Reina nods along with her conversation partner. “Right, okay, so, like, I totally understand what you’re saying but I’m gonna have to stop you there and remind you that Gryffindor has been the reigning quidditch team for, uh, how many years now? And let’s not forget who that’s thanks to, yeah?”

“um, yeah? it’s thanks to the super hot power couple that protects your sorry ass on the pitch, reina.” val spoke, examining her finger nails before looking up with a shrug and a smirk, “don’t you worry, i have plenty of pent up aggression from this summer that i’m ready to take out on the pitch. i bet i can even beat last years record for most people sent to the hospital wing, set by.... oh, yes---me.”

“aw, and here i thought you were a prefect, not a water boy. color me unsurprised.” valeria leaned forward, resting her chin in her hands, “you’re right, hamilton. by the very mention of butterbeer---which i’m sure they’ve never heard of----i’ve corrupted them entirely. shame on me.”

throughout his many, many years of telling longbottom to control his children, draco had never once had anything but the utmost pity for the man. valeria carrow was almost terrifying, if only for her single-mindedness. like an unprecedented hurricane, determined to bowl over everything in its path. so much so that he didn’t even try to correct the fibs she fed the poor first year — he’d learn better soon enough. “that was poor form, miss carrow. you’re lucky i believe in building character; the headmistress would not appreciate your fear-mongering ways. are you sure that butterbeer isn’t spiked? you sound inebriated.”

valeria waved a hand dismissively, a gesture propably not suited for conversation with a professor, but she was neither a slytherin nor an alchemy student, so she figured she had little reason to care about draco malfoy’s opinion on her niceties, and every reason to have a little fun getting under his skin. “i’m weeding out the brave from the cowardly, you know----daring, nerve, and chivalry? if any of them wet their pants, i’ll send them your way.” she laughed, then taking another sip and somehow managing to keep her smirk firmly in place. “i don’t know.” it wasn’t, “but if it is, i had nothing to do with it, professor. and i’m insulted, quite frankly, appalled, at the suggestion otherwise. has professor longbottom been gossiping about me? that’s slander. i maintain that bed caught itself on fire.”

he’d only come in for a pint with a few friends, planning to call it an early night, when the ministry congregation arrived, and soon after that everything seemed to go to hell. jasper approached the bar almost warily; there were high ranking ministry officials here, and no matter how much he hated fenrir, someone with the last name greyback ought to be miles away from a crowd like this. but no one else seemed to be leaving, and he figured it was better to stay and not draw attention to himself. “whiskey sour, please? er,” he shied away from a rather rowdy group that had just arrived, ducking to the side just in time to avoid being shoulder checked, “make it a double, actually.”

“ah, well----” ainsley looked, almost longingly, towards the door, but acquiesed in the end. “okay. i told the sitter i’d be back at 9 or so, so i guess i have the time, right?” and it had been so long since ainsley had gotten a night off, even if the circumstances weren’t ideal, she deserved a bit of time to herself, didn’t she? “liam’s not on the express, thank god,” she assured the other woman, more than happy to pull out her own pocketbook if it meant her brother was safe, “but still-----you can’t help but worry, even if they’re someone else’s kids. it’s not right.”

Once more the blame rested on her shoulders. The attack had been planned and it was obvious that it was Jacqueline who had tipped off the Order…obviously. Alecto insisted and so she would take the punishment whether she had part in it or not. Coming of age did nothing to help her escape and still she stood at the mercy of her ‘mother’. Claws gripped her chin as Alecto drew closer, her voice was dripping with pure malice as she threatened her – cut short by distinctive pop of someone apparating in. Alecto cast a menacing glance at the ‘intruder’ before shoving Jacqueline away, causing her daughter to stumble backwards into a passerby as she left.

