ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤEveryone has their reasons for choosing an irrelevant thing to be mad about. This morning, Shay chooses that he resents morning people for their lack of integrity. The best time to judge them is at night when the racing thoughts corner them in their bed and their eyes dart to every dark corner of their bedroom. They wonder what festers in a bundle of darkness underneath their dim lamp. Shay is there. Maybe he isn't.

In the morning, he is lethargic. He doesn't partake in coffee, he thinks it tastes like garbage. Still, despite his aversion, the man partakes in invading crowded rooms. A sideways glance folds over his counterpart when his complaint is spoken aloud. He watches another man for a moment and narrows his eyes. "Graveya'ds get loud at night." Shay remarks, looking at a mug filled with water cradled in his hands.

"I think you are jus' fucked." He hides his crooked smirk against the ceramic edge of the cup.

[ nights are miserable for Roe. have been since the night of Jace's coup. every shadow holds some secret or memory or possible enemy. it's worse yet when he's this far from his Pack- his family, his friends, his safety and comfort. but he's got a good lead on Jace, or so he hopes. last night was particularly unbearable. his hotel is full of convention attendees. lack of sleep has made him equally insufferable this morning. ]

" --- what d'you mean by that? fucked how?" [ he turns to look at him over his shoulder, not bothering to put in effort enough to turn and face him properly. he's not sure why, but something about it, the way he said it, or maybe just his energy in general, is making him itch. just a little itch between the shoulder blades, crawling up the back of his neck. ]

[ he reaches to check if something's actually there, crawling. ]

" --- man, what the hell-" [ his reaching fingers don't find anything- it still feels like something's there though. ]

For all that he was, Clark was a good guest. He stood politely, did not touch anything, and otherwise kept to his own little sphere of personal space. ❝ A place like this is perfect for a man like me. ❞ He countered plainly.

❝ Foundation is important. Connections are important. Local is important. Most seem to forget that last bit. ❞ People made up the towns and the cities and the covens and the packs and so on. Clark didn't just roam about putting his grubby hands into pockets without care; there was a method to his madness and that typically involved getting on some personal level with notable local figures.

❝ I don't mind gettin' my shoes dirty when I need to. ❞ A glance down for them and a simple shrug. He was a neat freak and liked his tidiness, but he was much less married to the concept than most could be led to believe. If the situation called for it, he could get plenty dirty.

❝ Mainly just poking my head in. Making introductions. I suppose I could drum up some problem if I need to. There's always plenty of those to be had. ❞

[ she hums a smile, finishing up the candle in hand. then her attention is on him fully. ]

" --- no, no need for any more problems. got enough problems 'round here naturally, and you're doin' just fine not bein' one of 'em."

[ at the moment, anyway. he stands head and shoulders above her; she wipes her hands on her apron as she looks up at him, quiet for a beat as she reads what she can just from his aura, his outward sway. ]

[ his posture, his tone, the way of him as a being in the physical and metaphysical alike, little clues to who and what he is. not the whole truth. but enough to know he's of an ilk to be affected by her warding if he intended her any harm, and she trusts this fact. not him, necessarily. he'll have to earn that first, and it'll take a sight more than just a friendly introduction. just the fact therein. he couldn't have gotten past them if his intention wasn't genuine. ]

" --- well go on then, honey. make your introduction. i'm assuming you already know my name, seeing as how it's painted on the sign out front. and on the door. and the business cards next to your elbow." [ she's smiling, playful, but her tone is politely leaning toward curt. she's a busy woman, as she's sure he's well aware. ]

" --- oh, re-lax, would'ya? i can't help it you're the loudest thing in the parking lot."

[ not carefully chosen. not at all. ]

" --- maybe i'm here to eat, same as you two. hey, Theo- tell your partner to take a fuckin' chill pill."

[ Theo, who recognized the voice straight away, is already making his way around to Anthea's side of the Escalade. her posture is strung tighter than a fiddle string. after the day they've had, this is the last thing they need. something else to amp up the tension. there's an urge to reach out, try and comfort her, or take the file just to free her hands, but he doesn't act on it. he bucks his chin in greeting to his Sentinel. ]

" --- Agent Anthea Jones, this is Rowan Aucoin- or just Roe. he's a member of my... family." [ though he doesn't see anyone else in the parking lot, he figures he may as well be careful. ]

