Adelaide wasn't sure she was ready for her first day. She spent years preparing, studying medicine and faking confidence, but starting her rotations was something else entirely. Not only would this be her first rotation, she was also stuck with the most intense and fast-paced speciality.
A lot of med students turned their noses down at emergency medicine, believing the specialty is less about science and more about a prayer to whatever god might be out there with a scalpel in hand. They dreamed of surgery, something like plastics that made money or neuro where they get praised for their brilliant discoveries they could put their name on.
She knew better.
Emergency medicine was fast-paced, with more room for error than she personally enjoyed. She was hoping for OBGYN or Psych for her first rotation. Something controlled to ease her in to being an actual practicing doctor. Instead, she was getting thrown into the belly of the beast.
She was waiting at the central nurse's station, hair in a dutch braid down her back, her long sleeve pale yellow shirt under her black scrubs. The top was tucked in, her student doctor ID hooked to her front pocket in her scrub bottoms.
She was at least ten minutes early, twisting her hands as she looked at the board above her, pretending as if she knew what she was doing. Like she was supposed to be there.
A man slid in beside her, tall with dark curly hair and grey scrubs. His features were sharp, matched with a soft smile. "First day?" He asked.
"That obvious?"
"Oh, totally not. You look as chill as a senior resident," he shrugged and she let out a giggle with a shake of her head.
"Such a liar," she grumbled. "What about you?"
"First day as a nurse here. I'm Mateo," he greeted, reaching his hand out for her. She told him her name, shaking the outstretched hand.
"I see they've started letting anyone into this place." The voice came from behind her, the student doctor turning. She had to crane her neck to see his face, but based on the voice and attitude, she already knew who it was.
"Marshall," she greeted him, putting on her best fake smile. She met his hazel eyes, his thin lips curving into a smirk. "Good to see you."
"Wish I could say the same, but you're kind of an embarrassment to medicine," he grumbled.
"That is a lot of energy for day one," Mateo mumbled, but Tyler Marshall was a super human with super hearing and an inability to back down. She didn't think his gargantuan ego would let him.
"Oh, she has been my problem for a whole year." The correction could've been seen as humorous, but she knew better. He had been like this since they met her second year of med school. Despite being a year ahead, he was taking pharmacology at the same time she was.
When he walked in with his stupidly perfect curly blond hair and polished button-up, she knew he was going to be a problem. Then he sat right beside her. Then they had to do a research presentation together. She had ended up in a car crash right before their presentation, leaving him to do it alone, and he never quite forgave her.
She didn't think it was her fault. She actually would've rather not dealt with a broken arm and an emergency surgery to remove her spleen, let alone her best friend dying, but that didn't seem to matter much to Marshall.
"He'll get over it." She shrugged it off to Mateo, not wanting to get into a fight at 6:59 in the morning. She was saved by the charge nurse, a short, redheaded, older woman in grey scrubs who greeted them with a smile.
"You must be our new med students and nurses. Welcome to the Pitt! I'm Lena, I'm the night charge nurse. My replacement, Dana, will be here in a moment to help get you guys aquatinted with the staff and the space. Until then, hang out and if you have any questions, ask me or anyone else in scrubs."
Adelaide nodded along, smiling back at the surprisingly calm woman despite the chaos around them. They didn't have to wait long, before another tall man (why the hell was everyone in the hospital so tall?) with a greying beard and receding hairline moved toward the nurses station, a few residents in toe.
"Good morning. Welcome to the Pitt. I'm Dr. Michael Robinavitch, but you can call me Robby. I'm the chief attending physician in the emergency medicine department," he greeted them, looking around with a scowl. "Where the hell is Dana?"
"Not a clue." The night nurse shrugged, grabbing her phone and walking towards the automatic doors to what she assumed to be the ambulance bay. "I'll call her."
"I'm here!" Another woman called out from the lockers, her blonde hair thrown into a messy low bun. Her accent was thick, but something Addie couldn't quite place yet. She was still new to being north of the Mason Dixon line. "Sorry, almost burnt the house down this morning. Had to clear the smoke before I left."
"What the hell happened?" One of the residents, another tall man with baby blue eyes and messy, dark hair, asked.
"You don't wanna know, kid. This the new blood?" She rounded the counter, standing on the opposite side from the others and using her ID to log onto the computer in the middle.
"Yup. As I was saying, while I may be in charge by title, Dana is our charge nurse. She really runs the show around here. She tells you something, you listen," he explained, the blonde shooting them a wink. "Behind me are some of our residents. If you get a patient and make a plan to treat, you always present to a senior resident or an attending first.
"While you all were getting situated, we already did hand off with night shift, but starting tomorrow, you will join us for rounds every morning. Now, behind me are some other incredibly important people. Dr. Morales and Dr. Sommers are your senior residents. You present to them or me before doing anything. You do not treat patients without a resident present. You are not a doctor yet, you're still students. That doesn't mean you don't know anything, just that it's important to ask questions and for help when you need to.
"Other residents include Dr. Harper, R3, Dr. Collins and Dr. Langdon, R2s, and our intern Dr. Atwal. Find them or me before doing any more than taking a medical history. What are your names and years?"
"Tyler Marshall, MS4," Marshall answered, seeming to stand up even straighter than before.
"Adelaide Solace, MS3," she spoke after him, head as high as she could hold it.
"Robby, we've got an MVA in 3," Dana interrupted, the attending nodding along. "Control says three are headed our way."
"Shit, good morning, I guess. Okay, let's get you guys on your first trauma. For now, you watch. As the day goes on and you get more comfortable, we might let you do some things," he affirmed them, turning to the charge nurse. "What's open?"
"Trauma 1, 2 and the other can go to central 6."
Robby paused on his way to the trauma room, taking a look at his new med students and Mateo. "Dana, I think I have one of your ducklings."
"Oh. Forgot I was gettin' one of those today. Baby nurse stay with me, doctors go with Robby."
"Alright, Langdon, med students, with me in 1. Morales, Collins, Harper in 2. Sommers and Atwal in 6." Everyone moved quickly, the patients coming in hot from the ambulance bay.
"Shauna Morris, 24. Passenger seat. Tachy, systolic of 80, GCS of 7," the EMT informed them as they slid in the doors. Robby tossed a surgical gown her way, Adelaide scrambling to pull it on. "Penetrative glass from the windshield through the left upper abdomen, possible puncture to the spleen based on excessive blood loss."
"Alright, trauma 1. Med students, what are we worried about first?"
"GCS of 7 means a potential for compromised airway, other concerns are severe blood loss, potential ruptured spleen due to penetrative wound positioning," she answered through a tight throat. She had seen this before.
"What do we need?" Langdon asked, looking to the med students again. She had finished tying up the gown, sliding on her glasses and gloves.
"We need to intubate, stabilize the glass, start one unit of o-neg wide open, FAST, and then a CT with contrast to confirm spleen damage," she continued, Marshall not getting a chance to cut in.
"Alright, you heard the student doctor," Langdon called out, ordering people around.
"I'm going to check on the others. Page me if something changes," Robby ordered the resident, who nodded along.
