Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) is located in Spindale, North Carolina. The church/cult has been in operation since the 1980s and was founded by Pastors Sam and Jane Whaley. Every aspect of members’ lives is heavily monitored and regulated by the church - from what they wear, what car they buy, to their sex life, and what career they are allowed to pursue. Most members live communally, with multiple families in a single home so that they can monitor one another.
WOFF has a unique style of worship that includes speaking in tongues and very loud music. They engage in what they call “blasting prayer.” It is a lengthy, high pitched scream, which aids in “deliverance.” WOFF’s version of deliverance is more like an exorcism than what most evangelical churches consider “deliverance.” WOFF believes that through deliverance, they can cast out “devils” from people. It involves multiple people surrounding the afflicted person, and blasting and beating the “devils” out of the person until they are freed from the spirits.
The church has faced numerous abuse and kidnapping allegations throughout the years. Several members were recently convicted of fraud. The group has affiliations in Ghana and Brazil.
