Introduction

Welcome! We will be posting underrated vocal synth songs every week.

We used to be part of @daily-underrated-vocaloid, but stopped posting on that blog due to burnout (from us and the translator). But we are back! Kind of. There will be some changes of course, so that it's more sustainable in the long run!

First off, we aren't going to set specific numbers or standards for when a song is "underrated." There are barely viewed songs from popular artists, for example, that we feel are underrated that didn't fit our past "criteria." Also, songs that have a lot of effort and talent in their music and video that just barely met the threshold but still felt very underrated. So we are just going to go by vibes. (Don't worry, we won't be posting stuff like Mesmerizer or Triple Baka on here though, unless it's posted before it becomes popular.)

Second, while we plan on posting a song at least once every week, we might also post about specific creators or artists we feel are underrated that have vocal synth related work.

Third, since we only know English, we might post underrated vocal synth songs that aren't human translated into English, and may not be able to give proper content warnings for those. We will add that there isn't a current human English translation though, and still comment on the instrumental and song video.

Hopefully, with these changes in place, this blog will probably be more sustainable than the last one. We already have a big list of songs we want to share on here!

Also, our main blogs are @queer-vocaloid-enthusiasts and @vocaqueers. (Likes and follows will be from the first one, but the second one is the one we actually make posts on. It's more personal, though.)

Please feel free to send us asks suggesting songs! No rules for suggestions anymore either, though we may turn any down for whatever reason.

Also, if you created/worked on a song that is on this blog and want us to remove it, please reach out and let us know, and the post will be deleted ASAP.

This week, we'd like to cover a super underrated creator!

Shinakizou

We aren't the best at telling what genre songs are, but I think most of their work falls under some kind of experimental rock.

This producer has been posting songs for at least 9 years on youtube. Usually even smaller creators who have posted this long get at least one semi-viral song, but somehow shinakizou has not, and we will not stand for that!!! So here is a little showcase of some of their songs, and our thoughts on them.

This song has an english translation in the description. Featuring the (very underrated) Vocaloid LUMi, we interpret this song to be about a mutually toxic relationship where both sides are trying their best but miscommunications are making it painful. We really like the drums in this song, especially with headphones.

(Warning: flashing)

This is shinakizou's most recent song, featuring the Cevio COKO. There isn't a translation for this song, so we can't really consider the lyrical meaning in our review. We really enjoy the guitars and drums used in this song, and the way the instruments are panned around makes it even more interesting. The 3D music video is very charming, and I love the visuals of the heart stuck in the crystal. COKO sings very passionately in this song, it feels sad but hopeful.

This isn't a vocal synth song, but I just wanted to point out that this creator also has instrumental tracks! This is the titular song in shinakizou's album "the machine is melancholy," the other songs in the album are also REALLY good! (And super underrated, we are literally the only person that liked a few of the songs in the album.) It deviates a bit from their usual style with their vocal synth song.

BONES.

I absolutely love the BONES.'s art style. Their musical style has the kind of harsh, experimental, almost dissonant kind of tones/synths musical style that we feel like SHOULD have a name as a genre, but we don't know what it is called. I'd say it's similar to producers like SOOOO and R.I.Producer? (If this genre does have a name, please tell me, I love these kinds of songs/aesthetics!) BONES. definitely has their own unique style within this, though! I love the complex lyrics and their way of tuning Len in this song.

The music video for this song is incredible! i love the stylization of the lyrics and all the incredible detailed pixel art. This uses the UTAUs of Gekiyaku and Kazehiki, since they started working on it before they got Vocaloids. I honestly really love the way UTAU voices sound, especially in songs like this. The sort-of-choppy pronunciation makes it more stimmy to me.

This one is very Halloween-y! Breaking it down with the shadows and facing our mortality with this one. There's also a long comment on this song from a trans woman who talks about how this song helped her come out, and it is SO heartwarming and tearjerking. Despite that, this is somehow one of BONES.'s least popular songs on Youtube??? Unacceptable. Please listen to this awesome song about identity.

Also, completely unrelated, but when I went to their carrd for their pronouns and found the link to their "pronoun page," it linked to this unlisted video on their channel. So I just used they/them pronouns to be safe.

Abu-Se-Ken (a.k.a. Abuse)

I love that Abuse sings with Miku in this song! Hearing them sing together makes it even more emotional. In the description, they mention this was made for their 18th birthday, but came out a month late. My personal interpretation is that it's from the point of view of someone dying/dead being happy for their child being born and wanting them to live. It is a very emotional song regardless of interpretation though! I would describe the style, but I don't have the words for it. It is part of their album Karma Adharma. There is an English translation in the description, and an alternative English translation in the comments as well!

Content Warning: Flashing, High Pitched Sounds, Alcoholism, Bloody Death

I'm pretty sure the main voice for this one is Kagamine Len, but I am unsure about the other voice(s) because they're so distorted. (If anyone knows, please let us know!) The animation for this music video is incredible, and the way the song changes so drastically is very exciting. It really captures how substance abuse like alcoholism can make you lose grip on reality almost entirely. I believe it is also implied the main character is homeless? The part with the bird and the breathing at about 2:25 is my favorite part, personally. There is an English translation in the comments!

This one actually has Kagamine Rin in the video as well! The song feels a lot sillier than the other ones, but still covers dark topics like drug dealing. I love the use of Rin's growl in this song as well, I feel like it fits the vibe a lot. The animation for the dancing is really cute! There are multiple English translations in the comments.

Today I'd like to share my favorite song featuring the Vocaloid asa! (We can't read Japanese, so we do not have any comments on the lyrics.) This song is hauntingly beautiful. The visuals of the skeleton-like model made of presumably scrap metal with the animation on top blends so well. Also, the vibe really fits asa's character. (For those who don't know since asa isn't very popular, they're a nonbinary ghost Vocaloid that is sometimes seen in liminal spaces softly singing. They come free with Vocaloid 6!)

Even though we don't know Japanese, we genuinely really love this song. It's one of those songs that's super calming in a dark and stimulating way, and makes you feel as if you are in a trance. We have been listening to it ever since it came out about 3 months ago. k0yuk! is a very incredible producer.

Starting the blog off strong with a SUPER underrated series!

The Pathos Project

This is an in-progress Vocaloid ARG song series, that features all the "Main 6" Cryptonloids! It really has the vibe of 2000s - early 2010s age creepy Vocaloid music, if you know what I mean. The art is stunning, and the story is very compelling, I'm so excited for what Vega-P cooks up next! I think they make posts on their Youtube channel for the ARG elements, though we are admittedly not the best at playing ARGs, we always end up being late. Though, while the next song might be a while away, definitely subscribe to their youtube channel if you like them, cuz they post lots of awesome songs! (and maybe you wont miss the ARG stuff like we do lol)