"Alright, Ms. MS3, you ever intubated someone before?" Langdon asked, a glint of mischief in his eyes with a matching smirk. Oh fuck, was all she could think.
"No, I-uh-this is my first rotation. I've never done it on a real person." Please don't let this patient be my first intubation, is what she really wanted to say. She did not want to intubate.
She had been this patient.
She looked up, after what felt like a millisecond, but somehow Dr. Langdon was already in front of her, Rigid GlideScope in hand. "You got this," he assured her, pulling her to the head of the patient.
She could feel Marshall's eyes on her, but she didn't dare look up. She was already stressed enough, the last thing she needed was his stupid fucking glare messing her up.
"Alright, enter to the right of the mouth, pushing the tongue to the left," Langdon instructed, hovering over her right shoulder. She did as instructed, inserting the scope and beginning to push further.
"I see the epiglottis," she announced, looking up at the screen showing where the scope was going to check her positioning.
"Good. Look back down," he instructed her. "Place the tip at the vallecula, apply a little pressure, but not too much. Good, back up at the screen. Perfect view of the cords. Alright, tube goes in."
She did as instructed, taking the tube he had ready for her. She slowly began inserting the tube, watching carefully to make sure she didn't hit the cords. She had heard horror stories throughout med school that told her just how bad that would be. While most cases were mild—soreness and scratchy voice—she knew her luck would be paralyzing someones vocal cords.
"Good. Advance through the cords. Alright, cuff is through the cords. Let's inflate," Langdon ordered, the nurse on her left doing so. The nurse moved to bag the patient, the new med student holding her breath.
"Yellow end tidal. Good job, Bambi," Langdon snarked. If she wasn't so busy trying to remember to breathe, she would have rolled her eyes at the comment. Instead, she nodded, too worried about her rushed breakfast coming back up. She needed off that case.
She backed away from the intubation, watching as he talked Marshall through stabilizing the glass in her stomach and the FAST to assess damages that might need to be handled prior to CT.
She didn't remember what else was done, standing quietly off to the side, eyes unfocused and questioning her entire future. Her first day on the job and she couldn't even intubate without having a panic attack.
Before she knew it, Langdon was in front of her again, eyes filled with concern. "Hey, you okay?" he asked, earning a silent nod in return. "Why don't you go take five in the break room, yeah?"
"I'm fine," she tried to assure him, though she knew she failed by how meek it sounded.
"C'mon, I'll show you where it is," he told her, leading her across the emergency department. She got glances, thanks to still being in her PPE, but she barely registered them, trying desperately to breathe.
The staff room was small, a little round table pushed in front of the cork board on the wall in the middle of the room, a kitchenette beside one of the two doors leading in. Dr. Langdon pulled out a chair, motioning her to sit.
"Emergency medicine is a lot and unfortunately, you got a pretty rough start to your day. But I promise you, the chaos gets familiar. It doesn't always feel like you're drowning," he assured her, but something about the way he said it made her feel like she wasn't the only one he was trying to convince.
"How long did it take you to get used to it?" She asked, finally feeling calm enough to untie her gown.
"When I was an MS3, my first rotation was derm, so I thought being a doctor would be so easy. False sense of security," he joked, the woman before him cracking a small smile she couldn't help. "I was overly confident walking in here for my rotation. Got my ass handed to me by Garcia up in surgery pretty similarly to how you just kicked Marshall in the balls when we walked into the trauma room.
"Luckily, I had a second rotation down here later on, after surgery tried to poach me because I was just too good, of course, and I was more comfortable. I was confident again, but I had my footing. I knew where I was, where I was going. You'll get there," he promised, a small smile on his face as he grabbed her PPE from her and threw it in the bin. "You ready to go back out there?"
"Yeah. Thank you, Dr. Langdon." he smiled again, nodding and opening the door for her.
"The good news is it's 7:30, which means we are about to get the morning rush of the living dead," he smirked, Adelaide's face twisting in confusion.
"Every morning, right around 7:30, we get an influx of patients from the nursing home when they do their bed checks. Most of them have advanced directives or DNRs, but every now and then, we work them for a full code."
"That seems inhumane," she shuttered as they returned to the central nurses station.
"Some people just haven't accepted they're going to die yet. We have to respect their wishes either way," he shrugged, making her a little more comfortable with the idea of following the patient's wishes rather than destroying the bodies of the elderly as they died.
"How many are we getting this morning?" he asked Robby who was waiting by the doors of the ambulance bay.
"Four, but you two are headed to help out in triage. We need to be treating and streeting 'em faster or we're never going to catch up," Robby answered, a pit forming in Adelaide's stomach. This wasn't simply being worried about being behind, Marshall told him about her panic attack.
"If this is about earlier, she's fine. It was her first ever patient-"
"And I can't take the risk of her freezing up in another trauma. Stick to triage today and we'll reevaluate tomorrow," Robby interrupted Langdon, who shook his head.
"This is a teaching hospital," Langdon reminded him, Robby nodding along.
"Yeah, and I'm teaching. Sutures, admittance exams, ordering tests. Very important parts of emergency medicine," Robby shrugged, Langdon rolling his eyes.
"Or you're pushing aside a good student because she freaked out on her very first case during her very first rotation," Langdon pointed out.
"It's fine, Dr. Langdon," Adelaide assured him, though she didn't feel that way. She could just hear their voices starting to rise and didn't want to make yet another scene on her first day. "Triage is still important work. Plus, I'm here for a month so there's plenty of time to do other procedures in the future. I'd be happy to help wherever I'm needed."
Robby smirked, looking back at Langdon before turning his gaze down to Adelaide. "They start teaching humility in med school?"
"Have you met Marshall?" she joked back with a scoff, Langdon and Robby letting out surprised chuckles.
"You two are gonna get along great," Robby assured them, grabbing the two by their shoulders and turning them towards the west hallway that led to chairs. "Now, go work triage until I come get you."
Langdon trudged toward chairs, still fuming from the decision, Adelaide following behind with her head held high. "I'm sorry. He shouldn't be putting you in triage just for freaking out on day one. We've all been there," Langdon let the words out of his mouth like they were racing to see how fast he could say them.
"No, he should," she shrugged, Langdon looking down at her as if she told him they should shoot the patients for fun. "I mean, he doesn't know me and can't spend all day keeping an eye on me, he's the head of the ED. We'll try again tomorrow, right?"
Langdon paused his strides, taking in the short, blonde girl before him. She had a small smile he didn't quite believe as it didn't reach her green eyes. He shook his head, walking towards the wards at the front desk. "Keep the hope, cowgirl. This place likes to take it from you."
Langdon grabbed a tablet from beside the ward in charge at the time, who she learned was named Lupe. "We see patients in order of severity. Do you know the triage scale?" He asked her as they neared the door to chairs where everyone was waiting. It was packed, all of the chairs were taken and people were lining the walls, some leaning against the large columns that felt like a laugh in the face of the patients waiting hours for treatment. No wonder they needed more hands at the front door.
"Uh, yeah. 1 is resuscitation, 2 is emergent, 3 is urgent, 4 is less urgent, and 5 is non-urgent," she answered, Langdon nodding along.
