He may have spent almost 10 years on ships before arriving at Neverland, and who knows how long it’s been since then, but that doesn’t stop him from being proper. He spent his adolescence with the British elite, and he knows the rules – even though he never followed them until he found himself on the sea. No company of unchaperoned, unmarried women. Always say grace before dinner. Always stand until all ladies are sitting. Do not discuss politics around the ladies. He has infinite rules memorised and he follows them to a T. He doesn’t know it now, but these hangups are mostly caused by a mild case of obsessive-compulsive disorder; he has latched onto social proprieties and rituals and without them, he feels inexplicably terrified.
The hygiene rules he insists on come also from his medical knowledge; everything his crew can do to prevent getting ill should be done. If only they’d listen to him, instead of just smiling and rolling their eyes when he lectures them. He recognises that much of his rules and rituals are ridiculous and tries to set it aside, especially when it comes to the women – they don’t need to be suffering sexism from him, especially when he genuinely doesn’t consider them lesser in any way, shape or form. They know that it comes from something within him as opposed to any nasty prejudices he holds, and consequently they mock him endlessly for it. He’ll never admit that he finds it funny too… but sometimes he can be caught smiling as they laugh.
TRISTAN'S RITUALS:
please note that on some days tristan's ocd is stronger than other days. occasionally he will entirely go without some of these rituals and think nothing of it. on some days he'll panic when forced to put them aside.
Insists you wash your hands before entering his office.
Carries a kerchief on him at all times and will wipe down all seats before sitting.
Regularly washes the kerchief in boiling water; any other type of water and the kerchief loses its power.
Does not like the company of unchaperoned, unmarried women. He is learning to recover from this one fast, because he respects women.
