Zayn gets ready backstage for the show, revealing one of his many tattoos. “They all have their own meaning,” he says. “They all represent something, or did at some point!”

"I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to comic books," Zayn explains, while showing me his famous Zap tattoo. "I’ve always had a bit of fascination with cartoons and comics."

"To be honest, not many of them actually have any meaning," Louis says of his tattoos. "I just like to look at them. I started with a silly stick man. And then I like skateboarding, so that’s why I got that one. This is for the world tour. This ‘Oops’ is because I didn’t like this line here, so I was like, ‘Oops!’ I love tea, and that’s a compass pointing to home.

"Some of them I just like," Harry says of his tattoos. "There are a few that mean something to me. We get to meet a lot cool people and they say stuff that sticks. Some tattoos are just reminders of friends I’ve made—whether it be lifelong friends or those I’ve made in the past four years. It’s nice to have people impact you in different ways."

"If you’ve already got a tattoo, why not get another one?" Harry says. "Especially if it’s one little thing that reminds you of someone else." In 9 months, he’s gotten more than 10 tattoos.

Niall, however, is the lone band member who doesn’t have any ink. “Niall goes through stages,” explained Louis. “Sometimes he’s like, ‘Aw yeah, I might get one!’ Then sometimes he’s like ‘I don’t know.’ I would be surprised if he did it.”