"You sure know your stuff, cowgirl," he joked, Adelaide scrunching her eyebrows at the nickname he had already used twice before shrugging it off. "Lupe takes initial concerns and by the description, assigns them a color in the system. The system correlates how severe their concerns are and how long they've been here, then tells us what patient to take next."
"Seems simple enough. What else aren't you telling me?" she asked, a smirk crossing his face.
"As you know, wait times in most emergency departments can be extensive. Some of the people we see today have been waiting here close to eight hours. Tensions are high. It's important to stay aware of all the patients. We don't want someone's condition changing without us noticing, but we also don't want to miss a patient potentially being more aggressive, even violent, due to stress. You'd be surprised at how often it happens," he explained, Adelaide nodding along. She had been warned multiple times by her professors about the rise in violence against healthcare workers in the last few years, especially following COVID.
"Keep an eye on everyone for patient safety and my own safety. Got it. What's next?"
"We get a patient," he answered, opening the doors to the waiting room. He glanced down at the tablet in his hand before looking back up. "Madison Wright!"
Groans echoed throughout the waiting room from patients hopeful they'd be next. Adelaide couldn't really blame them. The waiting room was sweltering with the early July heat, not assisted by the sick or injured bodies packed into the chairs like sardines.
A girl, ten at most, walked up to them slowly, her mother pushing her gently by the shoulders. Her eyes were red, still rimmed with tears from whatever sickness or injury was ailing her. One of the little girl's hands was holding her mother's, the other wrapped in what looked like a wet towel.
"I'm Dr. Langdon," he greeted them, guiding them through the chaos to one of the triage rooms.
"Allison. This is my daughter, and patient, Madi," she replied, shaking his hand.
"This is student Dr. Solace, is it okay if she assists today?" he asked. The mom agreed, Langdon directing the little girl onto the bed. "What brings you in today, Madison?"
"It's Madi," the girl sniffled, Adelaide having to hold back a snicker.
"I'm sorry about that. What brings you in today, Madi?" he asked again, a small smile on his face.
"I hurt my hand," she answered slowly.
"Can you tell me what you hurt your hand with?" he pushed further, Adelaide slightly shocked he was still entertaining the little girl. She was being short and a little combative. He could simply ask her mom for answers, but instead was focusing on the little girl.
"I was doing a science fair project and I dropped my dry ice. I didn't want it to hit the floor, so I caught it," she answered, voice trembling through the words.
"That sounds like it hurt. On a scale of one to ten, one being like a small pinch, ten being the worst thing ever, what's your pain at right now?" He grabbed the rolling stool from the corner of the room, grabbing some gloves as he sat down beside the girl.
"Like a six, I think." She shrugged, wincing as the movement jostled her hand.
"That is pretty high. Mom, has she taken anything for the pain?" he asked, finally looking up at the mother.
"Uh, yeah just some children's motrin," Allison answered, Langdon nodding before turning back to the little girl.
"Alright, we'll just keep you at that for now. I'm gonna take the wrap off your hand to check out your wound. Does that sound okay?" Madi nodded, Langdon slapping on the gloves he grabbed earlier before slowly pulling away the gauze. "Is this just warm water, mom?"
"Yeah, I kind of freaked out when it happened and google said it was a good treatment and to monitor for blisters. They showed up pretty fast, so I thought my best move was coming to the ER," she explained, seeming almost as shaken as her daughter.
"That was a great decision. Dr. Solace, what's your plan?" Adelaide's eyes widened as his blue-eyed stare fixed on her, a comforting nod following as he realized he put her on the spot.
She glanced over his shoulder to see the blisters, some of them already popping. "She needs debridement, so lidocaine for pain and then treatment. Should be done in thirty minutes, so we can send them home with a topical ointment for pain and healing with a check-up in a few days," she answered, keeping her voice steady to not worry the patient or the mother, but internally wanting to scream.
"Perfect assessment, Dr. Solace. I'll show you where to get your tools. Mom, do you mind if we step outside for a moment?" She followed the doctors, encouraging her daughter before doing so. "As Dr. Solace said, we're going to have to remove any dead skin and tissue, as well as potential debris in the wound to ensure it heals as quickly and nicely as possible. We'll numb her hand to ensure she doesn't feel any of it and send her home with something for pain management and a treatment plan."
"Sounds perfect. Thank you both," the mother sighed out, almost as if a weight had lifted off her shoulder.
"Would you be willing to let Dr. Solace do the debridement?" he asked her, Adelaide having to control her face again. This guy just kept throwing her in the deep end and praying she knew how to swim.
"That would be fine with me," Allison answered after some hesitation. Adelaide couldn't blame her, she wasn't sure if she even wanted to do it. Why did she become a doctor anyways?
"Perfect. We'll get what we need and work to get your daughter out of here as quickly as possible," he assured her, the woman thanking them both as they turned around and she returned to her daughter's side.
"You really should warn a girl before you offer her up to do minor surgery on a kid, Dr. Langdon," she muttered at him as they walked to the medicine deposit.
"Most student doctors would kill for this opportunity. What's got you so freaked out about it?" he asked, swiping his card and putting in an order for the lidocaine.
"Um, I don't know, the crash and burn that was this morning?" she reminded him, eyebrows raised with a shake of her head as if it was the obvious assumption.
"You did a perfect intubation." He pulled the same face, giving her an overly sassy shrug with it.
"I meant after that. You know, the freak out, blanking thing that happened directly following that so-called 'perfect' intubation," she corrected him with a roll of her eyes.
"Yes. You freaked out. It happens to most student doctors. I thought you were ready to hop back on the horse, Solace?" He smirked, earning another roll of her eyes.
"It's going to be a painfully long day, isn't it?" she breathed out, earning herself a chuckle.
"Please, you're working with me."
"Oh, so it's going to be excruciating," she groaned out, earning a gentle push on her shoulder followed by a hearty laugh.
"Yeah, you're gonna be fine."
They entered Madi's room again, tray ready with scissors, forceps, and lidocaine. She set the tray on her left, sitting in the rolling chair beside the little girl squirming anxiously in the bed.
"For kids under 12, we only want to do one shot and then test numbness after a minute. We'll do a second if needed, but we want to avoid it if possible," Langdon explained, sitting on a stool on the other side of her tray.
"Alright, Madi. Quick pinch to your hand, alright?" she asked, getting a scared nod from the little girl before entering the needle and pushing the plunger slowly. "Great job. So what was the plan with your dry ice?"
"I'm making a volcano for my science fair project," she answered timidly, watching her hand as it started to tingle.
"They use dry ice for those nowadays?" Langdon asked, eyebrows shooting up. "When I was a kid, we just did baking soda and vinegar."
"We're doing that too. I didn't want to be like the other kids," Madi shrugged again, not wincing in pain like last time.
"Check the wound for numbness," Langdon ordered her, Addie pushing gently on the edge of the wound and not getting a response from Madi. "Alright, you're good to start."
"So are other kids in your grade doing volcanos too, then?" Addie asked the girl as she started slowly pealing some of the dead skin away.
"Yeah. I was going to try to do something else, but by the time I found out Ally was doing a volcano too, we already had all the supplies. Mines just gonna be cooler," Madi answered, the blonde doctor holding back a chuckle. Langdon, however, was not as professional.
