It was late after the sun fell behind the jade green mountains in the distance, Emperor Mu’s banquet had just began to come to its full livelihood. His favored Consort Graceful had given birth to a pair of Princes’ Mu Han and Mu Jian and his majesty was thrilled.
With all the singing and dancing and merriment happening in the hall a slender figure was able to slip through the pillars and escape the echoing halls. Her grace, Pan Tsuhwa walked towards the glittering lake in the middle of the courtyard. It was known that Tsuhwa was disfavored by his majesty for her strong will and sharp tongue, yet favored by many concubines and her majesty the Empress. She sighed with a note of envy, she never imagined she’d be so far from home to not even be favored by her future husband and future father to her children. On this arctic chill night in mid Autumn the lights from the lanterns seemed to dull around her. She did not feel happy with her life, with no where to go, no money, no honor, she knew she only had one option left. She lifted her arms to untie her hair from their buns, letting the shimmering green shells her maid had pinned fall to the path with a jingle. Her sea-foam eyes cried out with loneliness as she stepped out of her silk slippers and approached the lakes edge. Her chocolate hair fluttered with the nights cold air , the scent of berries and lilac filled the surroundings. She would no longer feel pain after this, no longer be alone, She’d be with her ancestors and her family, with a sharp inhale she took a step and walked off the edge.
“WAIT!” A man cried in the distance but it was already too late, she had plunged into the icy cold waters of the lotus pond.
She felt the air leave her lung as she sunk to the bottom. The impact had taken her last breath and she would lay there for the rest of her life. She saw the golden clouds of his majesties heaven in the fair distance of the pond as she felt the life and consciousness leave her. A tug, a pull was all she felt before blackness engulfed her. She felt a hard sharp pain in her chest as she awoke in what seemed to be her room. Had it all been a dream? Had she been alone this whole night?
“My lady, you have a visitor.” She heard her maids soft whispery voice say from behind the paper doors
“S-Send then in Mei.” She croaked and coughed in pain.
“Your grace, are you alright?” The curtains surrounding her bed were pulled aside and a man appeared in its place. His piercing blue eyes seemed to be filled with concern, his blue robes all familiar to her calm mind. Lord Yi, his majesties brother had been the one to yell in her dream.
“I tried to come sooner, but Lady Mei said you were still at rest. Are you in pain? I tried to pull you out as gently as I could but you were so cold I couldn’t tell you from the water.” He looked down at her.
“My lady why did you walk into the water?”
“I-I was drunk...I was...I was lonely.” She felt warm tears slip down her cheeks and she felt the weight of a thousand stones rest in her chest.
“Please don’t tell your majesty, please he already disfavors me greatly” she cried and pleaded with the man before her.
“shh shh.” He wiped the tears from her eyes with a silk cloth and brought her hand to his lips before placing a soft kiss on her fingers.
“My brother maybe be ruler, but I will not let him harm such a delicate flower. Your secret is mine. And I will do all I can to keep you from all harm.”
“My lord, your Eunuch is looking for you.”
Her maid appeared from the door way.
“Ah thank you Mei” He looked at the gentle flower once more and lowered her hand.
“I’ll visit you after the sun sets, please rest my lady.” His eyes looked into her own and he raised a smile and turned to leave, he thanked Lady Mei and with that he left.
Lady Pan felt her cheeks warm as she looked after him. Maybe it was not so bad here.
A/N : Geez, I wrote this for a friend on Royal Chaos back when we were obsessed with it. I'm still proud of it. ♡
