closing up shop!
heyoo mod c here. as i’m sure most of you have noticed, this blog is rarely, if ever, updated anymore. i’ve decided to officially stop updating - the submission box will close, but the ask box will remain open in case people have the occasional question. the blog itself will stay up, nothing will be deleted, and it will be here for people to browse through.
i’ve personally owned this blog for almost 3 years now and i think it has run its course. i don’t really care for sherlock anymore and don’t have the time to sift through submissions and post replies, and though this blog was entertaining for myself and for others, i feel bad just leaving it sit like this with no formal post. i have work and the fact that i’m going to college in the fall to deal with and the time i spend online isn’t a lot anymore so i would rather spend it doing other things.Â
but still, thanks to everyone who has followed this blog! every message we get, hateful or not, has been nice to read, and i’ve met quite a few great people, like mod r and mod a, here on this blog. if the next season of sherlock ever does come out, i’m sure there will be people to pick up our slack and point out the problematique™ in the fandom.
so, bye, i guess! if you’d like to continue following me, feel free to do so over at my personal blog, and go ahead and give mod a a follow as well.Â
it’s been real, ughsherlockfandom & friends.
thought you guys might enjoy this
Small blog notice
Hi, Mod R here, just dropping in with a little notice to let you guys know that I’m leaving this blog.
There’s no big dramatic reason, I’ve just been finding it more and more stressful recently (and have had less and less capacity to handle additional stress with irl stuff going on) and since I’m not really involved in the Sherlock fandom anymore I don’t really feel like I have anything to contribute, other than the same discussions that have been had within fandom over and over and over.  I also feel like there’s a considerable age difference between myself and a lot of the OPs of things that get submitted to this blog (I’m 22) and I’m not totally comfortable criticising them, especially in such a public way.
I’ve been a mod on this blog for I think almost two years, and in that time I’ve said things on here that nowadays would cause me to cringe.  There have even been instances where I’ve gone to someone long after a discussion and apologised personally, because I realised was speaking from a place of ignorance.  I hope I can be forgiven for those times, and that I didn’t cause too much harm.  And I guess I hope that any good things I said were helpful to people in some way too :)
I’m gonna be removing myself from the blog immediately after posting this, so if anyone needs to contact me for any reason please don’t message this blog, I can be reached at my personal blog, gothdirk, or my (mostly inactive) BBC Sherlock sideblog, abitofholmesandwatson.  Thanks for reading this, thanks for following the blog, thanks to my fellow mods (especially C who founded this blog) for being lovely, and I hope everyone reading this has a lovely rest of their day :)
-Mod R, signing out.
i went through all 178 pages are you proud of me
that's true dedication
lol i hate these neurotypicals in the sherlock fandom like implying people with personaility disorders (which is what "sociopathy" is) are tall dark serious nd handsome like fcukin bendip cumbobo like.... no?? i have bpd and im nothing like sherlock at all stop fetishizing us personality disorders are a spectrum
except sociopathy is in the DSM V??? It's under "antisocial personality disorder" but it's the same mental illness!! -signed, a person diagnosed with ASPD last year
Ah yeah, I wasn't trying to imply that it just doesn't exist, sorry if that's how I came across. Â My point was that the term sociopathy isn't used diagnostically any more, and sometimes comes with a lot of outdated assumptions, especially given the updated criteria for ASPD in the DSM-V. Â Sorry for phrasing it so badly, I was a little frustrated since I'd just explained all that to what I'm pretty sure was the same person twice now off anon. Â I should have been clearer, sorry again.

to the anon who asked if sherlock could be good aroace representation - no. definitely not. even if he was written better, the traits of lacking empathy and not understanding other's feelings are extremely stereotypical and offensive. he was even called a robot at one point in the series and him being aroace representation would be as bad as the sassy gay guy stereotype