"I'm sure she will never steal an idea after that, huh?" he chuckled, Addie shaking her head.
"Dr. Langdon, I think you might be setting a bad example for the patient," she reminded him.
"Oh, don't worry," the mom assured them from the other side of the gurney. "When Madi told me the kid stole her idea, I called a nine-year-old a bitch in front of my nine-year-old daughter."
Addie had to bite her lip to keep from laughing, letting out a long sigh. "My mom definitely had plenty of those moments when I was growing up. She took me to the children's hospital one time because I broke my arm and she called a cancer patient spoiled for going ahead of me," she told them, the two adults chuckling. It was funny in retrospect, since she ended up doing treatment with the same kid a few years later.
"Oh, wow. So that's where you get the attitude from," Langdon muttered, Adelaide's jaw slacking.
"Dr. Langdon, I do not have an attitude! I have spunk." The correction led to another round of giggles, this time including Madi.
"My apologies. I'll use the correct terminology next time," he promised, raising his hands in surrender.
"Good. So, Madi, if you're only nine, that means you're in third grade, right?" she asked the girl as she started picking at the smaller pieces.
"I'm starting fourth grade soon," the little girl answered, Adelaide remembering it was July and the kids likely weren't even in school anymore.
"So, how is your school doing a science fair in the summer?"
"She does a summer science program through her school," Allison answered, Addie's eyes lighting up as she looked up from the wound for a moment.
"That's so cool! I wish my school did that." She returned to the girl's wound, smile still on her face. "I loved all things science as a kid. The science fair was my favorite event."
"Nerd," Langdon coughed out under his breath, earning him a glare from the blonde.
"Well, you don't survive med school where they teach you to save lives without being a bit of a nerd, Dr. Langdon," she grumbled at him, smile still on her face.
"What was your favorite science fair project?" Madi asked, though the young woman wasn't sure quite how to respond. For her, the project made sense and was semi-emotional, but not scary. For the little girl, hearing of a deadly hurricane and what came after might freak her out a bit.
"When I was a little younger than you, my hometown was hit by a really bad storm. It caused a lot of damage and hurt a lot of people, but what caused the worst of the damage was poor management of the city's built-in protections for storms like that one. The city I lived in was basically on the ocean and surrounded by rivers, lakes, and swamps, so flooding was pretty common."
Sometimes she still got choked up talking about it, remembering all the things she saw and the days she went off barely any food or water. No matter how hard she tried, Adelaide could never truly move on from Hurricane Katrina. Luckily, this was not one of those times.
"We had a levy system that helped trap and release storm water to protect us from flooding, but the levies broke during this storm. My mom is an ecologist, or someone who studies the interactions between living things in a given habitat or area. Growing up, she used to take me to the bayou nearby and we would camp out, listen to the bugs and birds, and she would teach me how to identify trees, plants, and animals.
"There's this one tree, the bald cypress. It has these huge roots that kind of look like knees that take in so much water. She would always tell me about good flood plants and how marshy environments, like bayous, sustained storms and rain without flooding as much as they seem like they would. About two years after the storm hit—she helped me with the research—I made these mini ecosystem boxes and showed the difference in how much water is absorbed between a healthy and unhealthy semi-aquatic ecosystem. I ended up going to the state fair," she finished, picking off the last few pieces of dead skin and applying ointment to the girl's hand.
"You did that at nine?" Allison asked, shocked at a young girl having such a thoughtful idea for the fourth-grade science fair.
"Like Dr. Langdon said, I'm a bit of a nerd." She shrugged, everyone chuckling.
"I didn't know you were from New Orleans. Dr. Robby did his residency at Big Charity Hospital," Langdon told her, the girl's eyes going wide.
"I was born in that hospital. They almost reopened it a few years ago, but then Covid hit." She finished the ointment, wrapping the wound and securing it. "Alright, Madi. It looks like we're all done."
"I will send in a nurse with your discharge paperwork and care instructions. You did great, Madi. You too, mom," Langdon told them, the two doctors standing to leave. "Next time, let the dry ice hit the floor, please.
"Oh, and Madi," Addie paused, giving the little girl a cheeky grin. "Kick that girl's ass with your volcano."
The four laughed as the doctors left the room, Langdon bumping his shoulder gently against her's. "See, told you it would be fine."
Would anyone actually read an x oc fic on here? I'm working on a series for Langdon and I feel more comfortable making it an oc fic rather than an x reader. Obviously, I would continue to do one shots and blurbs as x reader, just this series would be x oc.
I need this man in so many concerning ways. Anyways, I love seeing these things and they help me make sure I'm not writing too ooc, so here we go!
I think I'm going to do this for some of my other faves (Abbot, Samira, Santos, Al-Hashimi) so if you would like to see them, please let me know!
Warnings: SMUT (MDNI), Oral, aftercare, degradation, praise, Frank "Munch" Langdon (should be his own warning tbh), fingering, pegging, literally so much more but we would be here for hours.
A = Aftercare (what they’re like after sex)
Frank Langdon is a clingy mother fucker. He wants to be on you or around you all the time, especially after sex. He's a doctor, so obviously he wants you to pee after, drinks some water. If it was a really long, crazy night, he will get whatever the healthiest snack in your kitchen is and make sure you eat it. He is doing all of this while somehow managing to barely take his hands off you.
Once he's sure you're okay, he's pulling you into him, usually you on the bed with him practically smushing you into the mattress.
B = Body part (their favorite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
On him, his hands. He knows what he's doing with them. Between his medical work and years of practice, he knows how good he can make you feel with them. Sometimes, he'll spend hours just fingering you, counting how many times he can make you cum before he rails you into the mattress.
On you, your thighs. He loves burying his head in your pussy, your thighs clenching around his head. He once came in his pants just from you riding his face because not only did he love it, he got to hold onto the soft flesh of your thighs the whole time.
C = Cum (anything to do with cum, basically)
This man is messy. He loves when you cum on his face and he gets to clean it up with his tongue. He loves when you jerk him off just to lick his cum off his stomach. He pulls out and spills all over your stomach when you're fucking raw, loving the sight of you covered in his release.
But if he's being honest, he would love to cum inside you. He doesn't want to risk it, he already has two kids from a failed marriage and is still in pretty early addiction recovery, so getting you pregnant is out of the question. But if you are on the pill? Oh, that man is ravaging you, so fucking ready to cum inside you. And when he does? It wrecks him.
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
He actually loves being pegged by you. He had never tried it before you were together, but now, sometimes, he'll eat you out for hours and then beg you to fuck him until he can't form a single sentence.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
I would say he's pretty experienced. Between the ex-wife, two kids, and the knowledge of anatomy from being a doctor? Yeah, he knows what he's doing and he's pretty experienced.
Before Abby though? Probably not. Langdon gives the vibes of a guy who didn't get hot until med school. He's a nerd obsessed with history, he was not fucking for a while.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
His favorite way to take you is having both of you on your sides, your back to his chest. He'll pull your leg over his hips to give him a better angle. He loves how much access it gives him to your body. Plus, it's less painful than missionary when his back is hurting.
