Sat at the top, Tom Meighan promises they aināt going anywhere.Ā
Itās Friday night at Reading and despite the fact Tom Meighan was in hospital a few days earlier, the result of a virus caught in transit, heās stoked at the prospect of once again headlining the festival.
āIām a survivor,ā he grins. āIām just excited. Itās gonna be monster when we walk on that stage.ā Thereās the promise that tonight, like every Kasabian show will see the crowd get āthe fucking night of their lives, guarantee ya,ā and the reason the band are still sat at the top is āāCos weāre good yāknow what I mean? Thereās no other reason why. Weāve been there and worn the t-shirt. Itās great to be up there with Eminem and Muse. Theyāre fucking fantastic so weāre proud. Weāre always proud.ā
The band have always had pride but itās taken a while for people to take them seriously. When they topped the bill back in 2012, people sneered. When they headlined Glastonbury in 2014, it was more of the same. The world might have been against them then but now, itās a different story. Underdogs? āNo! Fucking hell, that tagās gone. We are what we are now. Everyone thought weād just go away just because we came out years ago guns blazing. We were mouthy little shites werenāt we? Now, weāre a peopleās band. And more than that, it crosses generations.ā
Kasabian have been a band for twenty years now. And the thing that keeps it exciting is unity. That raging message of togetherness that the scream from the biggest of platforms, is also shared in the quiet compound beforehand.
āWeāre a family and weāre close. I mean weāve been through a hell of a lot. Weāve got that unity. If weāve got that and we enjoy what weāre doing and keep writing good music then weāll be together forever. Weāll turn out to be like The Who or the fucking Stones. I hate using the word established but Kasabian, itās a name now. The nameās fucking there. Like Oasis or the Stone Roses or Muse or Arctic Monkeys. On that scale, thereās very few left.ā
Following on from āFor Crying Out Loudā, tonight Kasabian step it up once more. The new album, āopened up a lot of things, on a personal level. That album is personal. Itās a very human album. Itās about personal things and thatās why I love it the most,ā while their set, well, āweāre just relentless, yāknow? Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.ā Theyāre sat on a collection of greatest hits and āthatās what makes me laugh. Where do you put that song or this song?ā Thereās no chance of them doing a Foo Fighters though.
āFuck that. I donāt play for three hours. I play for 1 hour 45, max. I aināt getting into that 3-hour stadium shit. Itās up to them if they want to do that, I love the Foo Fighters, but fuck that. No, thatās not for me, my friend.ā
As for new music, āthatās a question. I canāt even think about tomorrow,ā but thereās an underlying grin. Kasabian arenāt getting of the throne anytime soon.
