The girls grinned at each other before looking back at him. “Yes, we are,” Evelyn answered. “I’m Geraldine and she’s Evelyn.”

“You know, you’re much more handsome than I expected. Ann said you were terribly ugly, but that she thought it would be rude of her to tell you that. By the way, what are you making for dinner?”

“Ann, may I try on your necklace?” Her tone was soft, not a normal thing for Geraldine De Laage, but reserved for times when she really wanted something. 

Abandoning the dress she was currently admiring, Evelyn raced to her sister’s side, the two of them sharing a look. “I bet if we asked Daddy he’d buy us two just like that.”

With  a  delicate hand the princess draped her necklace around Geraldine’s neck, carefully  fastening  the  clasp. “There. You look positively beautiful.”

She had only a moment to look before Evelyn appeared beside her sister.   Twins,   heaven bless them.  They’d always been such a handful.

“If you asked him nicely, I imagine he would.  But where would you wear them?”

Geraldine’s face broke out into an enormous grin as she moved a hand to her neck to admire the jewelry. “I look more like a princess than you do,” she teased. “But I don’t think I would make a very good princess. Evy might, she’s very regal.”

Obviously enjoying her sister’s compliment, Evelyn stood up a bit straighter, as if it would prove the point. “Where would we wear them? To the opera of course. We’re trying to talk Aunt Helene into letting us go with her and her friends next week.”
