There are many environmental effects of e-waste.
Many electronics have cadmium. Cadmium can cause damage to the lungs and can even cause death if breathed in.
There is also lead in most. Lead can cause blood anemia, kidney damage, severe stomachaches, muscle weakness, brain damage, and can attack the nervous system in children if swallowed. In adults, it attacks the nervous system.
Many batteries contain lead, nickel, cadmium, silver, lithium, and other toxic materials.
Many policies, such as reusing old electronics, are beginning to be made by the government for solutions to the hazard of the environment.
The European Union banned e-waste from landfills in the 90's. They also have laws which give manufacturers the responsibility for disposing the waste created safely.
E-waste is the fastest growing municipal waste stream in the U.S.Between 2000 and 2006, e-waste generation increased by 52% (U.S. EPA 2007)
