"You look a lot like the fox only…with Shadow’s colors. Well. Hello, I suppose."
"I am a fox, and my name is Shadow. Why?" The little fox takes a step back. Last time he had encountered a Eggman alternate, he had nearly been killed. Not something he wanted to remember.
Shadow sighed, tossing another failed drawing in the long filled trash. He sprawled across the small bed, closing his eyes. He still had the stupid brace on his neck... ugh. How humiliating.
".... Mmph."
He could speak... sorta, but his voice was very embarrassing. It cracked on every other word and it sounded like he lost his voice. It was supposed to heal given time, but for the Fox that felt like never.
The hospital had let him out at last. He still had to wear the embarrassing neck brace, though. He couldn't Chaos Control home... So that meant he had to walk home, didn't it?
Shadow grinned, patting Knuckles’ back. Ah, good. He finally told Sonic.
Sighing, the fox leaned against Knuckles. He wrote again.
'Are you mad?'
Knuckles rolled his eyes with a small smile as he was patted, and then leaned on the bed a bit to watch the fox write, frowning. Was he mad? About what? Oh, the fighting. Knuckles shrugged and shook his head.
"Mad? Nah. I think you’re an idiot, but we all do stupid shit. I would do the same for you any day."
Shadow laughed weakly, leaning against the hedgehog. He then leaned down and brought up some grapes and offered them to Knuckles.
Shadow smiled, grabbing the pen and wiping his eyes before writing.
'How is Sonic?'
Boy, he had a lot of catching up he needed to do.
"Sonic…
Sonic’s pretty good. Tired, like I am,” Knuckles said, a light blush across his snout. “You… you didn’t miss too much. Besides, uh.. well… I guess I told him I, you know, er… loved him and all that.”
Knuckles didn’t know if that was something you talked about, but oh well. “O-otherwise, nothing interesting. Ha ha.”
Shadow grinned, patting Knuckles' back. Ah, good. He finally told Sonic.
Sighing, the fox leaned against Knuckles. He wrote again.
'Are you mad?'

"Yeah, it’s me, buddy.." Knuckles couldn’t quite hug the fox back but he did nuzzle his cheek against the side of Shadow’s face. "I heard you were brave and you totally kicked ass. That’s my brother."
He had made Knuckles proud? Yes! He held onto Knuckles for a bit before letting go, pointing to his arms.
"You… How…?"
He was trying to ask how Knuckles’ arms were, but speaking too much would hurt. Sighing, he reached for the paper. It was awkward for him to lean over with a neck brace.
Knuckles glanced at his arms, wondering for a moment what the other was asking before he was able to put two and two together. “Oh, they’re fine. Sore. Sonic fixed them up but they’ve still got a little healing to do. I’m much better off than you are, I think.”
He helped the other grab his paper using his left hand, the less sore of the two, struggling only a little to get his fingers to clutch at the paper.
Shadow smiled, grabbing the pen and wiping his eyes before writing.
'How is Sonic?'

He wished he'd been informed of Shadow's condition sooner, but it had been busy, between idiots and his broken arms. "I heard about what you did, you big idiot. You're lucky to be in one piece, you know that!" He may have sounded angry, but he leaned in to press his nose to the boy's forehead affectionately.
"Yeah, it’s me, buddy.." Knuckles couldn’t quite hug the fox back but he did nuzzle his cheek against the side of Shadow’s face. "I heard you were brave and you totally kicked ass. That’s my brother."

Shadow squeaked, eyes widening. A big grin spread across his face when he saw the hero, looking up at him with big red eyes filled with tears. He threw his arms around Knuckles and began sniffling, tears running down his face. For the first time in days, he spoke.
"Knu-ckles...?"
It was soft, raspy, almost inaudible. It sounded more like a wheeze than anything. It hurt like hell but it was worth it. The fox was just happy to see his best friend again.

Eating some fruit, Shadow finished up his picture. He looked at it and sighed, putting it down. He wheezed a bit, laying back down. Ugh, the hospital bed was less than comfy.
Guess who fell asleep drawing Knuckles?