" --- he won't try anything. it's alright. Roe, what are you doing here? you're not here to eat, you hate Italian food." [ Rowan barks a laugh at that, but doesn't move to come any closer. Theo's right. even the smell of the air around the restaurant is giving him a headache. that's why he's sticking so close to the tree- there's a patch of honeysuckle winding its way up the trunk. ]

" --- Elmira sent me. said she found something relevant to your case. those kids, or whatever it was. supposedly possessed or somethin', right? she wouldn't tell me what she found, though. just called and said you'd have to go an' see her, said it's real urgent. like tonight urgent. so i high-tailed it up here and was about to come in an' find you, but the smell damn near made me sick. i sent you a text, but you never check your fuckin' phone, Theo. pretty sure Elmire tried to call you too, before she called me. that's what i'm doin' here. all that alright with you, Agent Jones?"

"Is everything quite alright, dear?"

The concerned voice came from Jennifer, a sweet elderly neighbour who often baked for Mylo when her health allowed it. She lived a floor below him in flat number twenty-three, easily distinguishable by the daisy-shaped doormat placed outside. It was her favourite flower, and the Wytch always made sure that the ones planted in a pot upon her balcony never died. They were indestructible little things, she often said whenever he visited, unaware that it was his secret way of showing gratitude for the homemade treats she gave him. Since she refused any money or favours, it was the least he could do for her. And now he paused on the landing, her front door wide open as usual, turning to see the woman staring over at him from a rather large and comfy armchair, holding a cup and saucer unsteadily upon her lap. There was a radio softly chattering away on a small table besides her.

"...Avia Jenny?" A name he called her, despite having no relation. It was a sign of respect.

"Last night. There was an awful crash from your flat. Did you drop something, dear?"

"Last night? I was-" away, he wanted to explain. His flat had been empty all weekend after the Wytch left to visit his Avia Adelaide where she rested under an elm besides Wisteria cottage in Coldbridge; it was her home as a Wytchling and remained standing three-hundred years later. She was sentimental and believed that her body should lie where her life began, resulting in the coven honouring her wishes. So now, once every month, her grandson came to visit for the weekend and they spent time together -- just as they did when she was alive nearly three decades ago. "-clumsy. I dropped a vase and it smashed everywhere. Sorry for making you worry, Avia." He tried to keep his voice steady, but it felt like the breath had been stolen from his lungs and the words came out stuttered. He glanced up towards the landing ceiling.

"I...I should go and make sure I picked up all the glass pieces, okay? And please stop leaving your door wide open..."

The Wytch bolted upstairs after closing Jennifer's door, reaching his own landing through a secure fire door. It was quiet, and as he stood outside the front door of flat thirty-eight, there was nothing outward to suggest that something was amiss. No scratch marks, nor broken fixtures. But Mylo could sense somebody inside; an energy that warbled and spiked from an individual who was in pain. How strange. With slow and careful movements, the door was unlocked without a key, its mechanism shifting by his own outstretched hand to prevent whoever was on the other side an opportunity to escape. As it was pushed open, he was met with the sight of blood covering most of his hardwood flooring, leading from the shattered sliding balcony doors towards a lethargic figure sat in the middle of his open-plan living room. Most of his furniture was in disarray from being forcefully pushed aside.

So this is what Jennifer heard. He would have described it as more of an explosion than a crash but - bless her soul - she was incredibly deaf.

There was a long stretch of silence as they locked eyes, appearing to challenge the other into making the first move, but it was broken by a yawn and slurred swearing. His unexpected visitor seemed completely unfazed by what he'd done. In the time it took for him to come up with a weak excuse, Mylo had already determined that he was no Wytch-hunter. They were less haphazard than this. Although his mind was unsettled, waves of unease sloshing around within the pit of his stomach, the Wytch suddenly blurted out an incredulous laugh. He closed the door behind him without touching it - an audible click as the lock slid into place - and swirls of grey appeared in his eyes as the presence of power flowed through his veins, subdued but prepared.

"Mugged?" It was repeated plainly, unbelieved, as the Wytch removed his backpack and placed it on a hook attached to his front door. His jacket was next. "Well...that explains the blood. But the rest is a blur? Hm..." a hum of contemplation followed, and it seemed to echo around the room for a few seconds as Mylo suddenly disappeared from view, before reappearing directly besides the stranger with a face like thunder. Blackened veins crept up the side of his neck and face. "...how frustrating. I would have loved to know how you managed to smash your way into a flat three stories up. You made such a mess and frightened my elderly neighbour." He was probably more worried about that than anything else, thinking about how he was away whilst all this was happening. She was alone; what if he had broken into her flat, instead?