If he's having a good pain day, he'll take you in doggy, loving watching your ass bounce as he fucks you. He also wishes he didn't have a bad back because one of his biggest fantasies is holding you up against the wall while he fucks you.
G = Goofy (are they more serious in the moment? are they humorous? etc.)
He takes fucking you incredibly serious, but he also cannot help his stupid fucking mouth. He will say the funniest shit while deep inside you without even meaning to, the words coming out of his mouth before he's even thought about them. Sometimes you think he does it just to feel you clench around him while you laugh.
H = Hair (how well groomed are they? does the carpet match the drapes? etc.)
Frank Langdon is hairy. I'm talking chest hair, armpit hair, pubic hair. No way that man fully shaves. He trims so it's not uncomfortable for him or you, but that's as far as he'll go.
On you? He couldn't give a fuck less. He'll go down on you even if you think it looks like a jungle. He's just happy to be there.
I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect)
He is a lover boy. He is showing you how much he loves and cares about you all the time, especially in bed. He is obsessed with everything about you, so he's normally incredibly romantic while he's fucking you, though there is a level of desperation that comes with it.
J = Jack off (masturbation headcanon)
He has a pretty high sex drive and will jack off if you two can't be together. You're not feeling it? He's jerking it in the shower to the thought of you. Your schedules are all over the place and you're not home at the same time for a while? He's using your underwear while he does it.
He also doesn't care if you do it. He wants you taken care of, even if he can't do it because he's not there or he's in too much pain. He's come home before while you've been touching yourself and teased you before doing the job himself. You returned the favor a week later.
K = Kink (one or more of their kinks)
Praise - This motherfucker is so desperate for praise it's not even funny. He also loves to give it. He calls you a good girl ever five seconds while he's inside you.
Bondage - he loves tying you up, binding your hands while he fucks you senseless. He also found through your relationship that he loves to be tied up too. He loves when you tie his hands to the headboard and suck him off slowly, making sure to drag it out. It drives him fucking crazy.
Spanking - especially if he's fucking you from behind. He loves watching your ass jiggle.
Dom/sub - He doesn't have control of many things in his life after rehab, so he has it in the bedroom. He usually loves control, but the first time he's willing to let you take the reigns? He's fucking done for.
L = Location (favorite places to do the do)
Frank Langdon is not a picky man. He will take you anywhere and everywhere. At a bar? He's fucking you in the bathroom. Can't quite make it to the bedroom? He's taking you on the tile of the kitchen floor.
His favorite though is the kitchen counter. He's not sure what it is, just something about the domesticity of fucking you in the kitchen you share really gets him going. It's followed by a close second being your bed, a very close third being the bathtub.
M = Motivation (what turns them on, gets them going)
Literally anything. A cute outfit? He's gone. You're being smart? He's gone. You're being cute? He's gone. This man is HORNY and will almost always be ready.
He goes crazy for you in his clothes, though. And if you're good at your job and he gets to see it? He finds competence so hot.
N = No (something they wouldn’t do, turn offs)
He has three big ones: Bodily fluids, degradation, and actually hurting you. With the bodily fluids, he's a doctor. He knows how gross they are and he sees enough of them at work.
For degradation, he gets plenty of it at work, he doesn't need it at home too. He also finds degrading a female partner so wrong. He can be mean to you, but he would never call you a slut or a whore. He thinks they're far too mean, even for his jackass self.
For hurting you, it kind of goes along with degradation. He likes a bit of chocking and spanking, even marking you up. But actually hurting you? Causing blood or real bruising? He would never. Plus, I feel like working as an ER doctor, he's been turned off a lot of the extreme shit because he's seen when it's gone wrong.
O = Oral (preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc.)
Frank Langdon is a fucking munch. He has a pretty mouth and he knows how to use it, so you don't mind, but you can't remember the last time the two of you had sex and he didn't go down on you. He eats you out like a man starved. He definitely has an oral fixation.
He could go with or without. He loves when you give him head, but it's not something he needs and will totally eat you out for hours and never ask for any in return. He loves watching you take him into your mouth, how you look when you're gagging on him.
P = Pace (are they fast and rough? slow and sensual? etc.)
This man is so desperate for you. He is fucking you hard and fast almost every time. But sometimes, he likes to drag it out. You'll still get the hard thrusts, but he'll drag it out. He does it to remind you he loves you and sees you as so much more than sex, but you already know that. He reminds you in other ways all the time like his constant pussy eating.
Q = Quickie (their opinions on quickies, how often, etc.)
He seldom has the time with you he craves thanks to his crazy job, so he is never one to turn down a quickie. In the kitchen when he should be leaving for work or he'll be late? He doesn't care. Your fault for wearing his shirt.
R = Risk (are they game to experiment? do they take risks? etc.)
He is down to try most things, but as previously mentioned, he will not hurt you. He's fine with trying new positions, trying a bit of light choking, many things you suggest, just no hurting and no blood/piss.
S = Stamina (how many rounds can they go for? how long do they last?)
This man has to hold himself back from finishing too fast, but he is almost always ready to go in seconds. He is just so needy and desperate for you he has to hold himself back often. He can go a good two to three rounds inside you before he needs to stop, but he definitely gets you off at least twice before he fully fucks you.
T = Toys (do they own toys? do they use them? on a partner or themselves?)
Has definitely put a vibrator on your clit during missionary, making the experience even better for both of you. He also loves that you have a strap and you have used a vibrator on him a few times. He has no issue with it and thinks it makes your relationship so much more adventurous.
U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)
This man is a fucking tease. He'll edge you, say something throughout the day he knows gets you going. He'll walk around with his grey sweatpants low on his hips, showing off the top of his boxers. He'll pretend to be doing something totally normal and sweetly domestic, just to add in a dirty comment or a perfectly placed kiss.
He can dish it, but he sure as hell can't take it. You tease him for even a second, wearing his clothes, giving his tip kitten licks instead? He's begging and whining like he's at the gates of heaven and you're denying him entrance.
V = Volume (how loud they are, what sounds they make, etc.)
He is a talker. He whines, praises, groans, sometimes full on pornographic moans. He literally can never shut the fuck up. Sometimes he's just mumbling and yapping, practically incoherent noises while he fucks you.
W = Wild card (a random headcanon for the character)
He has definitely cried during sex with you. Not tears from edging, just desperation, love, adoration. Not to get too depressing, but I think he struggled with believing anyone could love him after rehab and his divorce, so the first time the two of you have deep, passionate sex that you both know means more, he's crying into your shoulder and thanking you while he's still inside of you.
X = X-ray (let’s see what’s going on under those clothes)
Frank Langdon is a pretty man. I think his dick matches that. He's long, 6-7 inches maybe, but not overly thick. It also curves a bit to the right.
Y = Yearning (how high is their sex drive?)
You want to fuck? Wake him up! This man is constantly wanting you to the point it's often distracting. Sometimes you have to remind him that you feel it the next day and might need a break. He's just so obsessed with you.
Z = Zzz (how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
Pretty quickly. Normally he's able to take care of you afterwards first, but there was one time, after a really long shift, that he fell asleep right after coming in you and you had to wake him up to clean you both. He apologized for weeks, but you found it really cute that he was so exhausted yet still wanted you.
