her fingers through John's hair. She'd been doing so for several hours as he lay unconscious. The routine mission of the day had ended in a fight. He had a severe concussion and several broken ribs.
Carson had tried to make her go rest, finally giving in and getting her a chair.
John's eyes fluttered open.
“Hi,” she said softly.
“Hi,” he replied uncertainly.
Carson hurried over and checked him, declaring that he would be kept overnight for observations. John didn't protest, which let Elizabeth know how bad off he was.
“Guess I'm missing dinner,” he said sadly.
“Guess so.”
“Your gift is in my dresser if you want to open it."
“No. I'll wait for you.” She handed him a small wrapped box. “You can open yours though.”
“No, if you're waiting I'll wait.”
“John?” she said, butterflies forming in her stomach. “Open it.”
He gave her an annoyed look but took the box and tugged on the green bow. Carefully, he tore off the tape and removed the lid.
“Elizabeth?” he asked, his eyes widening when he saw the contents. “Is…”
She nodded, not trusting herself to speak.
He pulled out the pregnancy test and looked at it, taking in the plus sign. Then he pulled out the tiny, baby blue hat.
“I didn't believe it, so I had Carson use the scanner, and it showed that it's true. A boy. And I got the fabric from Lieutenant Park, who sews. Then Lieutenant Park undid what I did and remade it properly. Sewing isn't a strong point-" she rushed until John pulled her into a kiss.
He pulled back and placed his hand on her still flat abdomen. “We're having a baby.”
She placed her hand over his and grinned. “We are. Happy anniversary.”
Summary: The guardrails hold, but only just. A stranger asks the questions neither of them will. John remembers a different lake and the last time he wanted something without apology. At their table, two cups change the colour of everything.
“Why am I here?” Elizabeth asked. “The moon is uninhabited.”
She and AR-1 had just arrived on M6X-623.
“Because I asked,” John replied.
“I forgot my gun,” Ronon stated.
“You ‘forgot’ your gun?” John repeated, disgusted.
Ronon just shrugged, a small smile on his face.
“Come on,” John said, landing the Jumper and getting up.
She looked at Teyla and Ronon, but they remained still.
“Don't you need to look for it?” she asked.
“I will,” Ronon replied, looking amused.
“What's going on?” she demanded.
“Come on. Please?” John asked.
She sighed and followed John out. There really was no time for this. She had-
“Elizabeth?” John said. “Look up.”
“What-" she began, more than a little irritated.
The words died before she could say them. All thought died.
A good portion of the sky was taken up by a giant blue planet. Sapphire blue, sky blue, and white clouds swirled in great bands. It was heavily ringed like Saturn, the rings at an angle. Several other moons dotted the sky, most rocky although one had pale yellow clouds. All of this was set against an inky black sky.
“John…” she breathed, speechless.
“It occurred to me that you have never been offworld like this. Yeah, Lantea's sky is pretty at night, but you've never seen…this,” John said quietly, his breath on her ear.
“It's spectacular,” she said, knowing that the words weren't enough. She grinned and glanced at him before looking back up at the sky.
“If you turn-” he said, gently guiding her. “-you'll see that moon. It has an ocean.”
“That's the one Doctor Bordeaux wants to test for life?” She asked, remembering the report.
“Yeah. The report doesn't quite do it justice, does it?”
“No. What direction is Atlantis?”
He took her hand gently in his and raised it, pointing to their left. “It would take, oh, ninety-five years by Jumper to get home.”
“Is it sad that we've been here two years and that still amazes me? We traveled that far in an instant.”
He lowered their arms but didn't let go of her hand. “No.”
“John? Thank you,” she said, leaning lightly against him.