"Tell me who or what you are, mendax." He had no patience for liars. "You have five seconds or I begin digging around that muddled mind of yours -- and trust me, your head will definitely be hurting after that."

[ Jace isn't looking at him as he closes the door, instead taking in his surroundings with a slightly more attentive eye. he hears the lock click into place- that brings his attention back to the man, drawing his gaze up to those darkening eyes. he takes note of the grey swirling there. ah, he thinks. this one has magick. ]

[ he opens his mouth to say something, but the very thought vanishes as the other does, literally! into thin air one second and reappearing at Jace's side the next, expression storm-dark. he should be, at the very least, intimidated- would be, probably, if he weren't so hungover. so, despite the reflexive flinch that came when the other appeared at his side, his only reaction is to stare. curiosity blatant, icy hues following those inky black veins up a slender neck, over a clenched jaw, to those furious eyes. he smiles. it's a slow, dangerous look, showing off canines a little too long, a little too sharp for a human mouth. ]

" --- three stories, monsieur? impressive! i too, would love to know how i managed that. drunk as i was, especially. but i don't know. i don't know why i chose your flat, either, of all the places i could have gone. fate, perhaps? gods, you are magnifique, i could look at you for hours." [ he's like a tiny Greek god, the werewolf thinks, scratching at a bit of dried blood behind his ear. his unwilling host threatens to go digging in his muddled mind if he doesn't come out with some truth for himself- he sighs, heavy, weary. he doesn't know what mendax means, or even what language it is- he doesn't particularly care, either. ]

" --- trust me, mon cher, you don't want to do that. digging around in there- it would give you terrible nightmares. don't do that. i'll tell you. or at least, what i can remember. calme-toi, tout va bien."

[ no use trying to play the victim. he isn't one. he stretches, his back popping audibly as he does. he makes no move to stand though, not yet. he's comfortable enough where he is, for now. standing just isn't worth the trouble at the moment. ]

" --- Je m'appelle Jace. je suis un loup-garou."

[ he flashes a grin. but it quickly dissolves into another yawn. there, he's told him. considers it generous too, as he's told him not only who, but also what. wasn't in English, or whatever the other guy was speaking- was that Latin? either way, Jace doesn't care. he's rubbing his eyes with his bloodied knuckles and stifling another yawn. he shifts to sit cross-legged, rests his elbow on his knee and his chin in his palm, still staring up at the man. ]

" --- and you? gonna tell me your name, or do i get to give you one of my own choosing?"

Thistle mirrored the gesture and nodded his own head in greeting, in acknowledgement of Arlo. The seemed polite enough at least, better than some folk he'd run into in his travels.

❝ Oh, no. For sure. I'm not really lookin' to go stormin' up to locals. I'm pretty intimate with the concept of folks bein' pretty guarded and defensive if you roll up on them in their own domiciles. Just places like this. ❞ Public businesses and the like where he had a better chance of snagging someone who would answer his questions or just freely talk his ear off.

His nose had wrinkled some in mild amusement. ❝ Kid? How old are you if I'm Kid? Should I be callin' you Gramps? ❞ Thistle bit a lop-sided grin and fidgeted some with his drink, his jovial demeanor sobering just a pinch.

❝ I'm sure it's just people gettin' wild about wildlife and it's nothin' spooky at all but-— well, werewolves? Y'ever hear any local stories about that? Bullshit, I know. But I like get my ear on the ground about it anyway. Makes it easier to circle back and figure out the real explanation. In this case, I'd just assume it's humans fuckin' about with normal wolves' environment and such. ❞

" --- older'n you might think." [ is all he'll say on the matter. he sips his spiked tea and listens, expression neutral but interested. werewolves! what are the chances he'd ask about that? well, not much of a reach, really. call it part of the tourist trap- and the truth. there's all kinds of cryptids in Haventown, and of course his own Pack are part of the local lore. so, not really a stretch that a cryptid-hunter such as Thistle would be asking about them. ]

[ so long as it's all for Youtube, he doesn't see the harm in entertaining some questions. no way this kid's an actual hunter, right? still, it takes a real effort not to snort into his drink or choke or something stupid that might raise suspicion. ]

