Since its launch, back in April 2010, Apple has sold more than 100 million iPads – a mind boggling quantity unmatched and way ahead of any other device manufacturer. It literally revolutionised the ‘hand held’ mobile, tablet market across the world. Unsurprisingly, global enterprise’s interest in the iPad is growing and it is reported that a staggering 94 percent of the Fortune 500 companies are either testing or deploying the iPad. A fact supported by the recent news that Barclays, one of the world’s largest banks, has just bought 8,500 iPads for use by their branch staff!

With the rapid development of mobile technologies, a new style of learning, termed as mobile learning, has exploded everywhere in the world. This is now considered as an essential learning style in the future. The transition to m-learning is inevitable; m-learning with its all forms can promote the learning process in a way that encourages a pedagogic shift from a teacher-centric model to a learner-centric approach. The students can learn just in time in their daily lives whenever they need to learn using mobile devices like Tablets and Smart Phones.

This proliferation of devices is having a strange ‘dumbing-down’ effect on a lot of the eLearning courseware being created right now.
We are starting to ‘genericize’ content, it is starting to look the same, feel the same, and function in a similar manner. Whatever happened to those interactive engaging pieces of courseware that made one go ‘cool, I like this’; not much of that to be seen. Why do I think this way? Last week I was at the eLearning Network’s 25th Birthday Bash in London.
It was a fantastic event with some great speakers and an opportunity to learn drumming.
I spoke (for 5 mins) on how mobile enables informal learning.
Here’s a summary of my talk.

It can be quite hard to find examples of tablets being leveraged for performance and learning in the public domain. Most companies are quite cagey about how they are using tablets and related technology for learning; to be honest, I don’t see why, but that is another matter altogether.
Emirates is using tablets coupled with custom developed applications as performance support tools for crew-members.

Have you ever thought as to why LMS switching is a highly conscious decision? I will tell you why. It’s not only because it calls for heavy investments and cumbersome processes pertaining to LMS selection and implementation, but it also brings along a factor of ‘change’ that affects the learners in the process, significantly. It is these learners who are often ignored (to an extent) during the entire switching process, and yet the ones who actually leverage the benefits of the LMS and set the tune for your training ROI. In this post, I talk of the 2 critical factors of LMS switching from the learners’ perspective.

What L&D Professionals Should Know About Tin Can API
Ever since I first heard about the Tin Can API, I launched a full-fledged quest to learn and understand as much as I could about this development which was hailed by many in the elearning fraternity as a game-changer. That’s primarily because it has the potential to change the paradigms of workplace learning by tracking and recording learner data outside the traditional elearning environment. Algorithmically Generated Content In Learning
Recently I read an article in Forbes about using algorithmically generated articles in publications. That was quite amazing, and set me thinking about the possibilities such technology would bring to learning. For years, learning/training as revolved around the generation of ‘content’, in fact for a number of years learning was all about content and methods to deliver it to learners. The internet and the profusion of user-generated content has changed that, so much content, and so many methods to deliver it. This profusion serves very little purpose for learning unless ‘sense’ can be made of it. Algorithms enter the picture at this point, they are already playing significant roles in our lives, some very apparent, others not so much. Gamification In Learning
There has been so much buzz around gamification recently that it can be difficult to separate the hype from the reality. With clients asking the first questions about In this post I’m attempting to draw some lines around gamification in learning. First off, as I understand it, gamification in learning means attempting to apply the principles that make individuals play games for thousands of hours. Gamification is not ‘gaming’, we needn’t create digital games costing thousands of dollars and hours to benefit.

Mobile Learning: The Future of Workplace Learning (CLO Summit India – Slidedeck)
Last week I was at the CLO Summit, one of the largest gatherings of L&D professionals in India. Held in Mumbai, the event saw some eminent industry experts talk on different topics related to L&D in the workplace. I too had an opportunity to share my thoughts, as part of panel of power session on the future trends and tools in L&D under the track ‘Mobile Social and E-Learning’. I firmly believe that mLearning is the future of learning, be it at the workplace or otherwise. In my talk I initially shared 3 key principles of mLearning, which I think are critical to getting mLearning right.

The Four Stages of Mobile Maturity
After posing some questions about what constitutes a mobile learning ecosystem, I’ve continued working towards a model that can describe a mobile learning ecosystem, a task far harder than initially imagined. As has been discussed endlessly on our blog before, the future of learning is mobile. One interesting aspect I’ve noticed from my research is that organizations move on an evolutionary path as they mature in their adoption of mobile technologies that impact learning significantly. Not all organizations have come along the path equally, some are beginning, some are advanced on the way, some haven’t even started.
Broadly, I think there are four stages that an organization that starts to leverage mobile technology will go through. Take this with a pinch of salt, lots of things differ and there are probably a hundred other factors that probably influence the adoption of technology and its leverage within an organization. Keeping it simple – Continue Reading..The Four Stages of Mobile Maturity