Synopsis: An upcoming ecology exam has you stressing and studying constantly, but your boyfriend Frank Langdon comes up with a new study method to help you out.
Warnings: SMUT (MDNI), porn kinda plot (bffr no plot), Frank Langdon is a munch agenda, no use of y/n, second person, afab!reader, denial, edging, praise, teasing to the max, Frank is OBSESSED.
This is entirely self-indulgent. I'm currently studying for an ecology exam and can't stop thinking of Frank Langdon, so hurrah!
wc: 1827
At this rate, there is no way you are going to pass this exam. It's only a portion of the ecology class you're taking for your masters program in ecology and evolution at Pitt, but you are sure you will fail.
it's just urban ecology, which seemed easy enough. There's not as many plants and animals that live in cities as in rural or natural areas.
Wrong.
Urban ecosystems are entirely different. While species are typically the same, interactions and biochemical processes completely change. You are convinced you somehow ended up in environmental biochemistry hell.
When your boyfriend comes in from a long shift, you don't even look up. You're going through your Quizlet like a madman, music blasting in your headphones, neck sore and head pounding.
You jump when he comes up behind you, hands gently massaging your shoulders. It doesn't take long for you to recognize it's him, especially since you can feel his pretty, perfect hands on you. You slide your headphones off, gently leaning back in the stool you're perched on at the kitchen counter to rest your head against his shoulder. "Hi," he whispers, placing a kiss on your cheek.
"Hi," you smile tiredly up at him. "Sorry I didn't hear you come in. How was work?"
"Oh, you know. It's the Pitt," he shrugged, though you know there's more. He's home late, three hours after his original end of shift time, so you know something happened. "Sometimes I wonder what the hell I'm even still doing there."
"Helping people. Being an amazing doctor. Plus, no other job or specialty would move fast enough for you. Literally anything else would make you bored as hell," you list off, earning a chuckle from your boyfriend.
He readjusts, arms sliding down to loop around your waist, pulling you flush against his chest and resting his chin on your shoulder. He places a soft kiss on your neck, your cheeks flushing a deep red. "How long have you been at this, baby?" He asks against the skin of your throat.
"I don't even know anymore," you grumble, rubbing at your eyes under your glasses. "I think if I see the words 'carbon sequestration' ever again, I'm gonna fucking throw up."
He laughs into you, moving down to place a kiss on your collarbone, exposed to him by the tank top you usually wear to bed, which you had paired with his boxers. He's used to you stealing his clothes at this point, but that didn't mean it lost the effect it had on him. "Then take a break, baby. Get some food and let's go to bed," he spoke softly, looking up at you as he fully laid his head on your shoulder.
You feel bad. Frank has always been a clingy, touchy person, but you know that after a bad shift, all he wants to do is hold you and sleep or fuck you until he's murmuring nonsense into your ear while you lose count of how many times he's gotten you past the finish line.
But you don't have time. Your exam is at 8 a.m., less than twelve hours away, and you could still barely remember the main four factors that cause an urban heat island. "Uh uh," you mumble, shaking your head softly. "My exam is in the morning and I feel like haven't retained shit. I get natural ecosystems, but once you put people in the mix, it gets way more complicated. Fuck people. Give me back my plants."
He laughs, hearty and full of adoration for how you get when you're tired and overworked. He would always tell you that you think too much and you would argue that was the fun of a masters program. "C'mon. Let's try something new," he stated, gently releasing his arms from around you and grabbing your laptop.
"Hey!" You spit out in protest, quickly following him to the couch. "I kinda need that, Francis."
"Ooh, full naming me, I see. Someone is definitely grumpy," he teases, patting the spot beside him. You slump down into the space, knowing he holds all the power since he has the laptop you desperately need to study. He hands the laptop over, gently running his hand up and down your thigh. "Star all the ones you're struggling with and I'll help you study."
You go through the list, flagging the difficult questions before passing it back to him. He smirks at you like he knows something you don't. Then he gets up and sinks to his knees in front of you, your laptop turned to face him beside you on the couch, his hands gently parting your thighs. "Whatcha doin' down there, Frankie?" You ask him with a nervous laugh.
"I'm helping you study by creating a reward system," he answers calmly, as if it was the obvious answer. "I'm going to ask you questions and if you answer them correctly, you get to cum."
His hands were gently massaging your thighs as he spoke and you have no idea how this is going to work. Your brain already feels like mush from the simple touch on your thighs, you have no idea how you were supposed to function while he touches you. "That sound good, baby? You gonna be good for me?"
He places a kiss on the inside of your thigh, your breath catching as you nod aggressively. "Use your words, baby. This doesn't work if you don't talk to me," he orders you gently, lips moving further up you thigh.
"O-okay, yeah. Sounds-sounds good," you breathe out, barely even thinking as he places a kiss on your clothed core. You let out a whine, feeling his smirk against you. It was borderline embarrassing how quickly he could unravel you even though you had been together for so long.
He runs his tongue along you over the fabric, forcing another whine from you as your hands dig into his scalp. "Alright baby. If you answer this correctly, I'll take these off you. How does an urban heat island effect plant phenology?" He asks the question so casually before he places his lips around your clothed clit, sucking gently.
"It, uh, it-higher temperatures cause earlier-fuck!- earlier spring phenology and delay fall phenology," you stutter out, whining as he pulls away to take his boxers off you.
"Good girl," he mutters, licking at stripe up your now bare core, finishing with a long suck to your clit, pulling a moan out of you. He pulls away again, staring up at you with his stupidly big blue eyes. "What are the components of SUDs?"
"Um, source control, swales and channels, infiltration, wetlands. Um, shit, there's another, isn't there?" you breathe out, struggling with the last one.
"It's okay, baby. You got this. Figure out the last one and I'll add in a finger," he promises, placing soft kisses over you folds as if that would help you think.
"Frankie," you whine out, racking your brain for the last component, but all that's coming to mind was the feeling of Frank's mouth on your cunt. He was so attentive to it, soft kisses and kitten licks. Enough to make it feel appreciated but not enough to make you cum. "Retention and detention!"
The moaned answer you give must be correct because Frank slides his middle finger and gently prods inside of you. "Fuck!" you cry out, desperate for any kind of attention even if it's just one finger.
"You're doing so good, baby. Two more questions and we're done, yeah?" You nod along as his finger curls up, hitting the spongy spot inside you and earning himself another moan. "What are VOCs?"
"Volatile org-organic compounds," you answer swiftly, only for his finger to stop inside you. A whine leaves you, gripping his wrist, hoping it will make him move again. "Frankie, please! I-I got it right!"
"Yeah, but you need to know more than just what the acronym stands for. What are they and what do they do?" He asks, tilting his head to rest against your thigh with a smirk. Fucking dick.
"Carbon—shit—carbon-based molecules that vaporize at-at room temper-ah!-ture. They're found in paint and-and new furniture. They can cause long and sh-short-term health issues," you finish answering as quickly as possible and his movements start up again, this time with two fingers.
"Perfect, baby. One more. You gonna be good and answer one more question for me?" he mutters, placing a few kisses along his thighs. "I promise if you answer one more question, I'll let you cum, baby."