Sherlock is ace in the books

ace/aro speaking: ACD Sherlock would be good representation but BBC Sherlock wouldn't be, imo
Anonymous said to ughsherlockfandom: Sherlock could've been a good aro/ace representation but the show immediately started playing his disinterest in sex as a "let's all snicker to ourselves about Sherlock Holmes not knowing what sex is lol" and the fandom has so deeply latched onto Johnlock that the aro and ace ideas died a long time ago
Do u think Sherlock would be good aro/ace representation (if Moffatt wasnt running the show bc he shouldnt be writing queer characters) or would lack of empathy and the fact that ppl think he's a sociopath not be okay for representation?
I feel like those traits go along with pretty negative aro/ace stereotypes, but I'm personally not aro & currently unsure of where I fall on the ace spectrum so I'll open this up for aro and/or ace followers to answer. Â
- mod rÂ
are you sure about sociopathy not being a disorder used today bc my friend got diagnosed by a psychologist like a year and a half ago and i dont think he'd lie??
is this the same person who sent us the exact same message off anon cause im just gonna tell you the exact same thing; sociopathy is not a currently recognised diagnosis according to the DSM-V.
-mod r
edit: for clarification (because i phrased this horribly) what used to be called sociopathy is now under Antisocial Personality Disorder in the DSM-V. Â my point was supposed to be that the term sociopathy is no longer used, not that it no longer exists, but i phrased it horribly and i apologise to anyone i might have offended.
Kill me
Is it alright to ship the actors as long as I keep it to myself?
I think everyone has different opinions on this and I'm not the internet police so if you want to or don't want to, you really don't need any validation as long as it isn't hurting ppl? I guess
oh god I made a "not my division" joke at work before I could stop myself. I'm so ashamed.
don't be ashamed, we've all made those jokes and honestly they're harmless and fun a few times around. when people start laying them on thick and constantly insisting that it's some funny fandom giggle giggle thing it can get annoying. i used to make not my division jokes. everyone is guilty
- mod c
did you hear about the sherLOCKED con VIP ticket price. like 3k. who does that. last con that I remember did that was a scam
yikes lmao you weren't kidding. i don't know who would pay almost 3k to talk to a few actors/writers/producers and have some pictures and autographs and merch...
- mod c
Yooooo you're back we missed you
we're always here. we all just have things to do in life and we don't receive much aside from questions nowadays, and it's a bit hard to post when there aren't submissions unfortunately!!
- mod c
remember all those 'not our division' jokes because i do i HATED THEM with such a passion, i was being ridiculous, but there was this one post that was just edits of the gif of lestrade saying "not our division" in different languages with drawn-on stereotypes (for the one in spanish there was a sombrero and he was holding a taco, the one in french it was a baguette and a mustache, etc) UGHGHGHGHG
oh my god i vividly remember that awful post because i used to follow a bunch of sherlock blogs and they would constantly reblog it?? it was the worst post ever sometimes one of the gifs from it will occasionally cross my dash when someone answers an ask or something and it's like the devil is trying to reach up and pull me into hell. not today, satan. not today

I think the reason people make up their school stories and post them to tumblr is because they've got very unhappy lives. I was bullied pretty badly in school and when I got home I often used to fantasise, imagine what I should have said, or what I would have liked to happen. This is probably in a similar vein but more public. Someone teases them about their Sherlock backpack and they imagine what it would've been like if someone intervened, then they post it to tumblr to make it feel more real.
That's a really good perspective, and while I don't think it's a blanket cause for all of them it's almost certainly the case at least sometimes. Â I know I did the exact same thing fantasising about how things could have gone better when I was bullied in school. Â I personally don't see anything wrong with people wanting to pretend they get the support and attention they need, and I think the belittling of 'cries for attention' and the like can be pretty damaging, since everyone needs attention and support sometimes, and it's often representative of larger problems someone's having to deal with. Â As long as people aren't being hurt or wildly misled I don't really see anything wrong with people fantasising on the internet to make themselves feel better.
