Hola, me llamo Julia.
The application for the Second Edition of the online course "Conservation of underwater metals" is now open. This course is offered by Bubble Media and Acre Modera(Spanish Professional Association of Conservators of Cultural Heritage) thanks to Victoria Folgueira, conservator of Finisterre Project. It is designed to enrich any career related to Cultural Heritage Conservation & Preservation offering graduates a pathway to get in touch with Underwater Archaeology Conservation.
Y ahà está, de vuelta en su lugar original. And there it is, back in its original place. #dolmen #archaeology #conservation #arqueologÃa #conservación
Casola do Foxo Antes de colocar el ortostato que hemos pegado. Before putting back the stone we glued. #dolmen #archaeology #conservation #arqueologÃa #conservación
Casola do Foxo Creo que esto es lo más grande que he pegado nunca. I think this is the biggest object I've glued back together. #dolmen #archaeology #conservation #arqueologÃa #conservación
Here I am again, trying to decipher the writing of a XVII century scribe. #archive #paleography #history #calligraphy
"Pedra formosa" Some hillforts of Galicia and Portugal have ritual saunas with this kind of stones at the entrance so people had to kneel or even crawl to get in or out. #archaeology #hillfort #sauna #arqueologÃa #castro #Borneiro
You can tell it's going to be a tough weather day when the construction workers don't show up. #archaeology
The wall we're consolidating looks great. It's difficult to tell wich ones are the new stones! Except for the little slate shards we're using as a separating element, of course :) #archaeology #conservation #wall #stone
You'd think that working in august would grant good weather... Ha! Not in Galicia. #archaeology #hillfort #wall
Infant tomb made with two tiles at the church of Moraime. I'm consolidating it before its reburial. #archaeology #conservation #tomb
There’s a new entry at the Finisterre Project blog about the Ribadeo Ship. This is the one where the bronze breech blocks I treated where found. It’s an amazing ship, a very well preserved galleon that might’ve been part of one of the Armadas that where sent to invade England.
My treatment of the three breech blocks, with before and after photos, was explained here, here and here.
CLEANING AN OLD LANTERN FROM THE TOWER OF HERCULES
The Torre de Hércules (Tower of Hercules) is one of the identity signs of the city of A Coruña. It’s the oldest roman lighthouse still working today. The fact that it’s a working lighthouse means that its equipment has to be updated before it’s obsolete, and that’s how this lantern ended up in the MUNCYT.
It’s turning mechanism is still working and that’s what head conservator Joaquina Leal is using to reach the different glass lenses.
