Can pitches be quite vague (as little as ' i want to draw this character') and are all three of the boxes necessary to fill out? Would just 1 strong idea be ok?? I am just getting too sad coming up with ideas for zines and getting excited for them just to get rejected lmao 😭
Pitches can be as detailed or as vague as desired, but we encourage more detailed pitches to be provided. Viewing pitches from applicants not only helps our team to gauge interest in what applicants want to create for the zine, but also what specific content artists are most interested in. (For example, if we receive a lot of pitches about Link as the mailman, we might go, well, shoot, I guess we should put him in the zine, versus if we receive absolutely zero pitches about Queen Zora, that tells us that people do not necessarily want to see her.) It will also inform us on whether or not we might need to meter out certain subjects that are more popular than others and encourage our accepted applicants to provide more unique pitches.
Only one pitch is required for the application, while the latter two are optional. Pitches play a very small part in the application grading process, but may help us to choose one contributor over another in the case of a tie.
With that said, let us hear your ideas! But don't fret if you do not provide a novel-length pitch; simple ideas are also welcome.
Hello! I'm interested in applying, however I'm unsure why there is a question asking about zine experience if applicants don't need it. I've been participating in zines for a decade now, so listing all with a note about each experience is quite extensive. I definitely understand about mods but not contributors so much. Thank you!
While zine experience does not play a role in whether or not an applicant gets into the zine, it assists the mod team in our voting process as well as how we might interact with various contributors. For example, if a zine veteran applies to our zine and gets in, we will not need to worry about providing much guidance or do any sort of hand-holding, as we might with someone who is brand new to zines.
Another example can include if someone has a lot of experience in digital zines, but not physical ones, so we can expect whether or not we will have to be more descriptive when explaining printing guidelines or manufacturer processes. This also applies to zine-goers who are usually accepted for one role, but apply to multiple; we may take preference into account, such as if someone is usually accepted for spot art, but wants to try their hand at page art and has the portfolio to back it up. We can then see that they've been a spot artist in the past and go, "Hey, why not let them branch out and do page art?" or "Hey, they have a lot of experience making really strong spot art, we should accept them for that!"
Additionally, seeing a zine list is a good gauge of how busy a person might be. While participating in ongoing projects is absolutely not a reason we will deny an applicant, it helps us to know what their current workload might look like and if we should expect things like extension requests or downtime at specific periods.
Lastly, our team is simply curious. It's fun to see what zines people have been in! Quite frequently, we will have people apply that are in zines our current team is on or has been in, and it's very fun to go, "Hey, I know this person!"
Overall, in our team's experience, this question provides a lot of knowledge and insight into each contributor and is very valuable in the long run.
hi there, i was just wondering if you could explain what you mean by 'pitch' on the application form? i'm deciding whether i want to apply for fanfiction writing.
"Pitches" refer to ideas of what an applicant may want to create for the zine.
For example, a page pitch might be something like "a single-page depicting Link showing the Ordon Village children all the weapons and gear he's obtained through his travels," or "a two page comic where Midna and Zelda speak in Zelda's tower at Hyrule Castle before the events of the game."
A writing pitch might be something like "a fic taking place shortly after the events of the game, where Link has to get used to no longer having the ability to shift into a wolf after Midna's departure."
A merch pitch might be something like "an enamel pin of the Mirror of Twilight" or "a bookmark depicting Midna on one side, and Zelda on the other."
Spot artist applicants do not have to provide pitches, as their assignments will be based off of the written work in the zine.
Hi! i have a question
I want to apply for page artist but i saw there's also an option for sport artist and i don't really know what that means. What's the difference between the two?
(Repeating from another ask) Spot artists do small illustrations to accompany written pieces, such as fanfiction or poetry. Spot art is usually less intensive than page art, but may require multiple assignments, such as multiple small illustrations to be placed throughout a written work.
Page art is what's on the tin: art that covers an entire page (or spread, which is two pages). Page art assignments are what people typically think of when it comes to zine work, and are fully-fleshed out pieces with thoughtful displays of composition, color usage, and balance.