"Please, Frankie!" You moan out, his fingers nudging your spot over and over again. You can feel your release getting nearer, ready to snap, then his fingers stop again, pulling another whine out of you.
"So fucking good, baby. Just one more, you can do it," he teases, still placing small kisses on both your thighs. God, he looks so pretty like this; hair a mess from your tugging, your desire smeared across his lips that hang in smirk. You could cum just from looking at him alone. "What is the difference in soil formation in natural and urban areas?"
"Urban soils form as anthrosols, which are-are formed by—fuck!—human activity. Soils are you-younger in urban areas and d-don't form soil horizons," you answer, but he just shakes his head with that evil little smirk you've fallen in love with.
"C'mon, baby. There's more to it. You can do it," he grins mischievously as you shake your head at him.
"I don't know," you nearly cry out.
"Yes you do, baby. Use that pretty little brain of yours."
"Fuck! Um, urban soils have ar-artifacts and PAHs," you throw out, hoping that was all of it.
"Good girl," Frank mutters against you, moving his fingers and reattaching his mouth to your clit. You cry out, reaching the brink even quicker this time. He perfectly times his fingers hitting the perfect spot with another suck on your clit and sends you spiraling over the edge.
Your hands tug harshly on his hair, loud moans leaving you as he continues his movements to draw it out. You're seeing stars, thighs shaking around his head. When you finally come down, breath heavy and uneven, you push him away by the dark strands of hair between you fingers, only for him to return in seconds, cleaning you up with his tongue.
"So fucking perfect," he mutters against you, lapping you up.
"You're so mean, Frankie," you mutter out, feeling him chuckle. He sits back on his heels, starring up at you with the disgustingly hot smirk of his. He moves his fingers to his mouth, sucking them dry while making direct eye contact.
"I'm sorry, baby. How about I make it up to you by seeing how many times I can make you finish on my tongue before I give you the real thing?"

It had been an incredibly long night in the Pitt. They were handed a messy board to begin with. Too many people were simply boarding, waiting on a bed upstairs, which had been backed up by an influx in trauma patients that morning. Then there was a multi-car pile up that came in right at 10pm. It wasn't just the rough cases with two mortalities that had made the night so miserable.
It was the whispers.
They had been happening for a while. She was well aware that while she was as kind to everyone as humanly possible (inhumanly if anyone asked Dr. Abbot) she knew not everyone held a high opinion of her. She had a tendency to move too fast, according to some.
She talked too fast, moved too fast, said too much. She had heard that since she was a kid. She was always "a delight to have in class", but "was a little too social and disruptive sometimes". There was nothing she could blame it on. She wasn't diagnosed with ADHD—though if given the option, she would argue she should have been—she was just a lot.
She heard whispers from nurses, med students, even Dr. Robby, the day shift attending, which is why she moved to nights. They all seemed so much more relaxed, she thought it would be smooth sailing. For the most part, it was better than day shift.
She got along well with Parker, Shen, and Abbot. They saw her as their own personal energy drink, keeping their energy up with her own. Walsh found it cute, even flirting with her on occasion. She would turn firetruck red and Abbot would chastise the surgeon for flirting with and distracting his resident.
Then there were the others. The nurses on both shifts would whisper. She'd hear things from Santos about doing too much, same with the night shift R4, Owen Warren. While the quality of life improved in the darkness, she still heard the talk.
This time was different.
All day, she had been helping the new intern, who had only started a day before. The new girl, Dr. Lauren Banes, had been put with her for most of her first two shifts and it seemed the two were getting along. The intern had a dry sense of humor that made her giggle.
She had gone to the central nurses station, hoping to catch up on some charting as the 3 a.m. lull hit. Most of her patients were waiting on beds, the rest she couldn't treat until labs and CT came back. She sat at the farthest desk from the rest of the hospital, right by the trauma bays.
She had seen Warren and Banes talking, but thought nothing of it. She knew Warren's feelings towards her and found it best to avoid him for her mental health. Every time she spoke with him, she considered becoming a statistic, whether that was a suicide or murder statistic depending on what bullshit he was on that day.
"Seriously, you have to steal me from her." She heard the intern whisper—at least attempt to whisper—to him, their backs turned away from her. "She literally won't stop."
"I tried to warn you. The girl is just too much," he whispered back, her chest tightening.
"Like, fucks sake, do you ever shut up?" Banes giggled. "She might as well work in peds, because there's no way grown adults can put up with her."
She tried to tune them out, she really did, but she knew exactly who they were discussing. Banes had seemed so nice, practically stuck to her like glue for the last two shifts. Yet here she was, talking about the resident who helped her through a rough trauma her first day as if the older woman was the bane of her existence.
She didn't have much time to dwell on it, a gurney bursting through the ambulance bay doors with a man on top having a seizure. She pushed back her tears, rushing over to the EMTs to take over.
"Donald Merlyn, 43. Wife called after he woke her up seizing. He's Type 1 and has been seizing for 7 minutes," the EMT told her, Abbot, Warren, and Banes joining her.
"Good morning, honey," Abbot joked as he looked at her over the patient, rolling into Trauma 1. "What's the plan, sunshine?"
"We need to check blood glucose, likely a seizure from hypoglycemia," she answered quickly, though quieter than normal, worried about taking up too much space.
"Good. Banes, what do we do if blood sugar is low?" He asked, turning to the intern.
"100 mg thiamine then an amp of D50," she answered, Abbot nodding.
"And if it's too high?" He asked her and the intern froze, mouth open like she wanted to say something, but she couldn't find it.
"4 of Lorazepam followed by fluids, insulin, and electrolytes," she answered while the intern stood there, mouth still open.
"BG is 327," one of the nurses spoke, Abbot getting the lorazepam and injecting it. They monitored carefully, the seizure stopping within the minute.
"Alright, let's get the big three and move to central 6 for monitoring," Abbot ordered, the nurses prepping to move while the doctors move to chart or check on their other patients.
Abbot caught her arm on the way out, turning her to look at him. "You doin' okay, sunshine? Seems like your head fell outta the sky," he asked softly, hoping the others didn't notice.
"Yeah, fine," she lied, feigning confusion. She really didn't want to explain the whispers were getting to her. She wanted to be stronger than that.
"Okay. Tell me if that changes, yeah?" He didn't fully believe her, but he also wasn't going to push her if she wasn't ready to talk. She agreed, starting on Donald Merlyn's chart at the central nurses station where she could keep an eye on him.
About twenty minutes later, he began to move slightly. She shot up from her seat, moving quickly into central six with a tablet. "Hi Mr. Merlyn. You're at Pittsburg Trauma Medical Center where we've been treating you for a DKA induced seizure," she greeted him, the man grumbling something that she assumed was agreement. "Can you tell me your first and last name?"
She grabbed her penlight, shining it in his eyes briefly to check pupil reaction. She didn't get to put the penlight in her pocket before she was on the ground, Mr. Merlyn on top of her with his hands around her throat. Her head hit the tile hard, the tray beside his bed falling over as they went down.
She reached out, trying to push him away by his face, but it wasn't working. He was too much stronger then her. She tried to reach for something, anything she could use to alert a nurse or doctor or even the security guard in the room beside her that she couldn't breathe.