Jacqueline was quick to steady herself, her heart beating rapidly in her ears as she forced herself to stay calm and take care of the situation at hand. Jac gripped her wand, swinging around to point at the person who had caught her – calm and collected, “You saw nothing; You heard nothing.”

nadia had always valued being the only girl born to this generation of zabinis. it wasn’t that she didn’t love her brothers, or value them more than she valued herself, even; but she’d been, she was, the apple of her grandmother’s eye, and she’d never wanted a sister around to compete with that. but when she’d gone to hogwarts, she’d made sisters of her own sort----jacqueline and artemis. sisters who she considered family every bit as much as elijah and zach, family she would protect. and so, when alecto-----monster that she is, nadia always knew alecto was vile----shoved her daughter right into nadia’s arms, it took everything in her not to chase the older woman down and put her down like the mad dog she clearly was. mad or not, she was jacqueline’s mother, and jac-----nadia’s place was by her side, right now.

“oh, shut up.” her words lacked the bite they might have with anyone else, and, clinical as ever, nadia set about taking stock of her friend, looking for any possible injuries that alecto might have given before nadia had stumbled upon the scene. “here,” reaching into her bag, nadia handed her a paste for the bruises----she knew jacqueline’s pride was too like her own to allow nadia to treat her like an invalid. so she averted her gaze, fingers gripped tightly around her bag; she couldn’t help but say, “you say the word and she’s dead, jacqueline. you know that.”

“Could’ve been worse. Camping is a way superior celebration than the Welcoming Feast. S’mores is way better than broiled pheasant, at any rate.”  I always told McGoogles that we ought to go on a school trip. She never took too warmly to that suggestion. Or the suggestion that we should have fireworks to commemorate the end of the year. I’ve even offered to supply the fireworks myself with that offer.”

dorian was wired----an anger and anxiety coursing through his veins that had him clenching his fists to keep from lashing out; because toby was on the express. someone had attacked the express, and toby was there, and he wasn’t. the thin sliver of restraint he’d managed to hold on to since his father’s death (murder, his father had been murdered) was precariously close to snapping; and perhaps hermione had seen that, and that was why she hadn’t allowed him to go with her to check on the students himself. so here he was, doing nothing-----being utterly useless----and it grated, the inaction going against what ever nerve in his body was telling him to do. but he pushed it down, for the time being, because what else could he do?

“i heard you gave quite a show back in the day with those fireworks. mcgees probably just worried about what you’d do to try and top yourself. and broiled pheasant?----man, that’s why you always head straight for the steak and kidney pie, everyone knows that.”

First, a delay. Now, technical issues on a train whose original conception was met with disdain from purebloods who called the Muggle-made devise "insanitary, unsafe, and demeaning.” Brent could not help but believe that there was a connection. He had never been the type to give credence to coincidences. After Apparating to the location of the train’s breakdown that afternoon, Brent could only use his position in the Department of Magical Education so long before he became overbearing and it was after the insistence of professors and aurors on scene that he made his way back to the Leaky Cauldron in no mood for festivities. And he only did so after tucking his son into his designated tent for the night. The night air was cool as he strolled toward the entrance of the pub, the ambiance amplifying the foreboding sense not even his nerves of steel could quite shake. 

isaiah nursed the drink he’d taken from the bar, leaning against the stone wall that served as the entrance to diagon alley, facing the leaky cauldron’s entrance so he wouldn’t be caught by surprise should anyone decide they needed a moment of fresh air as he had. the pub was crowded, and muggy, and tense, and if it were not for appearances sake, isaiah would have left by now----the idea that others would assume him callous was ridiculous, but people, when frightened, had a tendency to err towards the ridiculous. and nothing frightened a normally rational person into irrationality quite so quickly as threatening their children. “brent,” isaiah spoke as the man entered the alley---as if isaiah’s thoughts had summoned him. “have you been to see beau?” of course he had, isaiah had no doubt----if isaiah were in his shoes, it’s precisely where he would have gone. “how is he?”

