Every evening, people line up down the block at the night market near my flat to buy “fan tuan” - or rice rolls - from this guy. He takes a big scoop of sticky rice, makes a well, adds pork floss, minced meat, pickled radish and other goodies. Then he squeezes it into a tamale shape. I’m not sure how he got so popular. The week’s best back-alley discovery in #Taipei. The Chinese part of the sign says “”Waiting for Tom,” so I wondered if the place was really named after my favorite singer. During my last days inLittle Rock, I finally got around to eating at Flying Fish. I ordered the fried shrimp and catfish basket with fries and hush puppies. It was fantastic. I wish the rest of the country knew how to batter fry like they do in the South. There was a long line, and I struck up a conversation with a delightful retired couple who urged me to try Fred’s Fish House in their home town of Mammouth Springs, Arkansas.
