I miss him and the entire xillia cast.......
"First Strike" is literally "but what if we gave Flynn Scifo daddy issues" the movie.
(screencap credit)
there’s no heterosexual explanation for this
Happy Scifo Day! 4/4
"don't you have a better picture of him?" what do you mean, there's nothing wrong with this.
Flynn has a mixed reputation in fandom. A lot of his stronger character traits are locked behind unlocalized side games or side content. While the original Vesperia (360) gives us enough to have an idea of Flynn's personality and motives, we miss out on his goofier and kind-hearted scenes.
While Flynn's (arguably) stronger scenes are with Yuri, the PS3/DE version shows some potential with other castmates, primarily Patty, Estelle, and Raven. He's mainly seen with his best teammates: Sodia and Witcher. But it'd be a stretch to say they're friends.
Despite his accomplishments, Flynn's very much alone. The game does like to show that he has his share of fangirls, but when you really break into the core of his character, his group lacks the family niche that Brave Vesperia has. There are various moments in PS3/DE that hint or outright show this (Yumanju, 3rd(?) visit). One of the three side novels by Yajima Sara (Golden Moon) states that even Estelle thought it'd be a bit of a stretch to call Flynn a friend.
Flynn also presents himself as a dutybound, no-nonsense knight. He's mastered the whole knightly persona that he even manages to fool players of the game! In truth, Flynn grew up in the lower quarter along with Yuri, so he's been exposed to the darker side of the world. Surrounded by nobles, he constantly had to prove himself as he climbed up the ranks of the knights. This makes Flynn more grounded than the majority of Zaphias' higher ups, making him a threat to antagonists like Cumore and Ragou. However, he can be just as reckless as Yuri and it's shown he's got a bit of a temper as well. The only time we really see the "real" Flynn is when he's with Yuri and Brave Vesperia.
White Knight characters can be hit or miss, especially if you're someone who avoids cliches. Flynn teeters on deconstructing this trope but unfortunately isn't given enough of the spotlight to fully show this. We get hints that Flynn's frustration with the system pushes him to consider reckless actions (beginning of Act 2), implying a very interesting interpretation of the character if it were allowed.
It's unlikely we'll get a Flynn route of Vesperia (much like Leon's route in Destiny DC), but in light of unlocalized spinoffs and prequel novels, I think the inclusion of one would greatly expand on the character.
I love this cutscene
Flynn February | Flynn Friday (Day 8)
Welcome to the last Flynn Friday of Flynn February! The image above is from Tales of Crestoria.
Flynn is best known as the foil character to Vesperia’s Yuri Lowell, but there’s a lot more to unpack with him through side materials or spinoff games. He looks and acts like a textbook white knight, but his poor upbringing makes him more grounded compared to the nobles of Zaphias. At his core, Flynn’s a kind person with a bit of a temper, but the difference between Flynn the Knight and Flynn Scifo make for a complex character. You can dress him up in shining armor and he can recite the lines you would expect from a knight… however, Flynn’s got a handful of quirks that take apart that image he wears in front of the public (note: in Japanese, he uses the formal 私 when addressing superiors, but he switches to his preferred pronoun 僕 when he’s among friends).
That’s about it for Flynn February. Thanks for sticking around! If you want more Flynn content, some fans in the Japanese fanbase celebrate Scifo Day, which is April 4th. Really ambitious fans turn it into Scifo Month (lol).
Flynn February | Scifo Sunday (Day 7)

Moonlight Aqua is the weapon equipped to Flynn when he joins the party for the second time. It’s also one of his 3 star artes in Rays (specifically: Sonic Thrust). Personally, I always found it odd that you get Moonlight Aqua through Flynn. It looks elegant and stands out among his other weapons. Not that I’m complaining.
Flynn February | Flynn Friday (Day 6)
Happy Flynn Friday! He's so much more expressive (translation: angry) in First Strike... but that's also cause he's a) younger than his game version, b) has Daddy Issues (TM).
Flynn February | Scifo Sunday (Day 5)
Happy Day 5! Hey, remember when the game implied Flynn was contemplating how to handle Ragou?
Flynn February | Flynn Friday (Day 4)
Happy Day 4 of Flynn February!
Flynn February | Scifo Sunday (Day 3)
Flynn and Patty have scenes together because they were added to the party in the PS3/Definitive Edition version. While it's easy to write off said scenes as "out of place", it's easy to forget that both characters are/were leaders. This allows for conversations (such as their night before the final battle scene) that they probably couldn't have with the other party members. It's nice that they have one another to lean on, and it's one relationship I wish we got more of in the (now cancelled) mobages...
Listening to the Vesperia 10th anniversary event again and...
...some interesting things:
According to Higuchi, the heart-stamped letter in Flynn's closet was supposed to trigger a skit. Likely, it would've just been "oh look how popular Flynn is with the girls lol".
The "Judith and Rita are sisters" is so obscure that even Judith and Rita's seiyuus were caught off guard by the question ("ジュディスとリタの関係を知っていましたか?"). It is funny how only Raven's backstory (and First Strike) got acknowledgement in mobage, like Asteria... but not Danzaisha (Yuri + Flynn backstory) or Ryuutsukai (Judith backstory). Ultimately, the relationship just feels like lip service and the idea of one writer (Okuda) that just slipped through the cracks and into the game.
There was a question about where Rita and Karol would be in 10 years (assuming just those two cause they're the "kids" of the group. Patty don't count apparently), but I kinda tuned out, sorry...
It's weird hearing Repede speak in full sentences, but weirder seeing his seiyuu bark, haha...
Karol turning into Overdrive Big Kid and being carried around by Patty (lol)
There's something about Miyano (Flynn), Hisakawa (Judith), and Saito (Patty)'s outfits that reflect their characters.
Flynn February | Flynn Friday (Day 2)
Sodia and Witcher are Flynn's most trusted comrades within the Imperial Knights. In a hypothetical Flynn route (much like Leon in Destiny DC), we likely would've had these two as Flynn's main party.
Although both characters greatly respect Flynn, it seems they struggle to see him as anything but their leader...
Flynn February | Scifo Sunday (Day 1)
[Danzaisha no Keifu image (right) source]
Flynn's origins are a bit of a mess, put lightly. In First Strike, he's the son of a knight (Finath Scifo) and grew up in the lower quarter. However, when Finath passed away, Flynn and his mother were forced to move. In Danzaisha, Flynn was not originally from the lower quarter, but much like the events of the movie, the death of his father is the catalyst for him moving from one home to another. In this case, it's the reverse: Rather moving out of the lower quarter (First Strike), he moves to the lower quarter (Danzaisha).
Is it better to have left Flynn's family out of the Vesperia-verse entirely? Or does exploring his past make him more fleshed out?
