Romans began to make first mirrors from glass about 20 centuries ago. At 13-14th centuries Nurnberg and Venice were leading producers of mirrors. Despite their beauty and practical use they always have been very expensive and became affordable only when silver coating of the back of the mirror was replaced by aluminum. Nowadays mirrors are widely used in interiors not only for the practical use, but also to decorate space and to enlarge it.
Can a space be actually be enlarged with mirrors? Yes. But there are certain rules that must be followed to make a space cozy and beautiful.
First of all, you have to make sure, that view, reflected in the mirror is pleasant. Avoid hanging mirror in places to reflect corners, doors, kitchen, heaters and other views you don’t want to double. Hang mirrors to reflect nice window view (that also brings more light), artworks or wallpaper, plants and other nice things.
Second, watch the effect that mirror gives. If you have a long hall, don’t hang the mirror at the end of it – it will seem endless. Don’t hang the mirror in front of another mirrors (especially big ones) – they will create vague space effect – sometimes nice to look at it, but definitely not pleasant to live in. This is often used by store owners and designers, bus the effect on customers is not the best – people between two mirrors feel disoriented, lost and not cozy. Much better is to hang mirrors in 90 degrees angle – space doubles and makes no unpleasant effects.
There is common opinion, that mirror hanged on the ceiling gives more space and height to the room. That is actually true, but it also gives “side” effects – it reflects all things in the room and doubles them, also creates vague feeling of unnaturally transformed space.
Avoid mirrors on the floor – they will reflect light and create unpleasant gleams that may blind you. This would also create “not stable” floor effects.
Third, choose the right size of the mirror, depending on the result you want to achieve. Choose the right frame to decorate interior or no framed mirror. Not framed mirrors work great in bathrooms, halls, wardrobes, framed will perfectly fit in living room, above fireplace, bedroom.
Various shapes, colors, sizes, and styles of the mirrors help to decorate every space. They can even serve as works of art and may also become useful to hide something, for example, door to laundry or storage room, closet, cabinet.
Wall lamps or candles, placed on or before the mirrors, create not only decorative and romantic effect, but also give the space more light and depth.
Shaped small mirrors can become great decoration for children’s rooms – small star, butterfly or flower shaped mirrors will reflect the light and give small gleams of light, they will adorn the wall – your children will love it.
Mirror furniture can be a great interior decoration tip as well. It looks very trendy, stylish and chic. The advantage of this furniture is the mirror itself, due to its possibility to reflect light and make any place much brighter. Mirror furniture “disappears” in space and even big cupboards can look light and grace, so it is perfect solution for small spaces. Mirror furniture can add charm and luxury to every interior.
However, here the same rules apply – attention must be paid to what mirror furniture will reflect. And do not put to much mirror furniture in one room to prevent reflecting too many surfaces, because furniture piece itself has many angles and instead of lightness you can receive overloaded interior.