He doesn’t like this. Not one bit. Louis Weasley is not unfamiliar to restlessness – he barely sits still, you see, and when he does he gets agitated – but when it hits him, his feet immediately start tapping the floor and his thumbs start fiddling. With an apple cider in front of his nose and a feeling of worry around him, he’s tempted to speak of the weather or what book he’s supposed to read for school that he is not reading. In stead, he finishes his cider and asks his neighbour, “Want a refill? My treat.”

hermione pulled the door closed behind her quietly, hoping to refrain from drawing attention to the fact that she’d returned. it’d been a long night of back-and-forth; and while she could have delegated the role to someone else, she felt better having been to the site of the train malfunction herself---to have seen the students, safe (shaken, of course, but safe) with her own eyes, before coming back here to coordinate with a few of the other department heads and the minister himself. but first, a drink----nothing that would impair her, just something to warm her up and keep her mind sharp. "i’ll just have some tea, then, if you’re offering.” she told louis with a warm smile.

“ooo, zach?” celeste plopped onto the arm rest, intercepting the butterbeer before waving the first year off for another. she surely couldn’t miss the opportunity to tease valeria before even setting foot in hogwarts. “is this zach hot? does alexander have more competition?” cel asked with a cheeky smile as she handed the frosty butterbeer over to her friend once the younger year had returned with her own. she popped the top and took a delicate sip, “knowing you, i bet he’s the cutest. so who’s the lucky guy to have actually won our precious valeria’s heart, hm? who wins?”

“do i have any friends who aren’t?” val countered, shifting her legs over on the ottoman she’d transfigured and motioning for celeste to sit, and continued, “zach is probably one of the most fabulous people you’ve ever had the misfortune to not meet----but he’s just a friend. i’m a one-man woman, now, haven’t you heard? besides,” she shrugged, taking a sip before continuing her thought, “not even the second coming of merlin himself could convince me to put myself in nadia zabini’s crosshairs---his older sister. remember her? yikes. it’d be like two jacs for the price of one.” and while she loved jacqueline, one was plenty for her.

“Hey, I’ll get it,” Gage spoke to the young student who stood unsure of how to act at the request. Ushering the first year in question back toward the chaperones with a pat to his shoulder, Gage took it upon himself to go to the cooler and grab Valeria a butterbeer. He was diplomatic as a Prefect, passing the bottle to the Gryffindor. “I know it only contains a minuscule amount, but we probably shoudln’t let the first years near butterbeer before they are even of age to go to Hogsmeade.”

val rolled her eyes as the first year was practically rushed away from her, a pout forming on her lips, “are you planning to play waiter to me all night, hamilton?” she waved her hand dismissively, though she did take the offered bottle, “i wasn’t going to give them any, merlin, keep your boxer briefs on, please---think of the children.”

Annie: We're okay!!! They had the house elves bring us soup and sandwiches, and between the aurors and the professors there's nothing to fear. 😘 It's just like a field trip, is what Dex said they're called.

Annie: I just feel for the first years, some of them are very upset.

“I really like the concept of camping,” Mallory begins, huddled in her cloak with a sour expression on her face. Truth is, she is scared, and she’s distracting herself from her fear with complaining. It’s quite effective. “But in reality – especially in this country – it’s just … cold. And wet. And muddy.” She pauses, damning herself for leaving all her jumpers in her trunk. “Just not my scene, I guess.”

“camping is a lot more fun when you’re in a cabin with a lake nearby, not stuck in tents with the entirety of the school right outside your door.” leda said with a shrug, looking up from where she’d been doing her nails, “still, beats muggle camping by a mile----did you know muggles actually sleep on the ground when they camp? with just a little bit of----cloth, or something, between them and ground? how is that fun? anyway, sit, sit----we can take bets on which prefect snaps first.”

