I’m finally reading a Penny Reid book (Truth or Beard). I’m under a bit of a time crunch because it’s an interlibrary loan with no renewal option so I have to read it by Monday and I also have a two-week window for a library ebook of Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger by Rebecca Traister. 

That’s all to set up my intense irritation that the first scene in Truth or Beard starts out with the heroine in a place of vulnerability: she sees someone she believes to be a paralyzing crush while dressed in a ridiculous costume. Now, she chose to dress as sexy Gandulf so that part I have to blame on her and she also somehow managed to grow up in a small town adjacent to this person that she has a crush on so badly that she freezes up in his presence and doesn’t appear to have tried to overcome or manage those feelings in any way during those years. But I still have to read this scene of humiliation and I HATE IT. I’ve taken three days to go 10 pages.

If this damn heroine doesn’t gain the upper hand soon, I swear…

Yeah, I hate reading scenes that give me secondhand anxiety and/or mortification. I have friends who find those scenes laugh-worthy, but they just aren’t fun for me.

Yes! I know I’m supposed to be laughing about this frozen woman dressed as sexy Gandulf but it makes my skin crawl!

Just the fact that she was dressed as sexy Gandalf had me laughing… I just imagine a slinky dress and then a giant beard and hat 😆😆😆

Just finished Aston Scott last night. I was shocked by how long it was. Lately, it's rare to come across a romance novel that is more than 250 pages. I have read a few of Nina Levine books, so I was excited to read this one. Unfortunately, I can't say I enjoyed it all that much.

Aston is a force to be reckoned with. He is intense yet shows Lorelei a softer side, as soft as a bull in a china shop can be.

`Ashton is already bulldozing his way into my life and I’m beginning to think I’m helpless to slow him down.`

Lorelei is a runner. Anytime someone gets to close she pushes them away or ”needs space” it takes Aston’s demanding approach at everything to break down her walls.

`Your walls are high, and you did your best to keep me out, but here I am breaking them down brick by brick. And as much as you try to keep me out, and as much as we fight over that, you’re not going anywhere, and you know that.`

There are also great supporting characters that are interesting to get to know. Alexandra, Simone, Jessica, and Jack. A lot was going on with these characters that bled into Aston’s life. He is the rock for his family which helps to soften his character a lot.

I think the book could have been shorter. A lot of the plot was drawn out while the conflict was easily summed up in one chapter by a few phone calls.