All she could do was stare at the wild look in his eyes, her vision fraying around the edges. Just as her vision fully darkened, the man was ripped off her, a large bang sounding through the small room as she gasped for breath, vision returning slowly.
She was more aware, scrambling to an upright position and pushing herself to the glass wall behind her. Jack Abbot was with the patient on the other wall, holding him there by his wrists. The security guard rushed in, followed by a few nurses.
As soon as the security guard had the man and the nurses worked on sedating him, Jack's attention turned to her as she stared ahead from her spot on the floor. "Hey, sunshine," he spoke to her, softly but quickly, moving himself onto his knees in front of her. He gently took her face in his hands, examining her with an urgency he doesn't even use with patients. "It's okay, I got you, sweetheart. You're okay."
She just stared back with wide eyes, coughing and gasping to regain her breath. She shook her head aggressively, watching as they moved Mr. Merlyn back to his bed. "Hey, hey, breath with me, okay? In, out. Good, let's do it again. In, out. You got it, sweetheart. Keep doing that. You're okay," he assured her softly. "Think you can stand so we can get you out of here?"
She nodded, still not trusting herself to speak. He stood, gently holding onto her arms to help her up. She stumbled into him, but he was ready, hands securing her by her biceps. "You're okay. I got you," Jack whispered to her, guiding her gently out of the room to the central nurses station. "Lena, what's open?"
"Central 10." He was guiding her into the room before her brain could catch up, easing her onto the edge of the gurney. He turned one of the lights off, leaving the second on so he could examine her.
"How're you feeling?" He asked.
"Like shit," she croaked out, Jack giving her a sympathetic smile.
"I'm gonna do my exam and then I'll get you some water for your throat, okay?" She nodded as he began the examination, shining his penlight in her eye and asking her to follow his finger. "Good news is I don't think you have a concussion. I'm going to order a CT to check the rest, but so far, so good. Now is the less fun part. I'm going to touch the back of your head to feel for bleeding or bumps and then I'm going to feel around your throat for damage, okay?"
"Yeah, okay." He pressed her head gently, starting from the front to the back. She winced as he reached the upper middle of her head.
"I know, sweetheart, I'm sorry. No blood, just a big 'ol goose egg," he assured her with the dorky smile that always made her heart flutter. "I'm gonna move on to your neck, okay?"
She nodded and his hands slid down to her jaw, turning her head slightly. She winced, soreness blooming through her neck, but nothing too bad. He moved his hands down, pressing along her neck gently. Tears pricked her eyes, Jack finishing as quickly as possible. "I know, baby. I'm so sorry. I just need to listen and then I'm done, okay?"
She nodded and he grabbed his stethoscope, pressing it gently against her throat. "Breathe in for me. And out." He switched sides. "Again. In and out. Sounds good. I still want you to get a CT to make sure there's no skull fracture, but everything sounds good. Your throat will probably be sore, but it should be okay."
"Thank you, Jack," she whispered, throat still sore.
"Of course. Let me get your water bottle. At central like normal?" She paused, not prepared for him to be aware of where she set her water every night. She nodded slowly, a small blush reaching her cheeks. "I'll be right back."
Once the door clicked shut behind him, the tears she had been holding in all day washed down her face faster than a white water stream. She tried to keep her sobs in, not wanting the added pain to her throat, but a few slipped out, which only made her cry harder.
She didn't even hear the door open and by the time she recognized she wasn't alone, Jack was already seated beside her, pulling her head into his chest. One hand wrapped around her, the other gently pressing her head into him. "You're okay, you're okay," he muttered, gently stroking her hair.
If she was less distressed, she might have thought about the fact that her attending was holding her and comforting her, which had to be some from of HR issues, but she felt so safe in his arms. Safe from the man who hurt her, safe to feel the fear, but also safe to talk about what had been bothering her all day.
"I don't think I'm built for this, Jack," she sobbed out, ignoring the throbbing in her throat. "I'm not meant for emergency medicine. I should just move upstairs to psych or peds."
"Where did you ever get that idea?" He asked her, pulling back slightly so he could look at her.
"Everyone here knows it but me. I told myself I could do this, that I could slow down, talk less, make it through. I do that and end up a fucking patient. I can't do this anymore," she wheezed out, tears flooding onto his scrub top.
"Hey, look at me," he muttered softly, gently guiding her chin so she had to meet his eyes. "You are an amazing doctor. You are fast, efficient, and so fucking smart. You're easily the best resident I've ever had. You see it as talking too much, but you're connecting with your coworkers, with your patients.
"I don't call you sunshine just because you're always smiling, but because you are the closest thing we get to the sun this time of night. Everyone else is used to doctors being good with the medicine or good with the people, but you shine in every possible way and they don't know what to do with it. And you bring in those cupcakes that taste as pretty as they look, so if you quit, I will quit."
She laughed at that, tears slowing but stile sprinkling across her cheeks as she shook her head. "I could still bring cupcakes down if I changed to work upstairs," she assured him, but he was buying it.
"It wouldn't be the same," he argued with a shake of his head and downturned lips. She giggled lightly, Jack placing a kiss on her forehead.
"I don't want you to leave," he muttered against her scalp, pulling back again. "I think you're amazing, with the medicine, the patients, the staff. You are one of the smartest people to ever work in this ER. I've seen you suggest things that make Robby look stupid. Don't leave because other people are jealous about how much better than them you are. Stay here. Stay with me."
She stared into his hazel eyes that were filled with sincerity, admiration, and even a bit of fear. She didn't realize how long it had been until he spoke again. "You know, I kinda just ripped out my heart and put it in your hands, so if you could give me any inclination on if you plan to squish it or put it back-"
She didn't let him finish, hands shooting up to cup his cheeks and pull his mouth to hers. He answered eagerly, both moving in tandem as they relished in the feeling they'd been wanting since her intern year. His hand slid down to her thigh, grabbing her leg to pull her gently into his lap. His arm slid back up, pulling her closer by the shoulders with the added space and comfortability of their new position.
She winced into his mouth as his arm tightened, Jack pulling back instantly. "Did you hit your shoulder?"
"He slammed me into the floor. I hit everything," she answered though she could no longer deny the pain in her shoulder.
"You know, you really should be forthcoming with your doctor. I can't help if I don't know," he tells her, face straight.
"I'll keep that in mind for my next checkup," she promised with a giggle. The door swung open, both freezing, meeting each others gazes with wide eyes.
"Hey, I just heard. Are you-" Ellis stopped when her brain finally processed the scene before her, jaw dropping and eyes wide. "Dammit, Lena just won so much money."
"You bet on me?" she practically shouted, but due to her still-sore vocal cords, her voice cracked like a kid going through puberty.
"Honey, we've had a bet for like the whole time you've been here."
"Well, go give the charge nurse her cash and leave us alone," Jack ordered, glaring at the woman at the door.
"Hey, my bad," she shrugged, hands raising in surrender. "You guys want me to close the curtains so no one comes in while you fuck or just let the whole hospital watch?"
"I was thinking we could do it on the nurses station. Put all the rumors and bets to rest."