" --- oh, yeah. Haventown loves it's campfire stories. werewolves is an old favorite around these parts. the Dogman, all that. all kinds'a shapeshifters supposedly been sighted here, or in the hollers just oustide'a town. never seen any Dogman myself, though. there's this one guy, though, Devin- used to be a regular here until about... what was it, ten or so years ago? somethin' like that. anyway, he left town after his dog got carried off by what he swore up'n down was a werewolf. said it broke into his chicken coop an' made a bloody massacre of 'em. " [ he sets his tea down and rests his elbows against the bar, shrugs lazily as if he's told this story a thousand times. ]

" --- bunch of us went up there, an' there were some odd tracks, an' such. camped out to see for ourselves, but all we seen was a couple raccoons. ask me though, i think it was a little too much moonshine an' a few teenagers playin' pranks on ol' Dev. dog was never found though. kind'a strange." [ he pauses to greet another customer as they come in, tells them to have a seat wherever they'd like and a waitress will be with them shortly. ]

" --- his niece still lives up there. it's the old farm off Hollyhock Road. her name's Junie. she might have a couple stories for ya. i'm sure she wouldn't mind talkin' to ya if you tell her ol' Arlo sent ya. she works over at Elmira's Apothecary. you been there yet?"

[The second Theo is mentioned her posturing changes-and it’s almost comical the way she throws her hands up and drops her shoulders at his mention. Yeah he did leave her out there…but she hadn’t exactly been cooperative in her own right. How many times did he try to wrestle her into the car before driving off? Jack doesn’t need to know.] 

‘You know actually I’m not hungry and I’m fine walking, tell Theo he can fuck right off.’ 

[she keeps on walking, but knows she’s not alone. Sent this man all the way out here for her? That would feel sweet, if she wasn’t raging mad. It’s not like he’d actually done anything-she was the one who pissed him off, started the squabble and then refused to sit in the car with him for any length of time. She stops and turns back to Jack.] 

‘Actually no-‘ [she moves towards the car, but stops short of leaning in, she’s all pride and bruised ego.] ‘You can tell him he can call me and get back to work when he finds his spine or pulls his head out of the sand, whichever happens first. And I’m still walking.’

[ there's no way he's calling Theo to tell him to fuck off. even on her behalf. would be funny though, but no way. he regards her with a patient smile as she moves toward the car, still leaning out his window enough that she can plainly see his face. the harsh wash of her anger prickles at him, pride sharp and icy- but there's an undercurrent of something else, a confusion, hurt feelings. anger is almost always a secondary emotion, a mask for fear or pain. in this case, it seems the latter. either way, it's dangerous. she tells him she's still walking and he lifts one shoulder in a shrug. ]

" --- if you insist on walking, i'll just have to follow you. that's gonna be weird for both of us. but i gave Othello my word, and i'm going to see to it that you get where you're going safely."

[ he wants to ask what makes her think Theo's got his head in the sand, wants to ask what they argued about, but he won't. not really his business, even though he's involved now. she's known Theo for what, a week? not long enough to have gotten anywhere past the surface of his apathetic state. Jack knows better. ]

" --- he's far from spineless." [ it comes out on a whim, a thought spoken aloud. hadn't really meant for it to come out, but there it is. if she knew the truth of what Theo's been through, would she still judge him so harshly? ]

" --- listen, he probably figured you wouldn't want a ride from him, either. but he's worried about you. you can try calling him if you don't wanna ride with me. i get it, i'm a total stranger pullin' up on you in the middle'a nowhere. but there's far worse things than me out in these streets, Agent Jones. you're staying at Dreamsuite, right?"

[Anthea doesn’t turn her face away from the sun, only stretches out more into her chair, arms reaching up and flexing out her fingers before reaching back for her cup. She only rolls her head towards him, but her eyes are closed, enjoying the early morning light.] 

‘3am-ish. I like the quiet of being by myself.’ [it’s the only time I can be myself, she means, but they don’t know each other well enough for that.] 

‘What did you take me for? A Pilates girl? Don’t say natural, that would be insulting to me and my surgeon.’

[ he breathes something softer than a scoff, not quite a laugh. opens one eye just enough to see she's not looking at him, though she's turned her face to him. catlike. he questions not for the first time if she has some sort of were-panther ancestors. ]

" --- no. Pilates never even crossed my mind. Krav Maga maybe."

[ doesn't voice the retort on his mind about her surgeon remark. no need to start anything, even though he's curious now if she meant it. finishes his coffee, screwing his face up as he turns away from the sun. there are times he enjoys it, but this is not one of them. it's just after the new moon, and he's feeling the drag. another groan, hands raking through his hair. ]

" --- did your liaison call you?"