The train had skidded to a stop way too early and much too roughly for Molly’s liking. She’d already dreaded starting the year with such a secret but for her mother and father’s sake she had at least committed to attending school at least until December – then go her separate way. As if it were punishment her first night, which should have been in a four poster, would be spent sleeping in a tent. But if it was up to her, she’d at least get some peace and quiet Molly sighed as she glanced around at her busy peers sitting up their tents, making note of busy professors before stepping away from the group. Perhaps she should have been more unsettled than frustrated but she wasn’t about to spend the whole day listening to younger years whine. She had made it to the door, hesitating before pushing at one of the doors when the crunch of rocks sounded behind her. She paused once the door was opened just enough for her to fit through before turning to hop up. “Look, if there was anything dangerous they would have found it already and besides I…forgot something.” 

he’d been up late the night before----an impromptu chess tournament at the leaky cauldron---and had been planning to use the ride to hogwarts to catch up on some much needed rest, and alone time. but when the train stalled and they were carted off to the nearby woods----because hanging out in the woods in the middle of nowhere was a great idea----panicked first years and all, he’d given up much hope of a quiet night. until, that is, he realized there was one place no one else would be---the train itself. he’d figured he’d just lock himself in one of the compartments (maybe after raiding the snack trolley) and sleep until the all clear was given (and he knew it would be; causing mayhem was one thing, but the death eaters had kids of their own on the train, kids they weren’t going to endanger). however, it seemed someone else had the same idea----and thought he was intruding. “look,” he held his hands up in a gesture of innocence, “i’m not here to play babysitter----i just want some peace and quiet, and looks like we both had the same idea of where to get it. so,” he gestured, “ladies first?”

“now, come on, tommen,” valeria spoke as she found the wayward first year, “i already told you----the troll you’ll be fighting for the sorting will take into account your below average height.” as the first year in question scurried away, val turned to draco with a beaming smile, “sorry about that, professor.... say, you’re looking pretty sharp,” her smile turned sly, then, head cocked to the side as she asked, “have you been working out this summer? trying to spice things up with the missus? i hear cardio does wonders for men of your age.” looking as innocent as valeria carrow ever could, she held out a bottle, “butterbeer?”

“thank god zach introduced me to the wonders of glamping, because sleeping on a cot in these ministry provided tents? no thanks.” val sipped the last of her butterbeer, leaning back on the plush recliner in front of her tent. “hey, you! first year!” val snapped her fingers, beckoning the boy in question over to her, “will you go over to that cooler and grab me another butterbeer? what house do you want to be in? you wanna be in gryffindor?----i’ll put in a good word.”

they were tired and off their usual mental game, so it took them a second to realize that yeah, they were something of a public figure by association with their family and yeah, any ministry worker could peg them from a mile away. they’d never quite become used to their notoriety – mostly because it was unearned, and that was annoying in and of itself. dad could always make a joke out of it, mum never seemed to lose her eternal cool in public. but ro never took after their grace and always grew uncomfortable with stares, leering, when complete strangers knew their last name as easy as they knew the days of the week. 

ro shot their conversational partner a Look but said nothing, knowing that their childish sass (a trait that wasn’t easily suppressed when one’s father was a certain ronald weasley) could take a backseat for the time being. it didn’t escape them, exhausted though they may be, that this building was the place where their mother was in close enough proximity to have a hair plucked for polyjuice; that dolohov chose their uncle’s place of work to go in for the kill. “she’s a busy woman. you work for her, then?” 

this time, isaiah really did have to suppress a smile. they had potential, he’d give them that. underhanded and implicit in their dismissal of him, it might have stung his pride; but he’d married adele rosier, and when it came to the perfect execution of a contemptuous implication hidden in an innocent remark, this rose weasley was an amateur where his wife was a master. “unfortunately, no,” he brushed a bit of nonexistent lint off of his plum robes, a signal to anyone even partially familiar with their world exactly where he worked, though he drove the remark home when he said, “though we have brought her in on occasions where her expert testimony was needed.” the implication was clear, though it would be near impossible to prove he’d meant it as anything other than fact: hermione granger did not summon members of the wizengamot—-they summoned her.
