When I was a kid, back before tablets or smartphones were a thing, I always had a notebook and pen on me. I was always writing stories. And even though nobody else saw what I was writing, I was often praised by adults I didn’t even know for being so studious. I was complimented up and down for being a quiet kid who was doing something they perceived as thoughtful and intelligent.

Today, tablets and smartphones are a thing. Everyone always has some sort of screen on hand. The difference is that, rather than being praised, people–especially young people–are criticized for always being on a tablet or a phone, even though nobody else sees what they are writing. People are criticized up and down for doing something others perceive as frivolous and lesser than what people were doing 20 years ago.

Today, rather than a notebook, I carry my smartphone everywhere I go. I proofread my manuscripts and I email myself ideas, and sometimes I even write entire scenes painstakingly in this fashion. I am the same person I have always been, honing the same passion I have always had. My brain hasn’t changed. What I’m doing hasn’t changed. The fact that others around me are not privy to what I’m doing hasn’t changed. The only thing–the ONLY thing–that has changed, is that today people make a blanket judgment about what others are doing. The problem isn’t screens. It isn’t the people staring at the screens. It’s people who are judging the way others are spending their time, because they have not found something suitable enough to do with their own.
