Cwtch /kʊtʃ/ is a Welsh word for a hug, cuddle or snuggle. But more than that, there is an element of intimacy, earnestness and ownership in cwtch that the closest English equivalents ”hug”, ”cuddle” and “snuggle” lack. 

A cwtch creates a private safe place in a room or in two peoples hearts. It is a strong affection made manifest and can apply to lovers, friends, or a parent and child. Cwtch is snuggling and cuddling and loving and protecting and safeguarding and claiming, all rolled into one.

Cwtch is the feeling of a safe place or home that the hug, cuddle or snuggle gives. If you give someone a cwtch, you’re giving them a “safe place”.

Toby ran until Vance brought them to a walking pace, and luckily he couldn't hear the tattoo gun over the sound of them walking anymore. He smiled when Vance mentioned that they would stay at the parlor this time, choosing to ignore the dropping on his shoes part. It was still possible, even while sitting. Ice cream had a mind of its own, it went where it wanted. Most of the time, that meant his tummy, where it would sit, cold and satisfied. "Yeah! And I'll try to guess it this time." Changing flavors meant a mystery, and Toby did enjoy figuring out mysteries as much as he enjoyed learning about history. Somehow, it went hand in hand for him. He swung the locked hands while they walked. Silence could be dangerous when you were young enough to be curious. "Hey Vance, why do people get tattoos? It just sounds like it hurts. I don't know why people would do something that hurts them."

Toby tried to straighten his hair, looking a bit annoyed, but he wasn’t really. There wasn’t any harm by it, but he did have a difficult time getting his hair to cooperate most days. Once it would all lay flat, it was like wearing a new shirt- it felt nice. Oh well, guess his hair was going to be a mess today. He squeezed Vance’s hand and looked ahead. He heard the tattoo gun start and he answered the question. “The long way. But fast away from them.” He pulled Vance’s hand and tried running, knowing that the older of the two of them could probably really outrun him, but he needed to make a point here. Hearing the pain was not something he wanted to stick around for. “And I want a really big one this time, in a cone! I won’t spill it!” Because last time, he had spilt his ice cream on the walk home. That wasn’t his fault, that guy had put all of the ice cream on one side and made it heavy, instead of in the middle like you were supposed to.

Maybe it had been a bit strange the way that Toby had been ushered out of the house, but when he heard that the next customer wanted to get a tattoo in an unmentionable area, he was all too eager to leave. Really, it was a bit weird that people even wanted to get things put there. From what he heard, it was also really painful. Actually, Toby was still wondering why people decided to go through so much pain for something like that. Why not just get a picture drawn for you or something? 

Of course, historically, it had other importance, but sometimes when people asked for dumb things he didn't really understand. Or why Rem was so willing to help them with it. But Vance said he would take him for ice cream while the tattoo was going on, so who was he to argue? He didn't have to listen to someone yell about how much pain they were in, and he had free ice cream coming. 

Some free time with Vance was nice too. Even though they saw each other every day, getting time with either of one his adopted fathers was kind of nice. Though he really enjoyed his conversations with the family dog, it was nice to have someone talk back once in a while. Still, they had already decided to read together later, so he couldn't break that promise. Dogs were very forgiving creatures, but Toby also didn't want to hurt his feelings by making it seem like he forgot.
