this post is a little different than my other ones but i thought of a scenario yesterday and i just had to write it down so... enjoy?🤭
Trewryn carefully opens his eyes. He sits up and looks around slowly.
He gulps and tries to stand. I need to get out of here. Once standing, he takes a quick look around go see if he sees anything useful but nothing catches his eye.
He starts to wander around and finds a big sword made out of what looks like leaves and a blue crystal on the end of the handle. It glows slightly and butterflies surround it. He feels drawn to it so he picks it up.
From the corner of his eye he sees a figure run past him, the figure looks an awful lot like himself. Wait... He starts following the figure quickly, they flee into a grotto.
"You! Why do you look like me? Why are you-"
He gets cut off by the doppelganger launching himself towards him. Trewryn blocks the attack with a swift movement and pushes the mirror image to the ground with the flat part of his blade.
"Yield, imposter, for I will not spare you!"
Suddenly, the figure in front of him changes appearance and starts begging for Trewryn to let him go. Trewryn gets off him and watches as he runs out of the grotto. As he was about to walk out aswell he hears a sound.
"What's that? Who's there?"
It sounded like a soft sniffling sound. Then another one. Trewryn decides to follow the sound. There, in the corner, is the figure of a man with his knees pulled up to his chest, head buried in his knees and his hands over his mouth in an attempt to supress the sounds, he's weeping.
"Who's there?" Trewryn asks again.
The figure jumps a little before peeking up at Trewryn with glossy eyes. For some reason Trewryn's breath hitches and he feels almost nauseous, his heart aches for the figure before him. He feels drawn to him and he doesn't know why.
Trewryn kneels down next to the shaking individual, eyes following his every move.
"Are you okay? Why are you weeping?"
The man blinks, he reaches his hand out as if he wanted to touch Trewryn's face but seems hesitant. Instead, Trewryn leans into the hand. The man's bottom lip starts to quiver.
"I failed you... I wasn't there for you like you were for me when I died."
His voice was deep, he spoke slowly and clearly, it was... Soothing almost. Trewryn blinked, he doesn't know what to say. He opens and closes his mouth a couple of times and furrows his eyebrows. He can't decide on which question to ask so he asks them all.
"Failed me? Who are you? What is this place? Do you know me? I seem to have forgotten who I am, do you know, perhaps?"
The figure takes a deep breath, asking himself where he should begin.
"My name... Is Trahearne. We-" he sighs, "You died, as did I a few years back. This place is called the mists, it's where souls go after departing. You were my second in command in my time as a marshal, commander. You and I were inseparable. We were in love..."
The last part was barely a whisper but Trewryn picked it up. Although his mind doesn't yet remember, it seems like his body does. Almost automatically, his hands slowly make it's way to Trahearne's face as he places them on his cheeks, wiping away his tears with his thumbs. His glow is bright red, Trahearne's glow is a soft purple.
"Why are you here? Are you hiding?"
Trewryn rubs his thumbs over Trahearne's cheeks in circular motions, Trahearne almost melts into the touch.
"...Yes." He replies earnestly.
Trewryn looked at him with a puzzled expression, his eyes curious.
"I... Watched you die. You looked terrified, your friends had abandoned you as you were struck down by a fallen God. All I wanted was to be by your side as you were by my side when I-" he lets out a shaky breath, "I was afraid to face you, Trewryn."
Trewryn's eyes widen with shock and fear as memories rush back into his head, he falls backwards, closing his eyes tightly and covering his ears with his hands. The memories are loud, way too loud. He whimpers, unable to drown the sound out.
Two hands are felt on his shoulders, almost pulling him back into reality. When he opens his eyes, it's quiet and there's a pair of arms around him. Instinctively he wraps his arms around the other aswell. Then it hits him.
The individual smells like lavender. He pries himself out of the other man's arms to take a look at him. He feels dizzy at the sight.
"Trahearne...?" He chokes out, as if he doesn't believe it.
Trahearne nods and gives him a weak smile, tears still making their way down his cheeks. Trewryn jumps back into his arms, almost tackling him.
"How? Why? You're here. Trahearne... By the pale tree, I've missed you so much." Tears of his own start pooling in his eyes.
"Dearheart... You died such a terrible death, I apologise I wasn't there for you, you must have been terrified."
The analogy was confirmed by the arms around Trahearne tightening.
"There, there... Take a deep breath. We're going to get you through this. It's not your time yet, there's still so much left for you to see."
Trahearne's words were soft, calculated almost. Trewryn bounced back, a look of shock on his face.
"You- Are you serious? There's a way for me to come back? I just got you back, I'm not leaving unless you are."
Trewryn crosses his arms and almost pouts. Trahearne cocks his eyebrow and chuckles at the sight, he should have known, Trewryn has always been hard-headed.
