Not only that it keeps him in the audience’s mind, shows how much influence has on the world, but I think it could also be interpreted as Frieren, an almost immortal being, finally became aware of the passage of time or numbering her days by how long it has been since she lost him.

I didn’t look up what the anime was about before I watched it (I was like oh okay a chill one let’s go) and I was struck by this detail when I realised. Every time the caption says this I feel the same. Time feels meaningless after someone you love passes away. I used to feel numb for so long and then lesser as the time goes on. This way is also genius because if she didn’t keep track it could be a century and she wouldn’t know. Grief swallows your mind’s calendar till you wake up one day and realise it.
