"It's a simple 'yes' or 'no'- just answer the bloody question."
"I suppose. It would be too hard to fix it though… Do things get worse during the summer?"
"It's the summer weekends, mostly. Music festivals, art shows, sports. Most officers would be tied up working those events- and completely knackered when they got back in after. Plus it's tourist season."
"Be honest please."

"Bluntly then. I want to go back, but I can’t, can I? Even if they did find no evidence that I was involved in any way, that hasn’t stopped people thinking that. Has it?"
He nodded slowly, wishing he could do something—anything—to change the state of mind she was in. He felt betrayed by her wife because she cheated on him and allowed a murder to go free. But he couldn’t imagine what he would have felt if his wife had been a killer of a young boy. It was really complicated, almost impossible to understand. He just couldn’t stop about it. “I’m so sorry. I wish it was all just a bad dream,” he said, rubbing his face.Â
Ellie nodded, looking back down at her hands folded on her lap. She felt numb still, honestly. Still unsure if she completely accepted everything that had happened in the past few months as truth. But he had been convicted, admitted to what he'd done, and was now serving his time in a prison that she knew she'd never visit. At least the divorce had been straightforward. "S-so what are you doing these days?" she asked, attempting to change the subject. "Anything interesting?"

She stood, collar of her overcoat turned up against the chill airr coming off the sea, and stared at the dead body in front of her on the sand. “Yeah, he was one of mine.” SHIELD agents in deep cover were being found dead everywhere; the price of the freedom of information.
Ellie was uneasy standing on the beach, but with the unexplained increase in murders around the globe, she'd been asked to come back for a few weeks while everything got sorted and investigated. At least it wasn't Broadchurch's beach- she wasn't ready to go back there yet, emergency or not.Â
"What was his name?" she asked, notebook open. "We've got to identify the body- notify family, all that."
"Oh that’s not too bad… I mean it’s only salt. It’s not like she did anything really life threatening. It just made the coffees taste bad."
"When the entire station basically lives off coffee and tea, it does get a bit out of hand. At least the summer hols hadn't started yet. But that's small towns for you."
((Sorry about disappearing for a month- school got hectic and I'm still trying to work on Ellie as a muse so I didn't have the time. But I'm back now and hoping to be on here more regularly :) ))
"You would think, but I think it’s more of a social experiment? See how many people try to use it? Not sure what the person was thinking, but as you said, to each their own." Offering her hand in response to the woman telling River her name, she smiled. "It’s a pleasure to meet you."
"I certainly hope it's actually wired up so no one tries to call for help and gets a dead line," Ellie said. "Social experiment's fine and good, but if anyone gets hurt..." She shook her head, unsure what she thought of the whole thing. Taking the other woman's hand and shaking it she continued, "So do you live in London then?"
She didn’t have to look so shocked. This was the kind of thing people do when they’re friends, right? He let out a long breath, looking away for a moment as he crossed his arms, looking slightly less awkward than he felt.
"Of course. Thursday night then?"
"Yeah, yeah, that's perfect actually. Tom's off school for the week so we won't have to rush home or anything. Should warn you, though, that he's become sort of picky. Not sure why," she said, still touched that Alec would do this sort of thing. Sure they'd been through quite a bit, but he'd still never quite struck her as the cooking type.Â
"Nice to meet you, Ellie Miller. I’m the Doctor." Yeah, she definitely thought he was crazy now. He should really learn not to mess with people when they had no idea what he was talking about.
"Doctor what, exactly?" she asked, entirely unsure as to why she was even still speaking to this man. He seemed harmless enough, but there was a certain sort of... madness about him that Ellie couldn't exactly pinpoint weather it was good or bad.
"Nah, good bit of nostalgia. Think it’s just temporary though, heard something about traveling with it." Oh how right she was, but how sneaky she was about it. River was proud of herself. “Anyway, I’m Melody. Pleasure you meet you…?”
"Sort of like a touring museum exhibit then? To each their own, I suppose but you'd think there might be a bit more than just that," she said with a small shrug, making a mental note to look up any kid's museums for Tom and Fred to go to some weekend. "I'm Ellie. Nice to meet you too, Melody."

She couldn’t be stopped. There was a wide smile on her face, brighter than ever, and, excitedly, Rose turned to the nearest person to remark, happily, “The sun’s out! Cor, it’s about time, it’s always so dark.” With an open and earnest expression on her face, she barrelled on. “Is it summer, then?”
"Well, yes- yes I suppose it is," Ellie said, a bit taken aback by the young woman's enthusiasm. Sure she was happy to see a bit of sunshine here finally- London was dreadfully grey and dreary most of the time compared to Broadchurch- but she wasn't about to go bounding down the walk or anything. "Tom, sweetie, please put your helmet on. Thank you!" she called to her son who was enjoying the day with a bit of time on his skateboard.
❝I should inform you that what you’re about t’ do is a very stupid idea.❞
"...I'm just about to eat my lunch."
"Be honest please."

"Bluntly then. I want to go back, but I can’t, can I? Even if they did find no evidence that I was involved in any way, that hasn’t stopped people thinking that. Has it?"
"Maybe try and find some small town somewhere? I can only imagine how hard it is, Ellie, but…" He sighed, and shrugged. Broadchurch was the kind of city that could destroy somehow, and for what he knew, the Latimer weren’t over the fact that one of their best friends had killed their son. Which was normal, of course. And including Ellie was horrible, but human. Alec didn’t say it out loud though, because he could easily see how much his friend—cause yes, she was his friend—was suffering. "I’m so sorry, I wish you could at least be home after all that. But you know, changing—can be great for you, too."Â
"Well I can't now- not with Tom finally settling in. Wouldn't be fair to him. Maybe we'll take a holiday somewhere small in a few months, I don't know." Ellie's eyes wandered to look out at the towering buildings that made up the landscape of her new home. Sometimes when she woke restless in the middle of the night they almost reminded her of the cliffs near the beach. She couldn't quite decide if that was a good or bad thing given the circumstances. "Oh, I know. It's just taking a bit of getting used to and all. One end of the spectrum to the other."
"Oh… I don’t think anyone would want to do that at all. It’s only the kids that really try and pull any pranks."
"Hm, you'd be surprised. Last year the local CS replaced the sugar with salt. Never saw her as the pranking type but she was laughing for days after."
"If anyone tries to pull a prank on me today, you will get a cup of hot coffee in your face."