"Trewryn, I can't come back. My body was destroyed when Caladbolg-"
Trewryn hangs his head and starts rocking himself back and forth slightly. Trahearne sighs as he picks up on this. He pulls Trewryn into his lap and puts his hand on the back of Trewryn's head, shielding him. Trewryn is trembling slightly.
"I'm so sorry, my love. I shouldn't have brought that up, I know how much my request hurt you but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I died by your hand, there was no better way for me, it had to be you..."
He buries his face in the crook of Trahearne's neck and his arms find their way around his waist. He sighs, trying to pull himself together. Trahearne rocks him back and forth slightly in a soothing way.
"I know, I know... I didn't mean to upset you, I apologise." Trahearne coos. Trewryn relaxes.
After spending a while in eachothers arms, Trewryn wipes his silent tears and attempts to stand. He takes Trahearne by the hand and pulls him up aswell.
"Come on, it's time for us to go back home." Trewryn says with a serious tone.
Trahearne shakes his head, avoiding eye contact.
"Why not? Logically, what's stopping you from stepping through that portal?"
Trahearne ponders. He opens his mouth and closes it again, not sure what to say.
"Grenth has told me that your path hasn't ended, he told me that souls of humans whose bodies were destroyed or unmendable were lost, he doesn't know whether they've gone astray or just... Simply ceased to exist." Trahearne says.
"But you're not human, neither am I. If Grenth speaks the truth, what's the difference between my body being incinerated and yours bursting because of Caladbolg's magic?"
Trahearne thinks, he's unsure, but in reality, he has nothing to lose. The gates are open to Trewryn, they might be able to both squeeze through.
"I'll walk you to the portal." Trahearne says.
Once arrived to the portal, Trewryn turns his back towards it and holds both Trahearne's hands firmly. He takes a step backwards. Then another one. Trahearne hesitantly follows.
Once Trewryn can feel the pull of the portal, he looks over his shoulder briefly to take a look at it, he's nervous, he turns back around when-
"Goodbye, my love." Trahearne takes his chance to swiftly free himself and to gently push Trewryn into the portal.
Trewryn lets out a scream and tries resisting the pull of the portal. His eyes darting around in panic for anything to hold on to.
"Why? I didn't even get the chance to say goodbye! Trahearne, how could you-" His voice was cut off because he was sucked into the portal.
Trahearne falls to his knees. He feels terrible. It was definitely impulsive but it was for the best, right? Trewryn still had purpose and he wouldn't have left if he knew Trahearne would have to stay behind... Right?
Suddenly, the portal starts to grow unstable. Trahearne looks up in shock as he starts to feel a gravitational pull towards the portal.
"No!" He yells, but it's too late. The portal sucks him in, aswell.
Trewryn's body starts to lift. Curious eyes gaze upon it.
"Get back!" A voice grumbles. Rytlock's?
"Wait, what's going on there? You all said the commander was dead!" Even Taimi.
Trewryn starts to gain consciousness. He grimaces, remembering what happened.
"I... I was dead, Taimi. But now I'm back."
"Yeah, but that's not how "dead" works." Taimi says, dumbfounded and in shock.
"She makes a good point. We all checked, commander, and-"
"Trahearne, where is he?" Trewryn interrupts Canach and he starts looking around.
His friends look at eachother with a sad expression and hesitantly follow from a distance. Kasmeer opens her mouth but Canach jabs her shakes his head vigorously.
Trewryn grows more restless the longer he can't find Trahearne, his eyes start filling with tears and he feels anger bubbling up in his chest. He decides to call for him.
"Trahearne?! By the pale tree, if I find out you've failed to follow I-"
"I'm... Here." A voice croaks out.
Trewryn's eyes widen as he runs over to the noise. There, next to the water, a blue pod had split open and a figure lays down next to it. It was Trahearne.
He opens his eyes and stands up, looking around. His eyes land on Trewryn, who's running towards him at lightning speed. He feels himself getting tackled to the floor and lets out an 'oompf' sound.
"Don't you ever do that to me again! You scared me so badly, I thought that would be the last time I'd see you! You... You-" Trewryn breaks down in sobs, inconsolable. "You're here. You're alive..."
Trahearne sighs and smiles as he relaxes into the bone-crushing hug. The sound of metal hitting the floor and a yelp brought them back to their senses.
Trewryn sits up and looks at the direction the sound came from. There were his friends, Kasmeer with her hands covering her mouth, Rytlock who dropped his sword, mouth agape, Canach looking like he might have a mental breakdown and Taimi yelling something along the lines of 'What happened?! Is everyone alright?!'.
"Hello, old friends." Trahearne says with a slight smile.
